I see your point with Reiner saying "No I don't wanna die!" in the dub being great, but I'd interpreted the simple "Wait!" and a sort of "Wait guys what are you doing?!", like he's talking to his comrades, which I think holds a lot more impact taking Reiner's Soldier/Warrior complex into account.
@TheMageOfVoid6 ай бұрын
It was also Marco's reaction to being killed/left to die by him. It was something like 'Wait! We haven't even tried to talk this out yet!', and just as Marco didn't get the chance to properly talk things out, Reiner doesn't get the chance to finish speaking in this scene either.

Not sure if someone has said it before, but when war chief is mentioned, my thoughts are that is how Marley dictates the Eldians under their command. They are giving them more primal/less modern titles like war-chief because they look down on them. That's why Zeke isn't getting 'General', but 'war chief'.
@hithedragon78426 ай бұрын
Yeah, I kind of got that impression. It separates them from the Marleyan ranks, and fits with the 'Warrior' theming too.
@xeroprotagonist6 ай бұрын
I think it'd make sense as a traditional Eldian title that they've used for the leader of the titan shifters in combat for ages, maybe since the days of King Fritz. The titan shifters have been in existence as a combat unit for 2000 years with a largely fixed unit composition, it makes sense that any terms relating to their organizational structure should be archaic in the extreme.
@hithedragon78426 ай бұрын
@@xeroprotagonist that also makes a lot of sense
@preparetocrab67236 ай бұрын
I also see his title as limiting his authority in a way, as it implies that he’s only a Chief during war and not any other time
@JulieDeponte6 ай бұрын
We have here another ritual of social interaction. The symbolic language perpetuates in yet another way the discrimination against the Eldians and their stigmatization in all systems of society. Stigma is the key characteristic of all Eldians since they are phylogenetically set apart from all other human beings. The tone of the discrimination that we see hints at the inferiority complex deeply ingrained in all societies that did not just witness the superior force that only the Eldians have access to but were victimized by it. But it also highlights the disdain all people feel about the specific manifestation of the Eldian superiority which is destructive and not constructive in "nature". The Eldians are the manifestation of the destructive force "within" that threatens the Ego, its relationships and civilization itself. This destructive force will be considered by all civilizations to be of a primitive kind, a vestige of less civilized times, which is symbolically invoked by calling the Eldians, who manifest that force in the military, by antiquated terms. Which is fitting given the role of the military as a more shackled manifestation of the - potentially - same destructive force.

I think zekes design changes highlight my favourite thing about animation and just art in general with that being perception allowing design change. This is final boss zeke and his design reflects that, his conversation with that survey member is more 'normal' and simple so his face isn't exaggerated to be scary and threatening outside of just being the beast Titan and his more standerd design with red eyes is how he's typically seen as a war machine at work
@simonholmes8416 ай бұрын
Yeah, and I think all three designs add to his mystique. The conversation with the Beast Titan is showing that there is a human in there. We're used to seeing big human bodies mindlessly attacking, but the calm, almost friendly demeanor of the Beast is unsettling in a new way. Then as the final boss, he's even more frightening, knowing that he can be calm, deliberate, and empathetic.

My head cannon for both sides using the exact same name for the Titan shifters is that it's Armin narrating from a historical standpoint. The folks from Paradis would have no idea what any of them are called by default. So to keep his story consistent he uses the same title throughout. Also, Eren very likely used the term monkey after he heard Reiner and Bertholdt use it, when reporting back to Erwin and Levi. Levi being Levi just used it regardless if he knew what it actually meant. But it also fits in my earlier statement; it being Armin storytelling.
@despayeeto_59366 ай бұрын
I'm fairly sure that Levi saying "Monkey" is just a mistranslation, since I don't hear him saying "Saru" (The Japanese word for monkey) in the actual dialogue.

I actually think the japanese "mate", so "wait", is way more fitting as it shows not so much the fear of Rainer but more the fact that Rainer is completely stunned about this situation. It reminds me of Porco screaming "can't you see I'm a titan?" while being attacked by the scouts - a pure expression of surprise and shock.

To give people another idea in terms of time in manga vs what we think time is: It took nearly two hundred chapters to complete the story (war arc starts at 516). In our world it took 2 1/2 to 3 years to get through. In their time. It lasted a total of two days. So the freeze frame in thought is a real deal. While literally no time at all passes in their world, in ours it took years. Just giving another example of what you thoroughly explained.

Thinking about where you were talking about Reiner deciding to commit to attacking the horses or going after Eren. To me I interpret it as Reiner thinking that Eren is too much of a wild card/unpredictable force. As you pointed out, Eren suddenly used the coordinate and learnt hardening fast, Reiner probably doesn't want to allow Eren to pull another insane trick out of nowhere again so decides to keep him occupied. Also, Reiner knows Eren, and knows that Eren is definately unpredictable and has a knack for suddenly going off the rails. Such as the nickname of "Reckless idiot" from when they were taking on Annie in ep 17. Basically he doesn't know what Eren will pull next and doesn't want to give the chance to find out Anyway, I love this series can't wait to see the rest of this arc!
@camaronpotts42146 ай бұрын
With the dub's line for eren saying "you stole it" conflicting with the music, I think it can kind of serve to show that, while eren has changed and grown, he's still emotional at his core and even though he's far more controlled that emotion still bleeds through a little. I think that ties quite nicely into the final season as well since, despite eren being very controlled throughout, in the end he pretty much admits that the rumbling was him acting out of emotion
@lavistalimited47476 ай бұрын
I remember when the dub came out for this episode, people REALLY didn't like Reiner's last line of "No, I don't wanna die!" as it contrasted his later attempt at suicide but for me, I feel like it fits perfectly. What people tend to forget is that Reiner is, by all accounts, still a teenager at this point. A war hardened teenager as he helped take down nations at a young age with Marley, but a teenager nonetheless. At that age, especially if you've gone through the mental and emotional hell that Reiner has gone through with his split personality, you're not going to have all your emotions in check. So despite being focused on capturing Eren, and maybe even accepting that he could die during the mission, it makes complete sense that he would fear for his life when put in a situation where he could reasonably assume that he was going to die. When he was later captured, he seemed more composed despite being in an arguably worse position. I would personally chalk this up to Reiner having more time to process what just happened and accept that he's more than likely going to die by the hands of the Scouts and if it wasn't for Zeke and Pieck saving him, I wouldn't put it past Hange to continue beheading him once she saw Mikasa's smoke signal. Whereas here he's been hit by explosive attacks that immediately cut off his vision, explosives that Reiner would have no reason to assume that the Scouts would have. Idk if I was in Reiner's position, and was bombarded with explosion after explosion on the nape of my Titan when before I assumed I wouldn't be hurt due to the knowledge of the Scouts only having blades when I last fought them, I'd be rattled to say the least. You'd go from "With my armor, they can't do anything to me." to "What are they hitting me with and why does it hurt so much?"

Another thing about the titans having the same name, Eldians and Marleyans don't speak the same language.
