In the weeks leading up to Christmas 1958, the Martin family were looking forward to gathering greenery for their home decorations. They set off in father Kenneth’s
1954 cream and red Ford Country Squire Station Wagon, just after lunch...it was the last time they were ever seen alive.
A important piece of evidence would point the finger of suspicion towards their estranged son, and several months later a drilling rig disturbed the family’s final resting place; but still their car has never been brought to the surface.

True, but I think the reason for killing the sisters was in addition to being witnesses, was that if he felt his parents were harsher to him than his sisters or that the parents loved his sisters more than him then I can see the resentment he could have had towards them because he would have felt they were loyal to his parents and he being the black sheep.

It could even be to as a means to have as little association with his families death. He already did not help in the search. If he gave people a chance to question him in person, it would probably be harder for him to keep it under wraps. It is easier to get away with murder if the detectives and citizens are left with more questions than answers. They already have little evidence to interrogate him, so it was easy for him to get away with ignoring it all. Moving to Hawaii was probably an indicator. He was trying to leave it all.

Living lifelong in Washington state, I've heard about this case off and on for many years, Oddie Beau. I have come to the conclusion that the son probably was behind this, hated his family, and hired killers to murder them, supplying the gun to do the job. I've never understood why it was never properly investigated, and no real effort was made to bring that car up from the Columbia....it makes no sense. Maybe someday someone will dive and at least try to find it. The other part of it is the failure of law enforcement on both sides of the river to truly investigate. That makes no sense. There are certainly answers....but nobody tried hard enough to get those answers. This case was eminently solvable....but nobody bothered. Tragic as hell.

Not surprising though. I have found from personal experience...that the police everywhere really pick and choose to which cases they are going to put great effort in. Depends on how much the public wants things solved and especially back in the day, the status of the victims as I'm sure you know. Long story short I had a family friend who worked on the force and said..That it blows her mind how little effort they put into some cases and others they don't sleep trying to solve them. 🙄 🤔

This tale sure pulled at the heart strings for me. That poor family. It was as though no one cared. The police were uninterested in investigating properly, especially once the location of the car was determined, Donald was unconcerned for obvious reasons, and how sad no one claimed the 2 girls remains. One would think there'd be other family - siblings of the parents, grandparents, someone. Such a sad story. But as always, you told it so beautifully. Thank you, Oddie!

You have to pay to collect ashes. You have to pay for the actual cremation and the storage. My sister died two weeks ago and was cremated that’s how I found out Maybe that’s why no one claimed them was because they didn’t want to pay for it? I don’t know tbh. I’m from Portland and the Willamette as well as the Columbia River’s (especially near The Gorge) have very swift currents and the Colombia Hood River Gorge can have extremely choppy water. I think for the danger it would be for a car that would be pointless to bring up and probably offer no clues at this point would be fruitless. It’s extremely expensive to recover vehicles and any suspects are long gone or soon to be. My mom was 18 in 1961 and she will be 80 next year. To solve curiosity and close this case they have probably a good idea about is not cost efficient. You put $ in cold cases you have a more pressing need to solve.

They pulled up the Ford Mustang that held Tim Robinson's body in it for about 18 years that had gone off the Willamette river bridge. He was just a skeleton still in his seatbelt..what happened to him? Could have just drove off the bridge.. Wouldn't there have been damage to the bridge back then, and not know why? Many cars, and people go missing in the drink.

Oddie, I totally agree with everything you said. The authorities knew where the vehicle was located. Why didn't they do something?? Why did they just let it sit under the water? You are absolutely right, if the family was important people, they would have drained the river and raised the car the instant they knew where it was. Good to hear your voice again. Take care.
@coyohti
@coyohti 2 жыл бұрын
Drain the Columbia River? They were lucky to be able to lower the water level. The Columbia is a very large river with a great deal of ship traffic as well as an area of critical wildlife conservation such as salmon spawning grounds. It's already severely compromised and certainly "draining" it, if that's even possible, would be devastating. I don't know much about diving but it seems like the Columbia, with such a vast volume of water moving through it, would be challenging at best. Taking sidescan sonar around the area first would make more sense. The Columbia could have moved that car down river quite a ways in the years since it was knocked loose. It would be interesting to hear the opinion of Adventures With Purpose, who specializes in that sort of thing, as to the feasibility of such a search and recovery project.

Wonderful work as usual Sir Od ! Many a dark and foggy night ive driven down the Gorge towards the Locks, thinking i might see the ghost car of this family careening off the cliffs into those dark waters. Years ago i lived in Arlington Oregon, (Hometown of "Doc" Severenson, bandleader on The Johnny Carson Show) I was building Grain Silos right on the banks of the Columbia River. Its a wide, very fast, powerful and dangerous river. Insanely high and sustained winds are common. Hood River is a windsurfing mecca. 60 mph winds are recorded often. There are also some of the worlds largest Sturgeon in that water. Some over 20 feet long. Personally, with the power of the current, i dont believe that car could have stayed put. Driving into the Gorge from East to West is one of my favorite drives. Always stopping at the Umatilla Reservations Tribal Fish Market to purchase the best smoked Salmon on Earth. Its truly a mysterious and beautiful place. Frequent UFOs and Cryptid creatures are often seen there. The Gorge leads to Portland of course, one of the former most beautiful Cities ive ever seen. Sadly, that is no longer true. Thank you for sending me on a trip down memory lane !

