I think it's really awesome how you just figure stuff out as you go along. I like that you start projects sometimes without even knowing what you want as the end product. Way cool.

Nick, the wood was "green" or not dry. The pressure pot forced the moisture that was in the wood out into the resin.

I thought maybe it had something to do with the drill holes and match sticks not being glued in. Figuring the square matchsticks dry fitted into the round holes would leave a surprisingly large of air that would come out under pressure or in a vacuum. But I'm no expert by any means so I could be completely off base, lol.

I've seen a few of your videos on FB, but shortened. Finally came to KZbin to see them as intended. Fascinating!! You're so weird! I love it! HA! As soon as this was held up with the matchsticks in the wood, before the resin, I knew it would look amazing hollowed out with a light inside. Almost like a firework captured in resin.

Nice job mate, I think the cracking would most likely have occurred on depressurisation and is caused by the rapid expansion of air pockets within the wood in the middle of the piece. I have made a night light with those little woodart lights, very different to yours, video soon. Cheers, Jim
@Sludgepump
@Sludgepump 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting! So, there might be pieces out there with high pressure bubbles and compartments that are just a gentle bump away from fracturing. Jim, do you think a short spell in a vacuum chamber would take care of that before hitting the pressure pot?

Sludgepump It is possible that there are pieces with pressure pockets enclosed within. More likely that temperature change would cause problems with them. The resin Nick uses is too viscous for vacuuming to make any difference. The wood would need stabilising in a vacuum chamber with cactus juice resin or similar first. Jim
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 6 жыл бұрын

I know this video is kind of old, but I think the resin got too hot while it was curing (you tried to cast too thick a cross-section) and cracked. Knowing that, maybe you could do it again on purpose and fill in the cracks with a different colour of resin.

Nick. Robert, aka "Tamma" from North Carolina, USA. I watched this and remembered some time back when I tripped and dropped an resin bowl a good friend turned for me. It broke a big chunk out and had several large cracks like your piece. My friend laughed and said Super Glue. He said to get the thin glue and using "capillary" action it will seal and repair invisibly. He was right. I knew where to look or else no one would know. Maybe in future projects this may work for you. In the mean time, keep up the great work.

Hello Nick, once again thanks for this vid and this original work! Up to me the cracks are due to the back pressure from captive air in the wood. To avoid this you could do it in two steps: first let the wood in vacuum chambers for a couple of hours to suck out all the air, then second: quickly poor the resin, then put it in vacuum chamber again :) It should fix the problem. By the way.... these cracks gives a beautifull visual effect ! I love it :)

Hi Nick ! Greetings from Brazil. I love your work. I believe the reason for that 'glass effect' is due to the air pressure between the matchstick hole and the resin under pressure: the air is trying to come out (pushing the matchstick out) and the resin is building a thick barrier to let it be released while in the pressure pot. A little bit of engineering here.... Hope it helps ! Bye Eliana Gotilla
