Rugby World Cup Champions in 2019 and 2023, South Africa didn't win with playing talent alone. They were led by arguably the most impressive coaching duo in rugby history: Jacques Nienaber and Rassie Erasmus.
Loved by many, and disliked by even more, you just have to respect the way they go about their business. Bending the rules and using the laws of rugby to their advantage.
These two share a very deep rugby journey together.
Hope you enjoy this video. All use of footage is completely transformed to suit alignment with the research essay / analysis and adheres to fair use. If any issues please make contact with me.
As always thanks for watching! & please share with your rugby mates!

Not to get nit picky here, but Rassie did not upload the video. The team video analyst (blanking on his name) uploaded it to Vimeo. The link was only sent to the referees involved in the game and the referee manager. It wasn't password protected because it would have been just as easy to share the password with the link to the video, so they didn't bother. Someone that received the link then forwarded it to others, and that's where it became public. While I don't necessarily fully agree with Rassie's approach, I understand why he made the video, but just want to make it clear that at least based on his accounts it was never intended to be made public.

This makes perfect sense. I always suspected the punishment meted out to RE was more to protect the image of the referees. A high powered NFL lawyer was ready to take World Rugby to court apparently, but sanity prevailed in the end. Instead, RE turned this to the Springboks' advantage. Referees were now aware Rasnaber were dissecting their every blow on the whistle. What is further ironic is how other world coaches have gotten away with criticizing decisions and referee performances. Us Saffers have learned the hard, and tragic, way with COVID, when we were denied early access to vaccines, and the completely hysterical anti-SA travel bans (after our scientists identified Omicron and reported this finding to the international community), that the Anglo-Saxon world would prefer it that we "know our place," and grants us nothing without demanding subservience in return. This is one of the reasons why South Africans are so happy with this triumph. It almost feels like a victory over injustice. How Rassie was treated was unjust. How many journos seemed to be searching for dirt on the Springboks is unfair. Only decisions for the Springboks were widely publicised on social media. None of the even obvious ones that were unfair against the Springbok were scrutinised to any extent. Our local expert analyst shows highlighted these. So, well done Bokke, halala Rasnaber!

Actual digital tracing of the video going viral points to the starting point being Australia too which was just ignored during hearing by WR too, they just tunnel vision focused on the whole not password protected angle, they didnt care about actually figuring out who leaked it, which is telling itself.

They took a team that lost 57-0 to NZ. Lost to Italy. Thrashed 38-3 by Ireland. Ranked 7th in the world. They took that team, and won back to back world cups, and in between, were competitive consistently. They are the best coaches in the history of the game. Two heads are better than one, and this is always why they have had the edge. Individually, we will see in the coming years. But together, goats.

Correct on the depth. Just that its our school rugby system that does that. Having said that, it still takes the right coach to pull it together. Jake White did it. Rassnaber did it. The fact of the matter is that coaching at bok level is more about fine tuning strategy but also massively about selection, both from the talent pool but also for your given strategy.

If you look at pre- Rassie/Jaques, the South African team were good but not great. The dynamic duo sat down and worked out how to turn them into winners. For me, a key factor was discipline. Have a look at the record in this tournament where the boks were superbly disciplined. The stats will tell you that. The second factor was the technical detail of how they had a game plan designed for the particular opponents in every match, and a back-up plan in case things changed.. Ask anyone in the camp and I'm sure each and every one will say they knew their role and what was expected of them, Players will have been disappointed that they didn't always play or if they got subbed, but they knew the internal rules within the team. When that final whistle blew, everyone celebrated because the all knew that it was a win for them all. RSA could do a lot worse than getting them in to run the whole country. Great leaders!

You're absolutely right. Each player had a detail - another military term that gives a good sense of how they view the game - tactical, strategic, and based on years of preparation. That approach plus the Boks' iron will is why they won two back to back World Cups. Several sides have played better running rugby during that time. No can match the Boks mettle.

