One way to fix allow for an easier difficulty setting would be to allow for perma-upgrades, much like other Roguelikes, such as Hades or Crypt of the Necrodancer. I'd suggest letting special inventory items such as the quiver or bomb bag be obtainable only in special large chests at select levels (such as lvl.5, 9, and 12), as well as the sword, shield and armor upgrades. Heart pieces should also be perma-upgrades but only +1 heart piece retained per attempt at Agahnim. This would allow for multiple progressive playthroughs grinding for victory without getting overly tedious.

Glad it's not just me that's frustrated with this fight. Even at literal MAX health I couldn't win. I’ve never seen anyone even get 1 less than full heart wow. For someone new just trying to get further, other items are better, but if you think you can make it to Agh, you have to get every heart possible. And… spoiler if you care… the number of hits Agh takes is 6

@@yozarian86 Thank you! I very much care about that info, gives me some semblance of an end goal now that I can shoot for. So far the only items that matter in the long run that I've noticed is the curse immunity pendent and the 20% more cash pendent. That same run where I had max health I also had every possible pendent so I got to see some neat synergies especially with the 25% reduced magic cost, because it also reduces how much magic is needed to charge wands so wand of wealth goes a long way. In villages ring of wealth also comes in clutch with the magic reduction pendent because you can easily get a net positive and then just go to the magic shop and refill for less than what you made off of ring. The only differences I've noticed between boomerang and hookshot is: 1) you can move after using instead of having to stand still (which can be useful), 2) it can hit things on the way back, 3) you can use your movement to control it's positioning when it's returning to you, 4) it costs a little bit more on average. Other than that they seem to function exactly the same in this game. Only the last one is a downside.

Wow that Aghanim fight. I feel like the designer missed the point of roguelikes; all the stuff before the end is for preparing FOR the end, and the joy is in doing the fight/whatever with whatever you've managed to accumulate. @rjbourgeois54903 ай бұрын
@@jeffgoggin1394 A good thing is going to get critiqued. It's a good thing when people tend to hate on one aspect of something. It shows how they actually cared about what they played. Critique is not always bad, even when presented passionately. It's easy to see the amount of hard work invested into the project, it shows, and it may be free to play in terms of money, but time sunk into the playing of your title is another investment the player makes. You don't want them to feel like that time was all for nought. It's a roguelike, it's suppose to be difficult. But no roguelike's game design ever blindsides the player to where they would never get a chance to prepare for what's to come even on the first playthrough. The genre is inherently tough but it's also fair. The designer did a phenominal job on everything except that one fight which just so happens to be it's climax (among one other personal critique I have for it), and that's the issue. It's the final fight where all the progress and time invested just feels... wasted... The main issue is that all the way up until that point, inventory management is paramount to the entire playthrough of the title. A player's build is developed for a good 2-3 hours to maybe make it to the end, just to have their whole setup wiped without any warning. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game otherwise and the dev deserves all the praise. But that fight ruins any replayability it would otherwise have. If he doesn't want to change it, it's his project, but at the same time, you can't expect someone not to give their honest opinion about something you put out into this realm. Never take criticism of your work to heart. There's a reason people are annoyed, so look into why that is. It will only better you as a game developer if your goal is to publish your work and have it enjoyed by others.
@naejimba3 ай бұрын
@@jeffgoggin1394 , roguelikes are built around replayability where each run is unique... it focuses on strategic decision-making as well as managing risks and resources. The final fight is more like a game built around mastery and execution (a fighting game is a good example). Games about mastery have you do the same thing over and over so you can improve. If something is difficult enough that it not only requires mastery, but places emphasis on it, then humans have to do it over and over to learn. This is how we learn everything that is difficult via repetition and it would be expected that someone fails a great deal in the process. Having to put 2-4 hours in between each attempt leaves little room for improvement and is frustrating on the mastery side, and on the roguelike side and having all of your strategic decision making and resource management made irrelevant feels bad too. It's less about what has come before and understanding WHY certain people like and play certain genres of games. You want to mix the two together? Could be something fun and unique... but you have to play to the strengths of both. The last fight brings out the worst in both. In fact, most items don't do much of anything on ANY oft he boss fights, besides cheesing the first fight with bombs (which are a part of EVERY run) and the bow and arrow. A better approach would be allowing each item to have some interesting interaction with every boss and can change how you go about fighting them; that way you are adding depth and adding to replayability.

But the last boss is not about how many powerful items you have, but how skillful of a player you are. By taking your items, Agahnim is basically saying, "We're going to fight on my terms, not yours!" Note how poetic it is to actually defeat him using his own weapon after he's taken yours. ....but this isn't Darksouls or a fighting game, where the point is about execution and mastery, this is a roguelike where the whole appeal is running different loadouts each time to keep things fresh (with a focus on strategic decision-making and managing risks and resources). Typically genres that lean on the former allow a person to try something over and over to improve, while a roguelike is a one death and game over affair built on replayability. You see how the two don't mesh well? ESPECIALLY when you consider most roguelikes are shorter to account for this, but this game is a 2-4 hour run. If you don't realize why this fight would piss someone off you are ignoring human psychology as well as why people play different genres. The last fight comes with the sacrifice of strategic decision making, managing risks and resources, and replayability... the whole appeal of the genre. It is an objectively bad decision.
