As an intermediate skilled boat builder by hobby (my dad and I built canoes, pirogues, and small skiffs for years) any repairs on the Merry would likely have required more effort than just straight up building a new ship, with roughly the same amount of material expenditure.

That's right, the keel is like the foundations of a building. It's the matrix on which you start building the ship. If it breaks you have to start all over again because it's what gives integrity to the entirety of the structure.

@@Menditarra Yep, it's also kind of a phylosophical dilemma. In Theseus's Paradox, whether an object is the same object if you change all of their parts. They need to dissassemble, change damaged ones and reassemble ALL the parts so basically building a new ship.

I was in college when this arc was in progress and my friends and I were legit placing bets on who the next member of the crew would be. We were pretty set that it would be one of the following: Iceburg, Paulie, Lulu, Kaku or Lucci. My money was on Kaku.

Like kaku said, and let me explain what a keel is myself too. Keel in any ship is like the foundation of any house. It's the long section of log that is build before anything else is added to it. A keel determines a ship's original shape and decorations follow after the ship is built functional.

A member of the crew? Yes, Merry is indeed a member of the crew. Just as the shipwrights said, they can build a ship that looks just like her but it won't be Merry. It reminds me of my last car. I had that thing for 14 years. I knew her quirks and abilities, her flaws and features. She had a name. And when I had to replace her, I knew that even if it were possible to get something that at the exact same model with the exact same features, it wouldn't be the same car. And I would be reminded of that every time I drove. That's why they can't replicate the Merry. It wouldn't be the same. And they would know.

So, I went on a long journey after hearing about Merry's keel and ended up following a shipbuilding channel for about 6 years. There I learned it is actually possible to fix the keel. But like the shipwrights mentioned, you would need to rebuild the ship practically from the ground up.
