The complete lack of tension was what got me. The shoehorned story to justify why Neo is back in The Matrix is bad, but I can push past that. But I never once understood the stakes, nobody was ever in any real danger. The original had a sense that humanity scraped and hid to survive in the depths, and that the Machines were dangerous and all-powerful. There was none of that in this film. Shit, when Team Expendable stepped forward to answer Bad Makeup Pinkett Smith's call to action I laughed to a colleague at the press screening "Oh, here are the non-namers to die in the big battle." Nope. Does anyone die in this movie that isn't a faceless extra fighting our plucky heroes? I'm not saying you have to slaughter the cast for drama or tension, but I've never seen so many fights without even the slightest sense of a rising danger for the protagonists. And when Discount Peter Pan shows up with The Lost Boys, who the fuck were they? Was this a callback from 2 or 3 I just forgot? The bad cover of "Wake Up" at the end encapsulates this movie perfectly. I already know all the words, it's kinda like something great from the 1990s, but in the end, why does this exist and why wouldn't I just stick with the original? At least they didn't shit on Neo like the Star Wars sequels did to Luke Skywalker. If this movie felt like a bad fan fiction sequel/reboot to The Matrix, at least it was fiction written by people who were fans of the original movies.

One of the biggest kicks in the teeth for me, was the fact that Smith kept calling Neo “Tom” instead of Mr Anderson. The reason for this…Calling Neo “Mr” implies a male gender. In a movie that is rolling gender neutrality and non-binary bs up into a little ball and shoving it down your throat. This movie should have been called Matrix: Woken Up

What kills me is that there’s some things I really like conceptually, particularly the bits with the machine civil war, yet it gets botched or glossed over so badly. I would have greatly preferred dealing more with the machine conflict than this weird flashback stuff that kept popping up. Also, one part that bugged me, when the new “Smith” playing Anderson’s boss is monologuing at the window like OG Smith…how did Neo recall this? The only person that listened to this speech was the original Morpheus when he was captured by the agents.

I think the movie is "good," just needs a little more polish when it came to story. However, it doesn't get away with criticism. For me, the story was confusing especially the first 30 minutes. I feel like the way they explained the story in the wrong way: They spent the first hour of the film trying reconcile Anderson's (Neo's) reality. I say touch on this for 30 minutes, and keep the story going. I don't mind the battle between today's "Smith," and today's "Neo." And, the battle between "The Analyst," and "Neo" was interesting. Almost intense. I feel like they're setting up "The Analyst" and "Neo" for the next Matrix film. Since Neo doesn’t have his powers at 100% NOW. Trinity has Neo's powers from Matrix Revolutions, despite dying before Neo.

I think the trick to this movie is its implying everything was in Neo's head, he wrote all of it, and this movie IS the 4th game. We live the 4th game through the movie, just as we did the previous 3 (unaware that we are watching the game). That's why all the silly shit that is suggested through the montage comes to fruition in the movie. It doesn't rescue the just general poor movie making, but it does at least introduce a new way to watch the movie and appreciate what they are trying to do.

Resurrections was actually a message about Loosh farming and the Reincarnation Trap cycle. The "Swarm Mode" is about how half of the human population aren't actual humans-- or better yet true consciousness but are artificial/false consciousness here to ensure specific reactions from people through influence peddling. You have to research both Loosh energy farming and the reincarnation trap cycle to really get what this movie was trying to get across. That isn't to say that they did a good job or anything. This matrix however...well, you can't beat the FIRST (not 2nd or 3rd) original matrix...simple as that. Original copied (literally a copy paste, nothing else) of religious and metaphysical concepts, and converting them into cyberpunkish mumbo jumbo. It worked though. It’s not deep it’s just a bad movie simply made for money.
@Dragonpuncher1233 жыл бұрын
Personally I thought Resurrections sucked ass, but if you just see it as a cash grab you are clearly not getting it. Lana made a movie that has so much subtext about transitioning between genders like she did herself, that it almost hits you in the face. The movie uses so much of the framing of the original, but focuses on a single part of the journey, Neo finding out who he is, much like a transperson is forced to. It becomes clear that he and Trinity are made to be almost one connected person. One can’t live without the other, but by the end Trinity is the stronger more dominant force, as in the feminine side wins out. There’s a lot of talk about how people see you, vs who you really are, also an obvious analogy to transpeople yet to come out. And the end credits use literally the same Rage Against the Machine song as in the original, but song by a women to signify that the transition is complete. Like I said I wouldn’t call it a good movie, but it’s clearly not just a cash grab. Lana got free reins and made something quite personal.

just watched it. even with all the nostalgia...it was a parody of itself in the end. the ONE scene that encapsulates it for me is the one with the Merovingian. In the old movies he packaged his BS into philosophy and style, to justify what he does, as a survivor. in this one, he just was there to swear in french, making a parody of the parody. btw...no philosophy in this one, that would hurt brain cells. the original movies took themselves serious enough as dystopian phantasy. this one, not so much. everything is shrunk down and has no meaning. Smith for example is without meaning, and his power not explained at all (more powerful than the designer?). he is just a set piece to use for nostalgia moments (Smith fight subway, also taking over everybody...) there won't be any sequels. nothing more to tell. this just gives the characters a happy ending, which takes away from the original trilogy (sacrifice is part of the journey), and even kicks some old ones in the nuts (like, Morpheus basically didn't react and got Zion destroyed? thx). also, if you want to go a certain "message" route, it was in here also. like, powerwomen everywhere while old men suck, as always. as if these movies get made to destroy old heroes, because we can't have those. also, the design was way off, didn't resemble the old look at all for the worse. its crazy to think they did the style alot better 20 years ago, the action scenes in this one felt off alot of times.

