I love that you mention the character development is a little thin but that the actors are so good at what they do that it doesn't matter. You just made me realize something that I wish I had put into my review. The "character" in this film was actually the mission or maybe the team as a whole, and not a single person (I know that sounds a little weird, but we're talking about Guy Ritche, right?). The mission was the character and all of the people, the plan, the action, etc were the visual embodiment of its development as the central "character" in the story. It's kind of a weird way of looking at this film, but I think this is why the movie works. Great breakdown of the film, Chris.

The real SOE had quite a star studded 'cast' - people involved beyond Fleming included Christopher Lee, Maskelyne the Magician, Douglas Fairbanks jr, Jon Pertwee, and Peter Ustinov. There were a lot of people from the West End from costumes to make-up to management whose names would mean almost nothing now, who were heavily involved in something not wildly different to the Q Division in the Bond movies.

The rest were Germans basically standing around waiting to be killed. You don't really get to know the "heroes". The introductions of the heroes is someone telling us "This is ______ , they do this___". Alan and Henry are the best thing about it.

Is there a reason why people believe every movie has to be about caring about the characters? If you’re more focused on world building than character, then you’re a world building Director. If you’re more focused on character writing, then world building, then you’re a character focus Director. Some directors don’t have both, but their characters are driven by personality only. You’re not supposed to know everything about them. You are there to be entertained by them for two hours and nothing more because that was never the direction. 🎬
