Actually, in Canada you can purchase online or at your nearest bookstore through a chain store called Indigo books. If you have a Rewards card it can save you some money. I did purchase the book you recommended. It is fabulous ! I like the chronology of events along with recordings and special events which coincide with the fab four during these crucial and life changing activities from '69 to '73. It's a small world how Paul and various people crossed his path along the way for his successful journey in music. This laid the foundation to his future decades without Linda, sadly by the time Off The Ground raptured her into eternal bliss. For Paul, that insecurity blanket of trauma and loss continued to be building blocks of even greater success that no artist can ever fathom. Thanks for the show. You are doing us a great service. Take care.

I just finished the book as well. It was a real page turner and hard to put down. Towards the end I was limiting my daily reading time as I didn’t want the book to end. I learned a lot about Paul and Wings. Most biographies and books don’t seem to focus as much in this period in depth, at least the ones I have read. Some of the stories made me cringe but we are all human and have those days and moments, even Paul McCartney, and some stories made me respect the man even more. The Beatles are a hard act to follow and Paul handled the start of his solo career in the best way possible, even if there were bumps in the road. I am excited that volume two is in the works.

I'm mostly interested in the RAM period. That album is maybe not Paul's best, but it has an overal feel and vibe no other McCartney album has. That's why I'm very fond of it.

I've just finished this book, and watching your review, you hit the nail on the head, Andrew. This really is the book we have always wanted on Paul. A magnificent book never thought I'd see anything like this for Paul. Warts and all, and that is a good thing. Really hope it does well, and that we see these continuing. I have found that in many books on Paul, the 70's are covered pretty well. It's the 80's and beyond that get less coverage. Something with this depth for the 80's, 90's and beyond would be a fantastic thing.

Fantastic review, Andrew! I also just finished the book recently and I was truly astounded, partly because I had no idea what to expect. I never expected it to include so much detail, that's for sure! I had no idea that so much information about his studio sessions was even available. One thing I really appreciated about the book, besides all the info, was the fact that the authors were very objective. I never felt like they were hyping McCartney or being too hard on him or on any of the band members. Funnily, I thought of your video about the "college tour" when the authors covered that bit.

I’ve read The McCartney Legacy up to the release and reviews of Red Rose Speedway. I applaud the authors for their meticulous research in producing the most comprehensive book on post Beatles Paul McCartney. However, the writing in places is occasionally a bit flat but it is a minor criticism only. Overall, it’s a great and significant addition to the library of McCartney books.

Hi Andrew. Thanks for sharing the new book. Amazing ! I agree. I also found the early period after the Beatles split and the formation of Wings is perhaps my fondest memories of Paul McCartney and his family, his band, his touring, his new albums and lest I forget, fantastic Single releases ! And of course, I cannot forget how the book reveals how he was treated by the Press, the Beatles fans, the ex-beatles, the lawyers, the money flow, and the pressures of getting new band members. It seems Paul was cursed with betrayal throughout various periods of his life. I think Paul's mother's death, as horrible as that could ever be, gave Paul rough edge, some toughness to push on and go forward in a revitalized manner. That never comes easy, but to me, that's how I feel how Paul had to deal. I thought it was so cool Paul took his family on the tours and the Press would scoff at him and the many scoffs with Linda in the band must have been incredibly broken to him, I am sure there are things brought out in the book which must be unbelievable how Paul got through in such success. I love those albums and I think the Band On the Run sessions are by far his best works, even though I love all this music, every last note. It should be a great read that you have recommended. Thank you, Andrew. Take care.

Thank you for the review. I have been picking up on your positive feedback for a while and is is good to get an overview now that you have completed it. I will be ordering it now. I have been putting it off for a while for various reasons but very soon I anticipate some available time to jump in. Just this week I ordered and read in about three days the Vashti Bunyan autobiography Wayward. It was stunningly good and has sort of whetted my appetite for more music based reading. I am also halfway through the Beatles in India book that you recommended. That too is proving to be an enjoyable, informative read about a less documented period. The McCartney Legacy will also provide an opportunity to go through the various Archive sets as I read. I sincerely hope that by the time we get to the next edition of this book Paul will have filled in the gaps musically so that I will be able to do likewise with volume 2. Thanks for the continuing updates, they are always an entertaining and enjoyable watch.

