also it was hama who said it could only be done during the full moon. but hama wasn't all that powerful, katara was stronger than her and she was still a child. so it makes sense that a fully mastered waterbender could exceed these limits. most likely the average bender just isn't strong enough to do hard techniques without the extra boost of the full moon, but someone who's been training since birth would logically become much stronger than the average bender.

@ To add on to that, hama thought she discovered bloodbending. Yakone’s family hail from the northern, while hama came from the southern. Yakone claims that his family comes from a line of bloodbenders, so that must mean that his family practiced bloodbending in secret, even before Katara outlawed it. There’s no telling how long bloodbending practitioners studied the art in the northern water tribes.

Also, about blocking/sealing bending physically - Azula kinda damaged Aang's "avatar state" with her lightning attack, and then in the last episode - he just hit a random rock with his back and got it back, so here's that. Chi-blockers (Ty Lee and others) block bending with physical attacks too.

@@GummyCalico I mean, Aang's avatar state was sealed "permanently", until he found his favorite rock to land on. Chi-blockers hit points, that lets you bend. Acupuncturist here! Blood/chi stagnation (or blockage) is a real thing in traditional eastern medicine, and this stagnation can mess up your health depending on where it is. Within the world of avatar they have already established that certain chi points block bending so if Amon can use the blood bending to more permanently create a stagnation, or block of chi in those points, that is totally plausible! Depending on how bad a blockage at a point, it can be incredibly difficult, if not impossible for it to wear off or to unblock it without help (this is one principle behind what makes acupuncture work!) Hope that was fun info!

Full moon simply makes every waterbending more powerful - so probably makes such advanced styles easier. But if you are just skilled enough - or as Yakone said, their family had the strongest bloodbender-genes, then it might not be necessary.

Amon’s martial arts are top notch, but he uses Bloodbending on people trying to attack him to slightly redirect their attacks to make it seem like he dodged properly, so that he’s always out of harm’s way. What he does with Bloodbending is indeed disconnect whatever neurological relationship there is between the brain and bending by simply limiting the amount of blood there is in that area, or so some people believe.

@levi5302 where was this stated? Cause if that's true then that is an insult to every waterbender and bloodbender alive for not being strong enough to be able to do it without a full moon. What makes best sense for the lore is if its a talent within a talent that is specific to their bloodline, just like yakone said... kinda like how you have to have a certain talent to learn metal bending like how toph found out not everyone can metal bend in the comics and just like the other sub bendings. Its clear that bloodbending isn't a skill every waterbender can learn

Well, in ATLA bloodbending NEEDED full moon BECAUSE full moon gives a big boost to your waterbending. Hana (or Hama, whatever) could take water from flowers and trees during day, so its not REQUIRED to manipulate water in living organisms. Its just very hard, and full moon lowers the requirements. So it actually makes a lot of sense that you can just LEARN to do it during the day.

Great episode guys :) can't wait for more also just wanna add my two cents on the bloodbending without the full moon thing: 14:26 i understand that line of thought but personally i disagree. in essence bloodbending is just the power to override someone's will and autonomy, i believe that's extremely difficult to do. Because the full moon empowers them so much is pretty much the only way they're able to overpower another person in that way. that is, until something unique comes along. like sokka said in yakone's trial, there exist very unique benders unlike any other and he gave the example of combustion man who is firebending but in a way never before seen. i dont think mako would be able to do that if he just practiced long and hard enough, i'm fairly certain it was something unique to combustion man *genetically*, and i think yakone is another example of the same phenomenon. and then both noatak and tarrlok happened to inherit that from him bc yknow. genes lol and now my spoilerish thoughts on amons ability to block bending . . . they nailed the theory dead on i think lol. at least that was always my interpretation. and carlie might protest at everything being explained by chakras, but i always thought that was the best explanation genuinely. how else would doing something physical like bloodbending not impede any other bodily function besides bending; you can't just block a blood vessel without destructive consequences. waterbending is the second most spiritual element or something like. and on top of that amon can bend psychically too. so i dont knowww i honestly do think he figured out how to block a persons chakras. i havent read a lot of the side content for this universe so idk if there's more info about chakras that i'm missing but yea

With the bloodbending and the full moon - the thing is that bloodbending takes a lot more power than regular waterbending, so normally you need to be a powerful bender AND have the boost of the full moon, so either these 2 and their father were far more powerful benders so they didn't need the boost, and it was stated that they were very powerful benders, or they have refined the technique so they are doing it better and therefore it takes less power. Personally, though I don't believe it has been said anywhere, I think it is a mix of both.