Spoilers! I love the first three Matrix films and was eagerly waiting for this movie ever since it was announced, and I was shocked at how bad it was. The only positive things were learning how the machines and humanity can now live together in peace and harmony, and Keanu and Carrie's acting. But everything else... 1. Would it really have been that hard to bring an older Morpheus back instead of killing him offscreen and bringing in a machine fanboy to take his place? 2. So there was a civil war within the machines, and now Io is involved in yet another war, which left humanity once again enslaved in the Matrix means that Neo's sacrifice ultimately amounted to NOTHING. 3. Niobe is an unlikable jerk who gives Old Luke Skywalker a run for his money as the most depressed edgelord around. 4. The Merovingian (who is now king of the hobos) adds NOTHING to the film. AT ALL. He literally just stands there and yells at Neo about how much he sucks before shambling away like Gollum and is never mentioned again. You could have cut him and his goons out and saved us from that horribly edited fight scene. 5. Smith... oh my God, where do I even begin with Smith? Wasn't he deleted for good at the end of 'Revelations'? Why the FCUK would the machines even let him still be around when he, you know, TRIED TO WIPE OUT HUMANITY AND THE MACHINES AND ALMOST SUCCEEDED. Neo doesn't even seem to care when he realizes that his business partner is his mortal enemy. He's like, 'Oh.' and then they get into another pointless fight that adds nothing to the plot. like the Merovingian, you could have cut Smith out of the film entirely without affecting it at all. 6. Bugs is boring. Her crew are boring, get maybe one line each, and get no development at all. 7. Bugs sounds like she's mumbling most of her lines. 8. Why in heaven's name did the film need to make Trinity's release from the Matrix so freaking complicated?! Would it really be that hard to just unplug her and then whisk her out of the machine tower instead of Star Trek-level technobable about duplicating her brain waves? 9. The climax is a boring, generic escape scene that could have been taken from any thriller released in the past twenty years. It feels like it's building up to a spectacular finale, only to end without delivering said finale. 10. The film can't decide if it's a romance, a thriller, the start of a new series, or a reboot. It tries to do everything and fails. I hate banging on a movie that Lana Wachowski made to help cope with the death of her parents, but 'Resurrections' is a failure from beginning to end. The Matrix series deserved better than this.

Resurrections gutted me. I'm serious. I watched the trilogy millions of times when I was younger. I consider it the best action trilogies in cinema. Everything in this movie does the exact opposite the trilogy does. Me, you, everyone knows how potentially great a Matrix sequel can be. This isn't it. The script doesn't have that Matrix feel that it did where the characters get straight to the point while also explaining and asking things too. Everyone talks like they are in a Marvel movie. Love the Marvel movies but something felt off on the characters. Apparently the OG choreographer wasn't part of production which to me is a make or break for me. The shakey cam in the fight scenes made me disappointed knowing how capable all those actors still are. The stakes for The Matrix simulations have been lowered DRASTICALLY. Just like the movie there is little reason the simulation needs to exist if you think about it long enough let alone care about it. Some of the concepts they explored was cool but refuses to extend it further which was a pain. Like I said WE KNOW WHAT THE MATRIX MOVIES ARE CAPABLE OF. They pull the brakes at every given chance. The movie claims to give you nostalgia but somehow manages to give you the bare minimum at the same time! HOW? Keanu has had a long career. But something about him going going back to Neo does not feel like Neo its just Neo trying to be Keanu. I feel the directors did not give Keanu Reeves any pointers or anything to give him time to revisit the character. I'm not gonna lie I wasn't expecting it to live up to any of the movies we had in the past but this one kinda hurt me. As far as sequels, remakes, reboots, old franchises returning, etc. I can't remember a time where I kinda felt hurt from a movie I was supposed to get a little enjoyment out of even if I know it won't be good. This is different.

You want to read what a good Matrix sequel could be? Look up The Super Matrix. Corny ass title, isn't finished, ends on a cliffhanger, and written in Script format. But it's eons better than Resurrections.

i feel you man, i really really do. i was a huge fan of the original movies and went alone as a teenager on a school night to watch the midnight screenings for reloaded and revolutions when they came out in high school for me. i bought books on the philosophies explored in the movie, nerded out on its expanded stories in the games, comics, and mmorpg. this movie definitely gutted me the same way you explained. but (dont take this as a defense or redeeming factor for the movie), it is not the worst ive felt for a cherished childhood franchise, that would have to go to star wars the force awakens (which did what resurrections did as you explained for star wars) and the last jedi (which completely destroyed my hope for the future of the star wars at the time, i still have not watched rise of skywalker)..