Andrew so many wonderful never heard before stories! Nick Lowe & Ian Gomm''s ( Hold on to what you got" is one of my favorite late 70's tunes.."Cruel to be Kind " by Lowe too) early 1970's band Brinsley Shwartz opened all the gigs on Wings 1973 tour. They were playing the cover of "Don't you ever change" that the Beatles covered in their Hamburg day (Its on the BBC discs) in their soundchecks and could not get in right...Paul who was listening to the soundcheck then told them how to do it. Later Gomm was playing "Love me do" after a gig in the hotel and Paul walked and picked up a guitar and joined but had to re-taught how it went by Gomm! Gomm later said that might have been the break the ice moment with Paul letting go the bitter past of playing Beatles tunes! I knew that Linda was hammered pretty bad by the British press....but man they were savage in their criticism of her singing and keyboard ability!

Still making my way through it. I’ve been waiting for a book like this one for ages. We’ve had plenty of the same old stories, so it’s so great to get much more depth and detail. I am about half way through. Fascinated by this book. Biggest takeaway: Paul's homespun family life, locked-at-the-hip relationship with Linda and the deference he is given by other musicians explains why his music was what it was at this time. Yes, the genius he had in The Beatles is there, but his life experiences and interactions (no more John and George to call him on half-baked ideas) show why he just never quite reached the heights he hit in mid to late Beatles as an artist. It was not my imagination. It would be hard for Paul to write Hey Jude in 1972

Andrew: Great review of a great, great book. You are correct, we have been waiting for a book like this for a long, long time and this book did not let us down. I have two small (very small) criticisms. One, the paper that the text pages are printed on, is really thin and cheap. I assume that's because there are so many pages in this book. But it feels almost like a paperback novel quality, to me. I almost felt as though, if I wasn't careful, I might accidentally tear the pages. And that cheap paper limits how well the photos are reproduced. Which brings me to my second criticism: The photo selection is pretty limited. I know this is not meant to be a photo book, although how awesome would it have been if they had approached the photos in the same was as the text-like The Beatles Anthology book?! But they didn't and that's OK. I think I'd have almost been happier with no photos at all, than very few that aren't reproduced as good as they could be. But neither of these complaints detract in any way from the book's depth and quality of the writing/content, though. It is a massive accomplishment. Like you, I really enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see if the future volumes treat his career with such great detail. Seems that every book I've read about McCartney, Dylan, etc., go into great detail for their 1960s/70s period and then just compress the 1980s/90s/2000s into a few chapters. I hope they don't do that, because McCartney has been a really prolific and creative man for his entire life with films/videos, painting, tours, radio shows, animation, books, charity projects, etc. There's still a lot of his story left to write about. Time will tell. Thanks, Andrew! I always look forward to your videos.
@AndrewDixonMusic

I actually found the thin paper an advantage, if you put the book down on a table or your lap to read, the page stays open where you want it, with thicker paper it would just flip itself over to a different page! There was one particular photo I hoped to see that wasn't shown, I think it was of Paul and Fela Kuti on stage, so I went online but unfortunately couldn't find it, so that was the one I remember thinking I'd have liked to have seen. But I can understand why they didn't want to make the book any bigger than it already is!
@bonesandapples
@bonesandapples Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewDixonMusic True. I hadn't looked at it in terms of keeping the book open and pages from "self-flipping." The lighter paper makes it a lighter book, of course and keeps it from being super thick or having to print it in two volumes. It just feels kinda cheap to me. I still love the book though, and can't wait for the next one. I've not seen that photo of Paul and Fela Kuti. That would've been a great one to include for sure!

I heard that the major complaint is the exceedingly small typeface. Why did you not comment about that aspect? It makes a difference.
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic Жыл бұрын
Agreed, I can imagine that being a problem for some. It didn't particularly register in my mind as an issue with thankfully being unaffected by that. But, definitely if it had registered more with me it would have been in the front of my mind to mention. Some have also commented on the thin paper used, I've actually found that an advantage, if you put the book down on a table to read, the page stays open where you want it, with thicker paper it would just flip itself over to a different page.

My take-away from Get Back is that if anyone in The Beatles was a dreamer, it wasn't John Lennon. Paul is away with the fairies for most of that film: totally in the zone musically, but unable to sustain a meaningful conversation with anybody for more than thirty seconds. If you imagine the Get Back Paul trying to lead a new band, having to navigate band politics, identifying and dealing with issues causing discontent... well, there probably wasn't a person less suited to that role. The book doesn't make me like Paul less; I think I understand him better. There are certainly some incidents that don't reflect well on him, but there are others that do. I like the way the book presents both with near-neutrality. Ultimately, if you want to understand someone at this distance then you need data, and that's what this book delivers in spades. My one big take-away from the book, by the way: boy, The Beatles should have signed with the Eastmans.
@Kieop
@Kieop Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. He's not very present with others. On the back of the book, Michael Lindsay-Hogg says that he has a restless mind. I think this goes to explaining a bit too why John and George felt that he was so insensitive and walked over other people's egos. He just doesn't think in terms of ego, so that makes him inconsiderate. He literally doesn't consider it. His mind is somewhere else. A lot of people think of Paul as being a natural extrovert b/c he enjoys performing, he makes time for fans and is generally a good "mixer" (more likely a survival skill from moving a lot as a kid). But I disagree. The definition of extrovert and introvert is not outgoing vs introspective. It's about whether you are energized by being with others or whether you need to be by yourself to recharge. Paul seems to need to go off by himself a lot. Going on walks, sailing his one person dinghy, writing songs in the field or in the car or under the stairs... One of the sources of tension on The White Album was Paul's penchant for going off on his own; it drove John nuts b/c he couldn't understand it. John said he tended to feel lost and not himself when he was on his own and needed other people around him. So it seems like the opposite of what we've been led to believe is true.

