Just saw the film. Loved it! One of my favorite scenes was the scene about "Project Elrond". The whole crew talking about Lord of the Rings with Boromir (Sean Bean) sitting right there. Funny scene :).

+SG1Shova Yeah, but even if thats wasn't the case you can still have an Indian name from generations back depending on who's passed the name down, my families generation is only ⅛ chinese and many of us still have a chinese surname, whilst some of us having blond/red hair, blue eyes etc.

+lucy rebecca Yeah, its not strange at all. Most western Black people have adopted surnames for one reason or another. There could be many reasons why he had that surname. His father could have been Black and knocked up an Indian woman and they didnt get married, so she gave her child her surname. If you watch sports its not uncommon to see Black players with Asian and Latin surnames.

I read the book and just saw the movie. The name change makes complete sense to me now, I didn't know why they had done that, so thank you for that. For the most, I thought they did a great job with the movie. They had to take out a lot from the book but it makes sense due to time constraints and they changed a couple of things I wish they wouldn't have but it didn't bother me too much. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend you read the book. Thanks for the review guys!

Great review! I have only read the book, and I agree with Mark. The character is so likeable that you just want to spend all the time listening to him, how he encounters problems and attempts to fix it, after a slur of colorful language of course. I have heard that they left out the bit in the book in which his rover runs over soft sand on the way down the Schiaparelli crater and rolls over like a tumble weed. I just love how everyone at NASA is just shitting bricks over it when Watney was like "well things didn't go at plan" ,and went on joking about it with this "oh it's just Wednesday for me". I sure hope that they kept the bit with the hydrazine though!

I loved it! And it made me feel really bad! I think his aloneness on Mars brought me back to a deployment when I was incredibly sad and lonely. I think it was the most realistic (for me anyways) emotional portrayal I've seen. Constantly joking through the movie, to the part when he realizes it's pretty much over, and breaks down. Amazed! I can't watch it again, but I did love it!

On the subject of the main character's emaciation at the end, I heard Matt Damon say on a recent chat show that he was willing to lose the weight, but the way they were filming it (and with other obligations he had before and after) he simply couldn't lose the weight (to regain muscle/health) in time. So that was a body-double from Eastern Europe with Damon's head added digitally.

Perfect timing. Just got back from seeing this and I feel like I'm an astronaut back from space. I've always been excited to see what Ridley Scott does next. Now more than ever. Did anyone else get an 'Alien' feel from some of the scenes? I remember three or so, the most notable one being their helmets and the lights on them in the dark. There's just something special about the way a space ship and a space station looks and feels in a Ridley Scott production.

Drew Goddard's screenplay keeps a lot of the heart and wit and science from Andy Weir's novel, but a little too much of it got cut for me to call it perfect (especially the science!). There was also a noticeable chunk of time where we cut back to Watney on Mars and I thought "wow, we haven't seen you in a while." But Scott comes to Goddard's rescue with a couple of glorious scenes that didn't make it into the book - namely when an emaciated Watney covered in scabs emerges from the shower, a stark contrast to the bulky guy we saw strip down at the start. I also found a tacked on ending to be a bit schmaltzy, especially the resolution of Mara and Sebastian Stan's 4-second romance. That would've been the first thing on the chopping board if I'd adapted the book.

Read the book and then saw the movie (3D). LOVED both. Wish that the movie had more of the details that were in the book, but that would have stretched this movie to LOTR series size. There is a major character change in the last action scene of the film which differs from the book, but still made for a good story. There is also the addition of a scene at the end of the movie not in the book which I did not mind as it fit the movie's tone. Sorry to be so vague, trying to avoid spoilers.

My top ten list is always changing, but it always includes empire strikes back, Raiders, jaws, apocalypse now, pulp fiction and now the Martian, there are a few others that I like as much as the Martian but for me this is the best film I've seen in at least 10 years, honestly I saw pulp fiction about 10 years ago when I was 16 or so and not since that movie has something moved me enough to add it to the films above. This film is what Matt Damon will be remembered for much like all of Tom hanks movies or Lawrence of Arabia for Peter o'toole and I think this will be remembered as one of Ridley Scott's masterpieces. It was an unforgettable experience seeing it opening night and will drag people to the theatre tonight and tomorrow and Sunday.

Dude, African Americans have last names from every ethnicity on the planet. My background is African, Welsh, Scottish and Indian. My last name is Welsh. Some names were slave given. Post slavery, sometimes chosen. I went to high school with a black girl whose last name was Wong. Her family chose that name over a hundred years ago because it was the name of the first family to hire and pay them after being granted freedom.

I loved this movie -- I give it a 10 out of 10. I also loved the novel it was based on, and feel this is about as good an adaptation of the novel as I could have dreamed of. By necessity, of course, they had to cut some parts from the story. But it still captures all of the spirit and emotion of the novel. I think it's the best science fiction movie I've seen in a VERY long time. As far as Donald Glover is concerned, he's playing a nerd, not a stoner. And as a fellow nerd, and someone who's familiar with a wide range of nerd behaviors (because no two nerds are exactly alike), I think the fact that he didn't know who Jeff Daniels was is basically an acknowledgement of the aloofness of many nerds, the ability to become totally absorbed by an intellectual problem, while being oblivious to everything else. I know from experience, it's what made me good at my job, while at the same time, sometimes looking 'dumb' to outsiders. I was a systems analyst, and I've had experiences where I'd be staring at a computer screen, so entirely in my own head, that I was oblivious to two people coming into my cubicle to have a conversation (supposedly with me participating), yet I had no idea that that was even happening until I heard my name. I was great with computer code and logic and running projects. But I was terrible with so much else. So to me, Donald Glover was quite recognizable and believable, much more so than almost any other depiction I've ever seen. in TV and movies. You probably didn't recognize that because nerds are almost NEVER depicted realistically.