Armchair film analyst here, and this is a small portion of the rant I could go off on. The biggest problems of movies these days IMHO are 1) too many scenes that don't change the outcome of the narrative, and 2) as others here have said, the lack of tension & stakes in climax-level choices. *Minor spoilers ahead* For example, for 1), why does the blue hair captain (can't remember her name, doesn't matter) get decommissioned by Niobe for finding Neo? The next scene the whole crew is back with Neo racing into the Machine City without any care of consequence. I guess they're just that cool. Lazily throwing in the Merovingian (one of my favorite OG antagonists) did nothing to advance the story, it actually turned the character's previous relationship with Neo into a cheap joke. Plenty of other useless scenes I could get into given enough writing space. For 2), a big turning point lies in Trinity's "red pill/blue pill" moment. It would have been far more impactful for the audience if there was at least 1 minute spent showing what kind of new life Trinity got in the Matrix. To me, her "family" meant nothing, I don't even know the names of her husband or kids. The audience knows it's a fake life from the start, because well it's the Matrix. This is a climax level decision for Trinity, but has about the same weight as someone deciding between a pair of pants that fits and a pair that doesn't. Another major gripe with 2), I don't buy for 1 second that some machines were "friendly" and wanted to help humans right after decades of war. Machines warring against each other? They are hive mind, non organic beings- a machine would (and has, see the breach of Zion in Revolutions) willingly die if it meant the hive would survive. Only human-imitating programs within the Matrix ever cared to help humans, and even then we aren't completely sure of their motives. " 'Love' is just a WORD," remember?? Even if some were truly sympathetic, the decision to befriend machines would have resulted in widespread distrust, split political factions, civil war, etc etc amongst the human survivors. The struggles of that transition could have had far more weight in the story, but instead a theme of unearned, unconditional tolerance between mortal enemies replaces that. All so they can help create a fake sky over Zion and eat some GMO strawberries. That is weak. Just rubbish world building. Every character except Neo and Trinity could have died and I would have felt nothing. The villains are generic, which is surprising considering Smith is still in it. The fight scenes are a major downgrade from the originals, but serviceable enough. All in all I was still entertained, but only because I had literally zero expectations, as I imagine many of us did. Another reboot film that was created purely as a money grab, the Netflix fan fiction version of an eternal series that didn't need another iteration. Thanks for reading.

The Matrix Revolutions ended with a peace treaty between the machines and humans. It wasn't that far fetched to see some of them collaborating in the sequel
@buddyWalrus3 жыл бұрын
@@cardinalrule6810 ahh so they made a peace treaty after years and years of enslavement and bloodshed, so it’s all good in the hood then? For most of Revolutions, Sentinels ripped humans apart with wanton abandon, but these new, supposedly trustworthy machines conveniently have a moral code now? What utter nonsense. With how many times the new characters violated those worthless “protocols” by (effortlessly) flying behind enemy lines, that peace treaty could go to hell in a hand basket real quick. But as we know, the proximity protocols have no actual bearing on the story. Remember when being around just 5 Sentinels was dangerous? Now we can just 5-sec hack our way straight into the heart of the Machine City! My suggestion, instead of that hot garbage, is to use that lingering tension between the surviving parties to show how dire the situation still is, that any misstep could result in the machines ending the treaty, and that the stakes are as high as ever. The enemy we do get is about as menacing as Dr. Evil from Austin Powers.

The entirety of this film was dedicated to meta "docudrama" bits, critiquing psychoanalysis [ the latest villain is an analyst who practically handicaps Neo ], and progressive arguments about body dysphoria, gender identity and the regressiveness of contemporary entertainment/media. All of which are essentially mainstream at this point, and would've been better stated in a different universe, rather than through the symbols and characters of the Matrix. As far as I am concerned, this film was both a middle finger to WBmedia and a half-assed attempt to resurrect any claims to its legitimacy as canonical sequal.
@buddyWalrus3 жыл бұрын
@@zasterheffor Even if the aim of the movie was to push this or that ideology (which in this case I’d agree is true to some extent), you still want good story telling to portray the creator’s vision, so that the audience can resonate with the characters and their decisions. As the movie stands, I just can’t relate to the characters. They do seem like mainstream media talking heads, albeit in some of the shorter scenes. Where the first Matrix had me asking, “what choices matter the most?” this movie has me asking, “is society just brainwashing girls into having offspring?” or whatever Trinity said in the cafe.

I'm beginning to think the first Matrix's best ideas were indeed stolen from other media (sci-fi books, anime) because the Wachowsky's have made a total of TWO good movies (if you count V for Vendetta, that is. They kinda shadow-directed it) in their entire career. You could really tell watching this how there wasn't a true desire to make this film. These kind of films really expose which critics are either not genuine when giving reviews/reactions because by giving good reviews = early access to stuff which leads to more online traffic...or they're just plain bad at their job.