If Amon can bloodbend people and make their ability to bend go away, it means bender ability is stored in the blood. Or it might be stored in the brain and muscles, and Amon's able to move the blood so specifically inside victim's body that they make them "forget" how to bend.

Amons technique must follow the established rules of bending, which state elements are influenced and moved through chi, which is an energy that moves through the body. Waterbenders can manipulate this energy with their own chi using water as catalyst, which is how healers stimulate healing in the body. Therefore Amon must use a reverse form of healing, in which he influences the chi in the body to close the chi paths and "turn off" bending, using the person's own bodily water as catalyst, thus technically using bloodbending to do it.

I think it's kinda dumb to be dogmatic about fictional canon. Bending is a made-up superpower, and like any superpower, its limits stretch and distort to fulfill the needs of a story's themes and conflicts. It's kind of like being mad about theoretical limits to Superman's power or the exact expression of different kinds of kryptonite or whatever - they are all only as real and necessary as they need to be for story being told in the moment. There's no specific reason, other than magic, that any technique of bending requires any specific circumstance. I guess a better example is the Force. For years, decades, the Force was really limited in what it could do. There was no magical or mystical nature to a lightsaber, you couldn't teleport around, there wasn't even really healing. It was very constrained. Then in the 2000s, Clone Wars and eventually Rebels came along and basically said "nah, it's full-on magic," and blew the doors off of the thing. Those changes are necessary for the story they wanted to tell. I don't have to like it, but they don't owe an explanation or anything of why it changed. Though, in their case, they just said "Nah, all that old stuff doesn't county anymore; only the Disney stuff."

*****Important distinction here*****, when aang took ozai's bending , he said it was permanent. Every once in a while the spirits gifts some benders with extra-ordinary abilities. like blood bending , combustion man, metal, and other stuff you will find out in season 3. Blood bending is different from how your bending is taken. Amon uses blood bending to make you kneel and submit. That power is independent from the power he uses to take your bending away. Even tarlok doesn't get how its done. ****

I feel like your suspicions of the characters are getting in the way of your understanding of their motivations. I personally find it difficult to believe that anyone who’s watched to this point doesn’t sympathize with Amon’s cause at least a little bit. I really wish you’d left in the part where Tarrlok says “I believe that Amon truly thinks that bending is the source of all evil in this world.” After seeing their tragic backstory, this line should affirm to you that Amon is simply a radical solution to a real problem. He said himself at his rally that “bending has been the cause of every war in every era.” Non benders are genuinely oppressed. I love your reactions but I really thought you guys would at least talk about the thematic elements here.

The problem with the romance was unavoidable for two reasons. 1. They're writing teen characters and 2. They were writing a female protagonist for the first time. Aang had some romantic elements but because they were kids obviously it couldn't be a focal part of the main story because that would be weird. It was always a B or C plot and that was for the best. Frankly that's how romance should always be in a series or film unless it's genre specific. Most of us don't love YA movies and TV shows. I avoid them like the plague and unless you are a teenager you probably avoid them too because they're a bit cringe. We all were at that age and we don't like to be reminded of it. That's what the romance in Korrah felt like, a young adult TV show. The series creators were also men writing a female protagonist for the first time and there's always that idea that women like romance. The romance was never going to be good no matter what they did.

*Spoiler* 6:10 - This. This right here is what's wrong with LoK. This right here, never changes throughout the entire show. This character flaw never grows, is never overcome and is never confronted. What was so great about ATLA was the character writing. The growth of the characters. Noone in LoK changes. Not any of the side characters and not Korra, herself. You could call it confidence, but the events of the Avatar world will prove it to be arrogance. And not only does Korra never overcome it, by the end of the show, with how the events play out, it doubles down into that delusion of confidence. I like Legend of Korra, but this is the root of the comparison with The Last Airbender.
