Elaborating on that, the city is making them, as a thanks to Oda for donating an absurd amount of money (like 8 mill USD, IIRC) out of his own pocket in the name of Luffy, after the town was hit by an earthquake. Needless to say, the statues that are spread around the city are paying themselves, as they are a massive touristic hook.

Kaku is an orphan who's 6 years older than Usopp. Fanfic time with that timeline: And adventurous Banchina made Kaku, contracted whatever killed her, and left Kaku with his father in the Grand Line. She then settled on Syrup Village where a celebrated doctor, Kaya's father (that would explain their money, and Kaya wanting to become a doctor), treated her in secret. There she met Yassop, fell in love and so on, but lied to him about her sickness. When she finally came clean, he couldn't handle it and left (or he wanted to track down Kaku for her before she died and failed, take your pick depending on what trait you want for fanfic Yassop). Shame prevented him from coming back. Let me know if I messed something up, but I think everything fits properly.

​@@Otaku_editz-04 I haven't written anything in about a decade, though... But now that I've re-read this, I will elaborate it a bit more. Kaku's father had a square (but small) nose and face. He was a low rank Marine, but not a bad guy, just unremarkable. Banchina abandoned him and Kaku solely because of her sickness. She got diagnosed when giving birth to Kaku, and she didn't want him to lose his mother, so she left before he would learn to recognize her as such. She ended up in the Gecko islands by happenstance, she only wanted to put enough distance between her and her family as possible, so that they wouldn't find her, but she wasn't even able to leave the East Blue (yes, Kaku is from the East Blue, too). Similar to Kuro, she collapsed near Kaya's manor, and Kaya's father treated her, and everything I said before. Kaku and his father stayed behind, and while he tried looking for her, he didn't have a clue of where to start. Finally he gave up. One fateful day, he met his demise at the hands of an up-and-coming pirate named Krieg. A toddler Kaku was left orphaned at the base, and taken in by Cypher Pol. He was taken to the homebase of CP9, and the rest is history. As for Yassop, I will choose that he set off to look for Kaku to return him to Banchina before she died. He managed to find out a bit about the kid, that his father died, and even that he was taken by Cypher Pol. In fact, one of the reasons why the Redhaired Pirates attacked Who's Who ship was to try and find information about him. That's also one of the reasons why they stayed that long in the East Blue. But eventually he got word of Banchina's death, and too ashamed to face Usopp, he gave up. Ok, I like this too much, now, so I will save a copy of it xD

Makes sense since most of the world seems to consist of medium to small islands, not to mention how the technology of the One Piece world is for the most part a pre industrial era type of vibe with candles instead of lightbulbs, flintlock pistols instead of guns, sail ships and not motor driven ships and so on. There's one thing you must know while watching this arc, especially looking at Robin looking at the others in this scene. Robin is 28, a full on adult, the rest of the crew is 19 or younger, so through her eyes, they are mostly kids still. With no real tangent about the weight of the world yet. That is a lens you see things only after quite a few viewings, or if you're incredibly smart at 1st viewing.