Another fantastic video, Oddie! My thinking here is that I don't think Donald Martin is necessarily involved, partly because given that he was stationed with the Navy in New York at the time, I don't think he could have necessarily skipped town long enough to go all the way to the west coast, kill his family at a time when they were on a road trip, and then dump the car with the bodies in the river, lake or wherever it was exactly that investigators believed the car to have gone over a cliff, not without having his absence be noticed, which would have led him to be declared AWOL. Also, with the gun, it does come of as suspicious that it showed up at the location of the abandoned Chevrolet, but I don't know that this ties Donald Martin to the family's disappearance, as the whereabouts of the stolen items does not seem to have been reported. We know that he was fired for having stolen for his work, but beyond that, I don't think there's much clarity there. It's possible that his parents confiscated the stolen items, but if so, it leads to the question of why none of it (or specifically the gun) was ultimately returned. I also don't think it's likely that Donald Martin would have had the gun with him at his post, because from what I understand, I don't think military personnel are allowed weapons not issued to them by the service, particularly if the weapon in question has been reported as stolen, with the serial number still clearly on it. The lack of follow-through in the investigation is also incredibly annoying. Why did the police never follow up on the blood traces on the gun? Why were the lake and river not thoroughly dredged? So many unanswered questions.

I grew up in the Columbia River Gorge 6 miles from Cascade Locks. It's not unheard of for a car to go into the river in our area but only in certain spots because on both sides of the river there are RR tracks between the river and the road. The river is very deep at Cascade Locks and it's right before the Bonneville Dam. This would be a VERY difficult area to search for a vehicle. The Columbia is a HUGE river, its deep and a can be a dangerous area to search. What makes no sense to me is how the body found near Camas could have gotten past the Dam and another 35 ish miles downriver. I mean it would have to go through the spillway and I can't imagine there would be much of a body to recover. This really is kind of a mystery.

This is a very interesting story to me. I live in the same neighborhood and went to the same high school. I’m a sixth generation Oregonian, and after watching this video, I have a few phone calls to make to some family members. I have no idea how I’ve never heard of this story.

As to the gun, it could be that when the son went in the Navy he left it at home. In fact he may have had to. If so, the father could have taken it on the trip for protection and lost it in a struggle, possibly with the two car thieves.

This was my thought as well. It’s likely they would want to have protection if heading into forested areas there. Plenty of large critters in the area who could be pretty hungry in the winter.

Or maybe the dad was in a problem with someone (like those 2 men) like had a debt or something. And he pretended to go on a short trip with his family to not make anyone suspicious and took the gun as protection but then those men still managed to murder the family. Okay this is just my imagination, I still think it was maybe an accident as according to a podcast the dad didn't like to drive where those cliffs are when it becomes dark, so maybe he became nervous and drove down the cliff and specially after watching Adventures with purpose it seems to be a very common accident.

I am from Puerto Rico, and in my hometown, in early 70's or late 60's a vendor of a liqueur brand disappeared with lots of cash. He was last seen collecting his boss money at a rural store. About 30 years later, he, his car and the money were found at the bottom of a lake. In my hometown.

Very interesting, just as a side note the car advertised at 9:30 a Renault Dauphine with road hugging stability, was the car that my brother managed to roll several times over when a man reversed out of his drive into my brother. It ended up over 550 ft down the road. I passed it going home but it was in such a state I never recognised it, it looked like it had been in a crusher. Fortunately somehow my brother got out and was sat on a wall when the police and fire brigade arrived. He miraculously had no physical injuries but never quit got over the accident as he suffered from a mental breakdown. Thought it may interest you.

I absolutely love all your stories . I look forward to them all the time. You have a soothing way about how you tell it no matter how bad the story actually is. As for the son of this story. It’s definitely Weird. If he was gay he why would he move to Hawaii and have a family anyway? I mean without his family or anyone judging him he could have continued that lifestyle. I guess it was the era . It’s sad because people still do the same thing today. I think he did it . Every one who has heard this story knows he did it. I’m sorry I call it as I see or hear it in this case. Thank you for releasing more from your other channel. I listened to two more last night. I live near the Columbia River Gorge. The river is very deep and wide. It's massive. It would be an absolute huge undertaking to search it. Also another awesome close to home vintage "crime" video. I've also been to just about of all those locations/towns. Cascade Locks is a favorite stop along our trip routes. Such a quaint town to stop and have lunch in. The Ale house has great burgers. I suspect you are right that there was foul play. Perhaps those men decided to rob them and someone got killed then they figured in for a penny in for a pound and killed everyone. I listened to this one this morning while sipping my hot coffee and making hot pepper ristras from the garden we had to empty out due to the frost coming. It made the work go faster. Again keep doing these amazing videos. I love listening to your narrations. You should look up vintage crime in Tri Cities Washington where I'm from and see if there is anything interesting here. Have a lovely day!

I read a great book on this case. Echo of Distant Water by JB Fisher. Super well researched and presented. The authors final theory makes the most sense to me. The dive team Adventures with purpose tried to locate the car but its just too old a case to have any evidence left. Awfully sad case. Those girls deserved a full life not such a horrific death.

Have you ever seen the channel " Adventures with a Purpose " ?? They are a small group of people that travel around trying to locate missing loved ones, that might be under water. ( They're scuba divers & they have sonar equipment ). They have found lots of missing loved ones thats vehicle has been underwater for even some years. They too have problems with the " authorities " at times. I think the authorities have " little big man syndrome " & don't like someone else coming in & possibly getting credit for doing something they can't or will not do. They do not charge for this service & run on donations. Thank you for the stories you bring to life again !!

The Columbia is the 2nd largest river in the USA and it’s in a gorge. The water is fast and deep so recovery would be dangerous and difficult! Once the vehicle was snagged they would have known where to look, but prior to that it would have been impossible. If it was dislodged then it could easily have been dragged further down by the current. It really is an awe inspiring, beautiful and massive river!

The Columbia river is extremely deep and torrential especially in winter with waves and currents as it feeds directly into the ocean. I’m not surprised they don’t want to send anyone down there to search for the car
