NTG has slightly better low frequency response in your environment. A small adjustment in EQ wuold level the playing field..

What also comes in handy for my with the m5 or nt5 is the high spl input of 140db. Perfect for recording loud cars or drum sets

I can totally relate to your take on camera conspiracy. At first I thought he was a complete idiot but now I really enjoy his approach.

The M5 is one of the best indoor mics I have come across for the price. I would still keep the ntg5 for outdoor use.

lol audio is 50% the experience. A lot of people go thru camera gear and forget the audio experience or cheap out on it. Just like cameras, audio gear depends on what you are doing.

Cool video, just the right length for the amount of info, thanks! Just bought an M5 for some car exhaust audio we'll see how that goes.

The road M5 is not a shotgun microphone it is a small diaphragm condenser that does not have the resistance tubes on the side, shotgun microphones have something called resistance tubes and they actually listen for unwanted sounds to cancel out the unwanted sounds, You're indoors and there's some reverb your voice is going into the front and it's also balancing back into the front and the size of the microphone in the form of river but split second later which can cause phasing issues on a shotgun microphone when used indoors and a non-sound treated the room so this little M5 is not a shotgun microphone and it'll work great indoors, reverb really doesn't have a lot to do with polar patterns but a polar pattern that doesn't pick up as wide of a range like a super or a hypercordoid might get a little less reverb something like a regular cardioid will be less of like a laser beam focus pick up and I'll pick up a little bit more of the sound to the left in the right to wear a hypercardoid or a supercardoid pick up a little less from the left of the right but no matter what you still have sound bouncing off your walls your floors your ceiling your desk and the only way to really get rid of that last little bit of river is get the mic between three and six inches and in front of your face that way you're actual voice is way louder than any of the sound in the room which gives you a much better signal to noise ratio which is why you see a lot of people with the microphone 2 in in front of their face like you would do with your road pod mic but if you're using a condenser microphone on the desk or from a distance you're definitely going to hear reverb unless you're in a perfectly sound treated room, no polar patterns going to fix that but a narrower polar pattern could help slightly

In a non proofed home studio you want a dynamic microphone much more than a condenser microphone, so something like a Shure SM58 or SM7B will get rid of all that reverb/echo. I have a small office that has live server racks, bare walls, etc, and nobody hears any of that in my videos. Only thing is, for talking head the mic kinda needs to be close to you vs further away like a condenser shotgun, but for those cases I would go with lapel microphone. Reason SNR (Signal to noise ratio) you can pick up your voice at a much higher (signal) than the echo or other room sounds (noise). As for these mini cardioid condenser mics, I would run a head to head with the Lewitt LCD 040 against the M5, you would once again cut the price and they do just as good as the M5's IMO, and are smaller as well.

Great video. Since you've posted this was wondering if you had the chance to compare the M5 to the Samsun C02? I own the C02s and they are not usable in my applications, waaaay too much "noise"/hiss, even with noise reduction in post. Just wondering if there is similar noise/hiss with the M5? Or if there are any here in the comments that own both? Thoughts? Thanks...
@seandewispelaere2 жыл бұрын
I haven't, but maybe someone in the comments has? The M5 is ridiculously good for what it's worth