Andrew this is a compelling book an absolute joy to read. The book covers the key early development period of Macca solo / wings taking off. Extremely well written and researched. Would be a great idea to hold a book review video and subscribers could mention the revelations that most surprised or most interested them. I found many pieces of info which really opened my eyes.would be great to hear other folks biggest takes from the book. I had not appreciated the massive impact of the Beatles split on McCartney. Nor appreciate that having Linda in the band as keyboard player was such a controversial move. The loss of Denny Seiwell was very disappointing. The original band dynamic. The open bus trips for the university / European tours . The RRS double album that didn’t happen. The info on the album production process gives me a different perspective when listening to the early Macca. / wings albums now. The difficulties faced when recording BOTR. Lots of nuances that jolted my understanding/ recollections.

Thanks for reviewing this book, I am now more determined to read it myself. I find this early period of Paul's the most fascinating, I was a late teenager at the time and followed the events in music papers yet always felt there was a bigger story behind the scenes. Does this cover the recording of I Me Mine? Also as this book has an overlap period of the late Beatles it will be fascinating when we finally get Mark Lewishon's third book to see how the two books differ or have they collaborated at all.

Depends how deep you want to go. Tune In is the best, there's no doubt about that, but it's also the most in depth, and massive. It also only covers up to the end of 1962. So if you want to start at the beginning, I'd maybe suggest the slimmed down Tune In rather than the Extended Edition.

I really wouldn't worry about the thin paper unless you're very heavy-handed. I found it an advantage in some ways, because if you have the book open on your lap or table the paper just stays open at the page you want, with thicker paper it tends to spring back and you can't keep it open!

@@AndrewDixonMusic Brilliant, Andrew! Your reply is deeply appreciated! I also applaud how you have approached this review. No rush finishing fast, but simply enjoying the book page by page. I especially salute the notion of listening to the track you are reading about at the same time. I will try to copy you here! My only consern now is two other books silently shouting at me from the book shelf. I still haven't read "Tune In" and "The Lyrics" you see... Feeling a bit guilty there! But hey, it's never too late! Thanks again, looking forward to your next video, mate!

Edward, do you believe the authors deliberately held back printing "good light"? I'm almost complete with the read, I'm at the part near the end when Henry walked out on the band. I appreciate authors NOT sugar coating things, and telling it like it is. In fact I'm a bit peeved at McCullough for throwing the band under the bus by walking out right before they were prepared to record another LP. Paul was doing this drunk a favor by keeping him in the band and he had the nerve to still be unhappy with his work with Paul. This is a problem when you have folks addicted to substances, they are not dependable at all. Guess I'm just a page away from when Seiwell did the same thing!! Imagine your lucky stars putting you in a band with Sir Paul McCartney, and still not being happy!! I have always considered myself a big Paul fan, I'm first generation Beatles fan and I judge books by how much new info I gather. Almost done with my first read, going thru it again I'll be pulling out a big note book for all the new info to document.

@@brucetowell3432 I agree that the book has tons of new info. Regarding Henry and Denny. McCartney barely allowed them to make any contribution. Also paid them washers making it difficult to support themselves. And then being coerced into going to Africa on mccartneys jolly . I’m hardly surprised that they walked. Denny Laine was treated badly but his contractual situation to a previous manager probably meant he had no choice to tough it out with Mccartney

@@edwardrussell5989 Seiwell was allowed to do session work to earn extra income. Have yet to read the part where you say he was "coerced" into going to Africa. Paul's money I read was tied up within Apple, that's why he didn't have much ? They were living off Linda's wealthy relatives? And not using contribution from Henry and Laine? Well tell me how many great songs Paul turned down to record?? Wasn't aware that Laine and McCullough were such great songwriters!!! But I'll reserve any more comments until I finish the book.

