Nick, stop giving yourself a headache... Swap out the hot glue gun for clear silicone in a caulking gun. It will seal correctly the first time as long as you let it dry for about an hour. Also, once you run the bead, wet your finger and smooth the silicone down which presses it into any cracks.

taleandclaw rock you clamp it down really tight. I guess you could also put silicone on the very edge of the "river" cavity so that there's a tight seal between the wood and the surface you're working on. You should be able to peal the silicone off or sand it after the resin has set (I'm not sure if this last thing works though, it's just an idea)

Thankfully it wasn't cured yet, marine grade epoxy, I did try Acetone and that just made a slimy mess. as the mistake was mine in the first place the heat gun soften up the resin so I could push the putty knife along underneath it fairly easily. it was a lot of work but faster in the long run than any of the other options I'd tried,

We made various parts for boats, everything from cleats, tie downs, railings, ladders and just about anything made of aluminum that would be part of a boat. I mention it because we would save all the swarf in 55 gallon drums, at the end of the month someone would go around the shop taking drink orders. We'd turn all that scrap into a recycling center and have a party, food, drinks, music. Good times. Tables look great, I don't mind the long video when there's something to show for it. Without a frame the two pieces will eventually fall apart. Resin is for internal lake/river-type formations, not fo cementing two fine pieces together.
@goldbunny19735 жыл бұрын
I think so too and it would be a shame to let that happen rather than create a sturdy tabletop first then apply resin to it. I'd use a whole piece of wood, jigsawed out the riverbed and filled with resin or maybe use a thinner plank + apply metal bracing to ensure it didn't split apart later.

hundreds of guys are doing it the same way : as long as you sand the bark for the resin to stick to the strong wood, it will be like one piece of wood...
@shanarablue3395 жыл бұрын
Depends on size, a lot of guys use wood dowels on their work or dovetail pegs if it's large, but as long as prep is done right should be ok for smaller peices like this, I have used metal plates on mine as used for holding a bathroom sink .

The design of the legs should prevent the table from coming apart
@camouflagepeacock64145 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that also. I thought he would have put the legs on the other direction for strength. But then, he did it and I just watched! lol

Love the black table that turned out awesome! Not as keen on the orange one was literally yelling at u to use red as the orange unfortunately looks like the metal is rusting/rusted 🤦🏻♀️ just my opinion great job all round
@juliebaker69696 жыл бұрын
I thought that same thing, and besides, I don't like orange anyway. But they actually DID come out looking like silver and gold. Frankly it managed to both salvage and unify what I thought were going to be two mismatched looking tables. The part that killed me was when he sanded off the bark, I thought that the bark was one of the best features.

Julie Baker I agree I loved the bark too
@johnlloyd23906 жыл бұрын
@@juliebaker6969: Yes, the bark would have made the "natural edge" look even more natural. The problem is, while you may want the bark to stay on, the bark, itself, has other ideas. Eventually it will flake off and fall on the floor unless it's glued back on. Even then, thinner layers will chip and rub off.
@juliebaker69696 жыл бұрын
@@johnlloyd2390 not if you coat the entire table with plastic like he did, the layer of plastic will seal the bark in, and prevent it from falling off. Especially if you add an extra layer of plastic over the bark for good measure.

You should put colored sand in resin and make sort of an hourglass. That would be neat.

Looks GREAT!!! Love it!!! I watched how people make jewelry with resin and to make sure that things that have to stay in a certain spot in the resin, they wait for the resin to cure a bit and then add what they want to it before filling it up all the way. You could've started with a clear resin poor to get the layer of resin you wanted on top. Wait for it to dry (won't take as long, cause it's just a thin layer). Then make your coloured resin and poor in a very thin layer again and then add the shavings. Wait for it to dry again and then poor more coloured resin in. Wait for it to cure but not all the way and add some shavings to it. Because it's hardening, the shavings won't drop all the way down. Continue by pooring the last bit of coloured resin to finish :) To do the bottom first, you just wait with the shavings until you reach the top. Or wait for each batch to cure halfway and then add shavings to it so they won't sink all the way.

In the future I would recommend a dust mask when sanding metal because you definitely don't want that stuff in your lungs.