In any other year, this would be the early Favorite for Best Picture and Best Actor. This would also win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation-Long Form in any other year. This will probably win neither with films like Sicario in mainstream cinema and Star Wars: Force Awakens in Science Fiction cinema. It was a great film and will last a long time as a great film.

"Rich Purnell is a Steely Eyed Bastard" There was enough in the book for two movies and a coming home sequel but the end killed that option. The viral videos they put on youtube filled in Mark Whatney;s backstory. FYI, the book is awesome and very detailed. The movie dumbed down quite a bit of the story.

9/10 is my rating for 'The Martian'. I really enjoyed this film. It's another well crafted, well balanced film. Definitely Top 10 of 2015 worthy, maybe even Top 5. In the book, Kapoor is an Indian. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a half black/ half Indian character. He explains it in 10 seconds. No big whoop. Overall, I think the film could've been rated R to match the book's smartass humor even more IMO. The stakes didn't feel as high cinematic-ally as they did dramatically in the novel - but I get it - they were pressed for running time. I look forward to the Blu Ray.

I really liked the Martian. Was exciting and funny. I did think it felt a little long. At a certain point you knew that they were going to attempt a rescue so all the problem solving on Earth got kinda boring. They weren't going to just come across a problem and not solve it and the movie ends with him dying. That was the only criticism I had. All the acting was great. I'd say 4.4/5.

This movie is a solid 8/10. Its pacing isn't solid, there are too many actors, nothing really sets itself up well. But the acting, even just by Matt Damon alone is worth seeing. To those that were raving about Interstellar last year: This is how you do a space movie with the message that we should love. It´s funny, the two movies have so many similarities, from parts of the cast to the message, to the fact they are both set in space. One has famously no green screen, but could you tel? If you love Interstellar, good for you. But please see this movie!

+Herman Falck How Just because Cooper was caught up in the moment and thought it was about love, doesn't mean it really was powered by love, he 'time travelled' using the five dimension environment he was in. Also just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean it doesn't actually make sense.

I listened to a NASA Mars expert talk about the film, and the only thing that wasn't scientifically accurate, was the initial dust storm. Storms aren't that powerful on Mars, but everything else he did was plausible.

The shots where they showed he was skinny was a body double and not skinny Matt Damon or CGI. I think that is the only nitpicking I will make that I didn't like because it was weird cut shots from one person's naked skinny body to Matt Damon's body in the suit which did not match at all. Matt Damon's face didn't look skinny at all and body and behaviour still looked normal in the suit as well. But overall loved the film.

Yeah I'm in the same boat...I liked it, but I can't gush over it like a lot of others have. And good for them that they enjoyed it that immensely, I just wasn't "over the moon" in love with it. 7/10 too, and I hope it wins a bunch of oscars because I did love the cast and it was a fun flick.

I have yet to see the movie but read the book and absolutely loved it! From everything that was said it looks like it is exactly like the book which I am very happy about! I have a question though to those who saw the movie.. is there a scene where mark watney has to repair something while listening to the song staying alive? Because that happens in the book and that would be pure comic genius if they made that scene the right way in the movie!

+Tonypepperoni99 He doesn't do that - but you get loads of disco hits as he does his tasks; so they DEFINITELY kept the 70s disco thing going in the movie (ironically, he hates Lewis's record collection - but it's the only music available). Over the end credits, "I Will Survive" is played.

Just saw the movie. People were saying this movie was better than Cast Away and stuff. Couldn't disagree more. The movie was alright at best. So damn predictable. The film looked absolutely awesome though.

With me, I really liked the movie, but I thought they totally underused the Kristen Wiig and the Donald Glover characters. In the book, the Kristen Wiig character is a much funnier character, which is why I thought the casting was perfect, but they must have cut a lot of her scenes. And I must disagree with Kristian's criticism about spending too much time on Mars. I would have loved more scenes like that, as those were the most compelling scenes in the film in my opinion.

I enjoyed this movie, just saw it last night!! 9/10!! This is my Ridley Scott go-to #1 movie (surpassing The Gladiator). ANYONE tell if I'm wrong, BUT this movie had a bit of an (**SPOILER ALERT**) ex-machina with the whole Chinese NASA secretly/miraculously having a probe I believe for them to orbit with!!? Still a great movie, I understand that it came from the novel but still: REALLY?? CNASA had a secret PROBE!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if theres a directors cut attached to the blu ray. ridley scott always has director cut versions. So i'm sure Ellis will get what he wants lol. The best directors cut imo was Kingdom of Heaven. The theatrical release wasnt great...but holy shit watch the directors cut and it's amazing. it's an hour longer has an intermission and explains a shit ton. So the martian will prob have an added 20 or 30 mins. Def going to see the martian again.

I really never give movies 10/10 so I'm going to give this a 7/10 just for a overall good story and character driven movie. I would of liked a little more back round on Matt Damon's character and I too felt this movie was a tad long.
