So in order to make a clever offensive joke about the trans experience for example, they'd have to actually read up on the subject,... Since they haven't done even a minute of research outside of their trans = groomer echo chamber of nonsense, they'd either joke about that for the millionth time or make another attack helicopter joke,... Worse, by "apologizing" for the joke, you're merely playing into the hands of the PC police by all but admitting you're a social outcast, and "deserve" your marginalization. But, more to the point, by apologizing, you're making the joke less funny by robbing it of its power. If you're going to tell a joke, don't preemptively "justify" it. Just say it! You know, the thing that birthed comedy? Making fun of things that the powerful would usually not like? Comedy is about release for the people who view it. You don't have to like "conservative" comedy, the same way many other people don't like "woke" comedy either. You want to talk about forced laughter when you literally HAVE to make yourself laugh at most of the "jokes" woke comedians tell. You want to talk about people who are hurting or oppressed having jokes made about them while simultaneously oppressing or demonizing everyone with different views than your own. Its pretty tone-deaf. Do you not see the irony in doing so? The weirdest thing about Linehan saying you can’t make jokes anymore is his old shows like Father Ted have well-crafted jokes that are generally inoffensive. Father Ted hasn’t been attacked for regressive views or anything like that. It’s just a silly show. The IT Crowd had one episode that I would call trans problematic rather than intentionally transphobic, but he just refused to take any criticism of it and spiralled down into this absolute mess of a person. Honestly, I don’t think he’s really trying to become a comedian at all, he’s just so obsessed with trans people that he wants to be heard being offensive now. He just wants to push his views now and doesn’t really care about making people laugh anymore.

Comedians, as a whole, tend to be the kind of people who were the weird kids in school and were in no danger of being popular in high school. Heck, often they became the class clown mostly because being seen as funny is still better than being seen as weird. That and humor is a common coping mechanism when it comes to people with mental illnesses or who are neurodivergent. This is why comedians tend to be more willing to live and let live when it comes to people’s’ eccentricities. Plus, people being eccentric is how they pay the bills; gotta mine for material somewhere. Conservative comedians are the jocks who spent high school bullying the weird kids and unfortunately, they managed to make a career out of it. Their humor explicitly relies on the suffering of others, and anyone who has had the misfortune of arguing with conservatives online, know they love to use humor as a dodge, going all, “I was only kidding; god, why do you have to be so sensitive about everything!” Conservatives are basically Goliath, wondering why no one will take their side in the fight against that David-asshole.

These performances are not funny because hating or denigrating someone is not fun in itself. It's not a fun, light-hearted activity that is comedy. That's why I think a better term would be a sermon, a rant, a support group for people with common sensibilities or attitudes, anything but certainly NOT comedy

"Ideas about communism were popular in America." So much so that the writer of the Pledge of Allegiance, Francis Bellamy, was a socialist. President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add in the "under God" bit. Bellamy's daughter objected to the change

There's a Chapo bit I think about a lot where I think it's Matt Christman hypothesizes that the reason conservative comedy tends to be so unfunny is that halfway through telling a joke they keep on making themselves legitimately angry and it throws off the pacing you need to tell a decent joke because they get wrapped up in that anger (I also think Cody Johnston is onto something about how modern conservative comedy is foremost focused on showing political allegiance and actual comedy is a very distant secondary objective- this happens especially with jokes about minorities I've found because if you find a group of people inherently ridiculous, then you spend less effort crafting a joke because hell, we're already a punchline in their eyes)

Matt always brilliant. Has Matt come back to the show since his stay in the hospital?

Yes, I think there's something to this! And, to be sure, left-leaning comedians can suffer from this, too. I saw Margaret Cho live in the early 2000s, and her whole bit was basically seething and ranting about Shrub and the Iraq War, and I was so bummed that none of it was funny---and, yes, it overwhelmingly evoked clapter from the audience, and no real laughter.

Ya know, I just realized that Gen Z figured this out. You can shut down Nick DePalo's entire rant with the phrase "OK Boomer." Keep this phrase going everyone.

So much of their "humor" only works if you look down on others. That and just repeating buzz phrases

If it punches up is comedy. If it punches down it's conservative comedy

I really enjoy listening to the stuff you create, especially your hilarious and scary podcasts about Matt Walsh. I also enjoy your crazy brave work on that church. There are some fun comedy clubs in St. Louis if you ever come out here, I'd come see ya!

It's truly baffling how they have the confidence to stand up there with such unfunny and cringe sets. They are doing standup with literally the only people who might laugh at their jokes and even they know it's not funny. Like has no one told them? Are they just so deluded that they think a couple chuckles means they're killing it? Are they incapable of feeling embarrassment?

I think the reason conservative comedy sucks so bad is ultimately the appeal isn't too laugh at the jokes themselves, but to spite-laugh at the imagined strawman leftist that would get mad at the 'jokes. When Crowder is confusingly doing a racist impression of an Indian stereotype to represent an Arabic person, they aren't laughing at the impression itself, they're laughing at the idea of a 'triggered woke SJW' with dyed blue hair typing a 5 paragraph Twitter thread on why that joke is racist and unacceptable so an epic cool alpha cishet man can dunk on them epically by replying "TRIGGERED MUCH?" in all caps. That's why the crowd laughed so hard at the 'that's gonna get a comment on Media Matters' line. They're not laughing at the material itself, but at the idea that the jokes would be upsetting to someone. It's all about cruelty in the end. As with all things in conservative culture, the primary motivation and driving force behind their actions is the idea that they'll make someone else uncomfortable or upset.
