Great reaction. One of the reasons this gets called the modern Pride and Prejudice, other than the story structure, is also because Colin Firth actually plays Darcy in the BBC 1995 miniseries. And he's brilliant at it! It was so popular that it became a kind of running gag in his career for many years after. He was always in movies either playing a character literally named Darcy, or showing the same kind of behaviours.

‘All By Myself’ in ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ is such a Mood.

GOOD EYE! This movie IS based on Pride and Prejudice! While Bridget doesn't need to marry for financial reasons, the social pressure to have a man in her life is relentless. In both stories the mothers are ridiculous, and the fathers are both passive. The first meeting between the characters leaves a bad first impression. Both of them become prideful and prejudiced towards the other. (Trivia point: In Austen's early version of the book its title was "First Impressions") Wickham romances Elizabeth and tells her Darcy ruined him financially, Cleaver tells Bridge the fiancé story. And my favorite detail; just when Bridget and Elizabeth thoroughly despise Darcy, both men tell the women that they actually do like them. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. I've probably seen nearly every film and television performance, including the BBC 6 hour series that stars Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy! Bridget Jones Diary is 💯 a riff of Pride and Prejudice.

Yeah I was in my late teens early twenties in this era and 136 was definitely considered FAT. Tits were also out of fashion, actually. Story time for anyone interested (no obligation to read on): I was 21. Very inexperienced and I think I was around 190 at the time. Already had my high school crush come out as gay and that whole journey we all went on in the late 90s. Sadly, for me, I didn’t get the supportive friend, but one who teased me relentlessly for my weight and took out his own troubles by knocking me down. Being overweight was something I absolutely hated about myself. So there I am, 21, trying to reinvent myself as an “adult.” Make better friends, get in the college play, learn to drink Scotch. And learn to be ok with being FAT. And I fall madly in love with a college classmate. You know how it is at that age. My god! There’s never been anyone like him! He’s bright, he’s funny, he knows how to juggle! (Am I alone there? It was sexy as hell and I won’t apologize for swooning). He and I struck up a friendship. He was dating a lovely tall thin intelligent woman, but I was raised on 90s romcoms so I knew it was just a matter of time until he realized I (the main character, clearly) was the right girl. I’d give a lot to go back in time, flip him off, and befriend her. Anyway, she cheated on him, I swooped in as his best friend. We drove around all day listening to Pink Floyd while he lamented so poetically on his broken heart. Now, keep in mind, I thought I’d been very secretive and that my adoration was unknown to him. To give my younger self credit, I was more concerned with cheering him up than anything else. We wound up at an impromptu dinner at the home of an academic hermit we knew. He’d built his house with his own hands in the woods outside of town, he rolled his own cigarettes, and always had really good wine. So we wound up there and he drew out what had happened. My crush went on about how wonderful I was to have dropped everything and distract him from his heartache of being cheated on. Finally, the hermit said, pointing knowingly at this young man and myself, “Why aren’t the two of you an item?” I blushed (honestly), and the young man said, “She and I know exactly how we feel about each other.” Now. Remember. I’m in LUV with this young man. The girlfriend has revealed herself as a cheater, he and I have had a strange poetic day together, and now we’re in the woods with bellies full of wine and Leonard Cohen on the record player. I said, “That’s not true. I have no idea how you feel about me.” And he leaned over the handmade table and said, “I could live with you for the rest of my life. But I’m only sexually attracted to skinny girls.” I don’t like all the decisions and ambitions younger me chose, … but, my god, she didn’t deserve THAT. Anyway, you can guess why I loved this film so much.

@@prayingbanshee I’d love to tell you that he realized his mistake and grew to be a better person, or that I suddenly fathomed my own worth and walked out of his life. But no. I followed him around for another five years or so. I paid his bills for over half a year so he could write. Then I lost my job that summer and, even though he was then making good money at that point (not from writing) he did not return the favor. In the end, I reconnected with an old friend from high school and he started sleeping with her. I told him how much that hurt me, that he’d go after my friend that way (she also knew how I felt about him). He told me I didn’t have the right to keep him from being happy. Our “friendship” fell apart after that and I went through several months of drinking too much. Life isn’t a movie, sadly.

The days and era of when movies were not afraid of not being politically correct and portraying what life can genuinely be like whilst in the genre of comedy. I saw this so many times at the time as did many, this is really what endeared Rene Zellweger to the masses beyond the US

This was so fun! Love how one of you was already a fan and the other hadn't seen it. Makes for a fun dynamic. And it's my favourite thing watching Americans react to British stuff. Hot Fuzz is a popular reaction film on KZbin. Some of my favourite British/British set films are Rocketman, The Prestige, Pride and Prejudice, Death At A Funeral (the original UK version), V For Vendetta, Billy Elliot, Austenland, 1917, Kingsman, Belle, The King's Speech, Atonement etc Any of them would make for a good reaction! :)

Renee Zellweger’s weight naturally sits around 100-110 lbs. she’s super petite. The press was super obsessed with it during press for this movie. They also thought she had an eating disorder during Chicago because (surprise, surprise) training for intense dance sequences makes one muscular. So she looked even more lean. 🙄