@@brucetowell3432 seiwell had to do session work. On the 73 tour McCartney paid the support band more than his own band. I never said Henry and Denny wrote songs but like George and Ringo before them had to play the way McCartney dictated . Why would two seasoned pros put up with that? Plus McCartney had publishing royalties which were independent of Apple income.

@@edwardrussell5989 And for good reason! Hey that's fine, but to leave Macca and his wife right before recording an LP is bullshit and very low class. Henry was a drunk, no great loss there anyway. Denny was plucked out of an audition in some dingy flat in NYC, he threw Macca under the bus. But subsequently I presume they have made up. I heard a an interview with Denny last year, he asked Macca for permission to re do the "Ram LP" and Macca gave him his blessing. Guess he'll never do a "hippie" handshake again. But this is all to common in the bidness. Billy Joel has been screwed out of millions, and millions by not one but TWO different managers, and one was his brother-in-law!!! Little Richard, Chuck Berry, many of the founders of rock roll were taken advantage of by crooked managers within the recording industry. I don't know, I'm a pianist, amateur albeit, but any famous musician who would want me in their band, I'd drop what I was doing and go. But that's just me, and if I wanted out, I'd of course have the decency to give notice, especially someone of Macca's stature.

I read the sample available on Amazon and thought maybe this is not for me because they seemed to be going for a middle way in describing the music and its recording. I like either a simple description or a full on musicological treatment. However if Andrew Dixon gives it a 'thumbs aloft' then I might have to get it after all. Got to say though...that cover picture of Paul...dear me...what is that trying to say exactly?!!

Thanks for the great review. I'll definitely be getting this but I need to decide on a format. I recently got a Kindle and I'm enjoying it. Convenient & light-weight, ideal for a large book like this one. The adjustable-font is a great feature. One down-side: the quality of photograph reproduction is not very good. So my question is, are there many photos in the book, or is it text-only? Thanks!

Hi Keith, the text is a little smaller than usual, I didn't have a problem with it but if someone needs to avoid smaller text then the audiobook or eBook would maybe be a better option. I have absolutely no issue at all with the paper used. I read the whole book withouthe slightest damage/creasing to a single page. It also meant that if you open the book on a table it stays open at the page you want it to instead of flipping itself over to a different page, I regard that as a bonus!

About halfway through it now. One the positive side, it’s really well detailed and it’s fun to listen to the songs as they describe the recording sessions. Gives a new appreciation for Paul’s early albums, even though Ram is already my favorite of his. On the other hand, compared to Lewisohn, who writes as if he’s putting together an epic novel and had me laughing a lot in Tune In, this book isn’t quite as well crafted. It’s very matter-of-fact in writing about events. Also most of the footnotes are completely unnecessary, especially compared to Tune In which had footnotes and endnotes that added so much. It’s a good read so far. Really puts you into the mind of Paul as he struggles with the end of the Beatles and trying to pick back up his confidence as a songwriter and musician. But he also comes across as a huge dick at times. I’ve lost count of the amount of times Paul, Linda, or the Eastmans ask someone to do something unrealistic and they refuse, only for the McCartney camp to get pissed off and basically blacklist them. Very sensitive, demanding crew. Whether this is Paul’s ego at work or him trying to protect himself after being screwed over by the other Beatles and the hounding press, it’s anyone’s guess.

I agree it is.... I'm 71 and it's easier for me to pull out my reading glasses for this one. Also the foot notes are at the back of the book, which for me, is very strange. So there are so many I cannot keep going back and forth and breaking the rhythm of the read. Most books I read have the notes right at the bottom. Just the overall tidbits on every track, recording, how many takes, when they did them, how many over dubs, double tracking, ect.ect. it's amazing how the authors were able to acquire such detail!!! Speaking of detail, it's astonishing that Paul took so much time on recording "Hi, Hi, Hi". Think he took more time with this track than the whole Sgt. Pepper Lp!

Is remaster and remix album 💿 still tell the same story or different story?I think if an album is remastered and/or remixed, it’ll tell the same story but (hopefully) better.Sure! It’s a different album, more or less, depending on how much they changed things. For instance, ZZ Top did some radical remixes on their earlier albums, and older fans hated it. From their perspective, they were very different albums from the originals. What’s your opinion andrew is remastered/remix tells the same story?
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic Жыл бұрын
I think it can go either way depending on what they want to achieve. The 2 recent John Lennon remixes were more subtle as remixes but designed to showcase John's voice a little more, whereas the Beatles remixes are a bit bolder and probably have a different reason for existing. All Things Must Pass definitely wanted to tell a different story (more George less Spector).