Thank you for this video. I always wanted to learn more about these two masterminds and two great coaches. Thats funny that Rassie became a 'waterboy coach'. That is so clever. I hate world rugby for making up stupid rules to cover what was a perfect and clever move by Rassie and his waterboy tactic. NFL coaches stand on the side of the field and Football (soccer) managers, Basketball the same, and there are many sports like that. I love these two masterminds' innovations. But I think our new All Blacks mastermind -Razor-will match Rassie hehe so watch out hehe Again, well to done to the two great coaches for a wonderful story of inspiration, and for winning their 4 title.

Impressive to hear about the relationship between Rassie and Jacques. Their dominance in rugby has many parallels to the British Cycling dominance under Dave Brailsford of the late 2000s and early 2010s. The way Brailsford began to analyse and use marginal gains to his advantage completely changed the sport of cycling - every team was forced to catch up, even the governing body itself. Forward dominance of the Springboks, use of the bomb squad and specific game plan for each match - Rassie has done the work and has been thinking outside the box. All the other teams now have a lot of catching up to do, but sadly, I fear World Rugby will look to limit the Springboks strategic advantage. Congratulations SA. Winning 2 back to back RWCs was not done by chance. Being an England supporter, I hope we will get to see Rassie in England colours!

Nice video, thanks. What these guys have done is nothing short of amazing. The state of Bok rugby in 2017 was a disaster and I think a lot of fans fully expected it to enter a terminal decline (much like the country as a whole). To turn it around in 2 years was their real magic, maintaining a competitive team through COVID disruptions and into this cycle just cements it. They: 1. Built the core skills of the team back up to parity with the best teams in the world and then layered tactics and strategy onto a forward dominated platform to win in 2019. 2. Built a squad with depth that every other country can envy. We won this cup (and final) without our first & second choice hookers, first choice lock, first choice 13. 3. Built a squad level culture that emphasises the shared rather than individual outcome. Can't stress how important this is. SA is a bit more individualistic a culture, like the US, when it comes to success. Def more so than Aussie & NZ with their Tall Poppy stuff. But there's no way we would have won without the team culture they built. 4. Started adding running to the forward dominated approach in layers while always having flexibility to adapt (see Semi final). There's no way the 2019 team wins the QF against this French team for example IMO. 5. Added some raw intelligence and cunning to the physical assets SA rugby players have in spades. Thanks Rassie and Jacques. I hope you never have to buy a drink yourself for the rest of your lives in any bar or pub where there is a Bok fan present.

The greatest legacy these 2 leave is that they erased all doubt who the right players are, and the stain politics left on SA rugby with the "quota" system. Long gone are the days where people argue about which players should or shouldn't be there. So happy for all the players in that squad and every single one played their part and deserved lifting the trophy. For me personally, especially Bongi, i remember watching him playing in a losing bulls side, playing his heart out till the last second. What a beast in that springbok jersey

Or we can save ourselves a lot of effort and frustration … just have the rugby officiandos award the next RWC title to the team that they themselves fancy. Perhaps then the sad losers will be as dissatisfied as they are currently are - but there will be no threats of violence, requests for the final to be replayed (under special conditions), the champions strategy and execution will also not be criticised … The benefits of awarding the RWC trophy without anybody leaving home nor kitting up, really has so many advantages. 🤔

There's already a game that's pretty much like this. If you want to watch that, you have the NRL available any time. It's a bit samey and you don't get to watch something as awesome as the rugby world cup as hardly anyone around the world likes league as much as the Australians. That seems to be a better approach than denying the far, far larger number of us that like rugby as it is.

Mauls, scrums and lienouts were terrible this entire world cup, Boks didn't have Malcom Marx and Kitsoff was dreadful, we had no scrum dominance. Yet we still won. I wish these journalist would just shut up, Boks can run you to death, scrums you to death and everything in between. They are a complete team that can play the game of century vs France and a week later go to old school tactics vs England. That's what Rassie and Nienaber have built
