These two boys were spoiled brats but they were also abused sexually and emotionally by their father with a drunkard mom who wouldn't protect them. I have no sympathy for those parents. The brothers have to pay the price. However, I think they have been paying a price all their lives

My aunt, who was a public defender in LA County, was on this case. She believed them. So many girls who went through the same abuse in life and killed their parents didn’t get such harsh sentences. Yes, they were not innocent during their childhood, but she thought it was due to the abuse and trying to get attention. They ALL were not angels, but because the case was so high profile, the judge gave them the harshest sentence. The justice system is so out of whack. Peds get a year or two. Some murders get death. Gangsters get 5 to 10. It makes no sense how they decide sentences. My neighbor just got fined $500 for calling the other neighbor a F’n a- hole in response to him calling her a F’n c- -t. Him , nothing. Make it make sense!

I just read in the news that the brothers may receive a retrial after the Los Angeles County DA announced his office was reviewing critical evidence in their case. “Los Angeles County DA George Gascon said at a press conference on Thursday that his office was scrutinizing evidence that was not permitted in their trial, but repeatedly insisted that he was not committed either way to the validity of new claims surrounding their case. Specifically, Gascon said he was reviewing shocking allegations made last year by Roy Rossello, a former member of the band Menudo, who claimed Jose Menendez molested him as a teenager while he was working as a music executive in the 1980s. The allegations opened the door for the Menendez brothers' appeals over claims that critical evidence of their father's alleged abuse was not admitted in their 1996 trial.” Interesting 🤔 and what a coincidence that it was announced as I was just watching your video! 😊

I was young, but I do remember the trial and some public opinion at the time. The sobbing on the 911 phone call made the brothers look like accomplished actors and liars, and this perception colored the abuse allegations. Many people thought the boys killed their parents because they were spoiled and wanted control of all the money.

Controversial case. I remember watching the trial (I'm old). I believe the brothers, especially in light of what came out about Jose and Kitty later. The entire story is very sad. I think if it were 2 sisters, things would have gone VERY differently! Our culture now, but even more then, does not believe male victims.
@rebeccaramsey1274
@rebeccaramsey1274 3 ай бұрын
While that is true about male victims, a lot of people don't have sympathy for female victims who do things like this. Not believing boys and men is a huge issue, but blaming female victims for being abused happens a lot too. It's all just awful. I can't imagine what life is like for victims of violence and SA.

I'm surprised so many think they need to stay in prison in this chat. 😢 The emotion and detail and the letter and accounts and support of family and friends are undeniable to the fact of what was done to them. Someone should have saved them far before and the parents would have been on trial instead of them. I pray for their freedom 3 decades of good behavior and support continues. I can't wait for the hearing in November and I pray they get released as soon as possible.

I was a senior in highschool when this happened. I followed the whole trial. I still don't know what to believe. I mean. I tend to want to believe people who say they were abused. So many people are not believed. They cried real tears about it on the stand. But the way they lied at first and went on a spending spree rubs me the wrong way, so I just don't know.

I think a murderer can have multiple motives. And maybe they exaggerated some of their abuse claims? We'll never know for sure. What they did was wrong and the way they behaved in the aftermath was super f'ed up. But if they were paroled today, I would say that they had served a fair sentence and doubt they would reoffend.
@triciag3311
@triciag3311 3 ай бұрын
Yes, I agree, and I do feel they have served enough time and probably wouldn't reoffend. It doesn't excuse what they did, but if the abuse did happen, which as I said, I am inclined to believe it did, then that is a mitigating circumstance.

Do I think they should have gotten away with murder? No, I don't. However, I 110% believe they were abused and no one - NO ONE! - helped them. Daddy was a big part of Pedowood and I think that's why. They have family members who full well knew they were being abused (probably not knowing the full story of abuse) and not a one of them stepped up for those kids! Appalling. 😡

The whole thing was insane. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone because I remember all of the things from when this happened. They were both tried separately at first. There were family members and friends that corroborated the allegations of abuse. (And those are things people witnessed. What happened behind the scenes has to be so much worse.) BOTH trials resulted in a mistrial. Then they were RE-TRIED together, and the abuse allegations and all witnesses were ruled inadmissible, and they were both convicted.

These brothers were abused mentally, physically, and sexually throughout their lives. Family members supported their claims. While they did commit murder, they should have been allowed parole after 25 years, which would mean they would be out by now. Hi Sara!!!! This case weighs very heavily on my heart and mind. I do believe the claims of abuse. Jose was a wretched man, no doubt, and Kitty knew about it and did nothing. She was also abused and was an abuser herself. Complete dysfunction is an understatement. The boys grew up never having to face any consequences for their actions and behaved extremely poorly. HOWEVER, I believe they have paid their debt to society and should be allowed parole. I do not believe they pose any threat whatsoever to others.

I felt as though their acting abilities were put to the test during the investigation and the trial. I think if they had not been found guilty and gone to prison, both of them could have gone on to be actors. I do not know if what they said was true or not, but their abilities to convey their stories so convincingly at the first trial was impressive.

Love watching your videos & I love especially when you do something that’s popular in current media bc I like a little synopsis. However, I did watch Monsters and while some of it was dramatized, it was still really hard to stomach. And I feel like you skipped over a lot of the torture & abuse these poor boys went through. Heck even Kitty. All of it was horrendous and disgusting. Calling them “shit-brain boys” and saying they got everything they could ever want from their parents was not it…. I don’t think SA, torture, humiliation, physical and emotional abuse is what they wanted. They wanted loving parents. Editing to include that I did my own research after watching Monsters because I figured some of it was dramatized.

