Dramatic footage has emerged from the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine a year ago. TV cameraman Serhiy Kylymnyk was using amateur equipment to document how Russian troops were attacking his town when a tank opened fire on the window he was filming from.

If I remember correctly this actually happened because when you're using your phone recording something it gives off a signature in IR, so in terms of what the gunner was seeing(if he was using optics that are IR) than all he'd see is an IR signature aiming at the tank. It would look similar to that of an IR anti-tank weapon aiming at the tank. This is why if you're in a war zone you shouldn't point your phones camera directly at a tank that is looking at you, unless you wanna get mistaken for an enemy that's trying to blow up said tank with AT weaponry.

Yes its the auto-focus, if you use a normal camera with a fixed or manual adjust lense you'd be fine (unless of course they happened to spot you visually). In some cases the more advanced tanks even have a setting where the gun will automatically point right to the area an IR signal was detected, so the gunner or commander gets a warning and basically just has to fire the gun all in a matter of seconds.

@@aerocock_sas_1000w я тебе как бывший командир танка скажу одну вещь которую только танкисты знают. я стрелял из танка когда срочку служил 2 года не через прицел даже на дальность 700 ,стрелял из пулемёта просто через триплекс и попадал по движущейся мишени которая ехала со скоростью 40 км /ч . а из пушки пробовал стрелять через триплекс га дальность около километра или чуть больше. просто дурачились так потому ,что на только были профи , раньше буквально неделями месяцами на танках стрельбы учения и кащарму видел раз в месяц на три дня и то не каждый месяц.. так что тот танкис который шмальнул на вскидку он профи и понимал ,что времени целиться просто нет... возможно в колонну прицеливается кто то из окна гранатомётом или птуром! танкист всё правильно сделал!!!

Cameras can be mistaken for targeting equipment, recce/recon equipment, or even weapons (in the case of studio-style cameras). Many even use the same tech as weapons/targeting equipment and may give off similar signals and all, which makes you a target. The TV cameraman should be surprised if the tank DIDN'T shoot at him than he is that the tank shot at him. Tanks drivers, shooters and commanders have poor visibility. And they won't hang around to check if you're a cameraman or an enemy fighter even if they did. It's better you're dead than they are dead. A similar incident happened a few years ago when an Israeli tank fired at and killed a journalist that had been videoing them with a camera. Stay safe and use your head next time.

It's not tge reflection per se but it does pick up on the sensors much the same way an atgm sight would. The issue is double if your device emits light to measure range for focal length.

So if you put the playback speed on the slowest setting and watch the shot, you can see that the projectile initially hit close to the small orange looking house (or whatever that was) on the lower right of the screen. But debris from the projectile struck the building that the camera guy was in. They weren't aiming at the camera guy. If they had been he would've been dead.

A more realistic thing to say would be that there are a lot more photos, videos and publicly available texts of all kinds from this war than previous wars. They are not history writing, though, because they often lack context, and mostly analysis and verification. They also contain a log of propaganda. They will not become history books that people learn from. At best they can become (and undoubtedly will come) source material for history writing, if someone studies them and accept them as such. Sayings can be as misleading as they can helpful in understanding things. History was never written only by the victors. Sometimes it pretty much was, but in many cases the opposite view has gained a lot of visibility and acceptance, even dominance over the view of the victor. Anyway, what you bring up is an interesting and influential phenomenon. People that are not participating the war can hear and see more from it than ever before.

From long distance a camera can look like a sighting device for an ATGM or be mistaken for many things. In an active war zone dont be up in buildings recording tanks, for your own safety. At a minimum you could be mistaken as a spotter for other weapon systems.

Simple explanation: Modern cameras use infrared lasers to auto-focus. ATGM platforms use the same infrared lasers to "lock on". Most modern tanks have sensors that detect said laser. In the video: The driver stopped when the tank detected a laser. The gunner turned the turret to aim the gun at the location of the laser's source, took a few seconds to identify whether it was a civilian with a camera or not, then fired. During an intense battle, the gunner will likely not pause to check the target so don't be pointing your camera at tanks.

None of the war in Iraq was in my name I never went there when I was a soldier due to me not believing their narrative. I served 9 months in prison and got discharged lost my job and ruined any prospects of future jobs because I got a dishonourable discharge. People in my regiment planted drugs in my room and I got charged with that. The only place I did a tour of was N-Ireland before that came about it was George Galloway which made me see sense.

I'm not 100% sure if this is true but it sounds legit: Some cameras use infrared light to help focus, some use even laser diodes. In this case tank can detect and find this source of light and defend itself automatically. Aiming at tank with camera can be risky.