Without saying too much, one day I was in the waiting room of a psychiatric hospital and the TV was playing some documentary story about this case. I didn’t think this was beneficial for the audience in the waiting room, but I didn’t want to acknowledge it verbally so I asked the secretary to borrow a pen and paper and wrote “please change the channel” But seriously, a psychiatric hospital couldn’t find a more neutral channel to play in their waiting room? Why was I the first person to think of this?

Their lives weren't in danger at the time the murderers were committed. Other than their word is there any other evidence of assault? They're both prolific liars. Former friends and coworkers have described them as bullies and willing to do or say anything to avoid responsibility for their actions. It doesn't mean it didn't happen and I think the allegations would be handled better today than they were then. I don't know.

With the extreme privilege, the proven lying, and reckless behavior from them, i get that it is hard to believe them. However, extreme abuse is not just in poor communities. It is also incredibly common in high SES households. And we saw how bombed out the mom was. She wasn't doing that simply because hubby was sticking it in someone else. She was clearly running away from some shit. Let's just have an ounce of openness that their psychotic behavior could have been from abuse. It really does make sense. Let them have that truth as they sit in jail. Because even if it's the truth, they still committed premeditated murder so they should rot. They weren't in danger or anything.

Judging by your delivery, methinks you don't completely believe the claims of abuse. But haven't family members come forward as witnesses to their abuse? I mean, that doesn’t excuse their crime, but I think they should get a lesser sentence. I was like 9 when this happened and my parents didn’t follow these kinds of stories where I could see them. So my filter on this is entirely based on the presentation of documentaries and true crime KZbinrs and podcasts. It's interesting to see the divide in opinions on the abuse allegations.

My friend went to high school with Angelina Jolie. She showed me her year book. She was adorable in her gothic attire. I don’t remember if she mentioned the Menendez bros. I’ll have to ask her.

_Crime Weekly_ does a deep dive on this case and it's bonkers. You want to listen to this case without the silver screen feeling? Listen to this 8 part (2 hours per episode) series

@Tree4567Tree honestly I feel like Sarah really bulldozed through what Jose and Kitty did throughout this whole ordeal. Not to justify what the brothers did, but to understand why they felt the need to reach those level and _how_ they became so inept and resisted to become what daddy was hoping them to be.

Crime Weekly also left out a lot of stuff and a lot they got really wrong too. They were repeatedly called out in the comments and never addressed it even. So sad.

Im sorry, but i think their sentencing is fair. At the end of the day murder is wrong. They didnt leave because they didnt want to leave the money. They were adults and could easily moved out, could easily go to the police. Greed was their motive for murder. They wanted money, and didnt want to work for it.

I’m gonna say it so don’t come at me. But with everything that has been coming out on the Diddy case. You look at how these boys acted and now you’re looking at how Justin Bieber acted. I’m just saying it makes sense when people lash out when they’re being abused. I survived a severe domestic violence relationship. I’m lucky to be alive. Again that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to take someone’s life. It is hard when you’re under a control like that to reach for help especially with someone with that much power and money. I understand. But these boys were old enough and clearly had enough money. They could’ve walked away from their parents. It’s sad all around.

Wait, if they had never confided in eachother about the abuse then what was the motive? That kind of changes what I was thinking I was leaning towards. They were abused boys into the father and mother were monsters. Maybe I’m misunderstanding what was said, but if they hadn’t told each other, why would they want to kill their parents?

If Gypsy Rose Blanchard is free, so should Erik and Lyle be free.
@cassie1264

Gypsy did benefit from the justice system's gender bias and committed her crime in a day and age when victims are taken more seriously. However, she also chose to plead guilty to 2nd degree murder while Lyle and Erick claimed they were innocent and the killings were purely self defense. Their legal team should have advised them better, because the evidence clearly showed that the murder was premeditated and Kitty and Jose were ambushed. Because of their defense strategy, the jury had no choice but to convict them of 1st degree murder. The judge had 2 options for sentencing - life without parole or death penalty. He gave them the most lenient sentence possible. They should have negotiated a plea deal.

I absolutely love, love, love your videos ... but I just wanted to also share that you guys might find the Crime Weekly series about this family helpful for more information. Stephanie and Derek do a super deep-dive so it is a big commitment to watch all of the videos, but it was incredibly eye opening and changed my opinion in many ways after hearing what they went through. It is devastating! 😢 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqXPmKOql6t2f9k

I think they deserved some prison time, but not this long at all. They were abused in every way including SA. There mother did nothing. The family knew . Not to mention there father would possibly harm them if they said anything or even tried to go live a life they wanted. He made them do and live the way he demanded or else. If they got away there father would have made there lives hell till the day he died. He was rich and powerful and the boys knew that there dad would not get in trouble if they went to the cops. They literally believed this was then only way out to be free, stop the horrific abuse, and live there lives. They were privileged money wise but who would choose there lives with a bunch of money but in turn your dad gets to abuse you mentally, physically, and incest abuse by there father and maybe mom. At minimum there mother was so neglectful and to me, she was just as guilty. These boys truly have lived a horrible life and still are. If there were girls I would guess they wouldn't have been convicted. And parents of children who were murdered or assaulted by pedos get off free after they murdered the monster, why do the boys not get any kind of grace?
