i am someone who is on the Autism spectrum and have multiple mental health diagnosis as well. i have multiple friends on the spectrum and also spend lots of time in the special education classroom at school voluntarily and help out with other students who have intelectual disabilities and/or physical disabilities.. this story was gut wrenching and made me cry so much just imagining that to people who are in my community was heartbreaking. God bless them and their families😢😭💗

This was absolutely a case of fowl play. Some awful people decided to target them, likely due to their mental abilities, and forced them to be in that area. Afterwards, effects of the cold and panic would cause illogical choices. The others were absolutely trying to find help.

The fact that the father is the one who found his son has to be the most heartbreaking part of this. No parent should ever have to bury their child. It’s even harder yet when they’re the ones who find their deceased children. I can’t even begin to imagine the mental and emotional hell that caused.

I’ve driven through that canyon. I can’t disagree with you because of what I’ve seen. My friends car broke down and while we were waiting for a tow truck to bring her some gas, we saw headlights coming. And because we could even start the car, the car we thought we saw was headed straight for us. Then just as the car got close enough it disappeared.

Drew Beason and Tony Wright know more about this case than anyone alive. If you guys want a real actual detailed breakdown of the case that is full of facts and evidence, you should check out either one of them on KZbin. Beason interviews Wright for one show. You'll find out more about what actual happened on that one show than on any true crime channel in existence. Both have also written books on the case.
@JillianAlmeida
@JillianAlmeida 6 күн бұрын
@@Jack123-n7q I’ve read both books and both have some good points and both make some interesting assumptions. As I said since I have been able to gather info from an investigator on the original case I have a good grasp of what happened and what the police believe happened. It’s always interesting to hear other view points and see what other ideas people come up with on what might have happened to them but I am so grateful for our friend who took the time to tell me all about this case. He jokes he had to fill me in while he could still do it since he is getting up in the years (still sharp as a tack but he likes to joke). But again he is grateful for each piece of media that comes out about this case because there is always the possibility that someone somewhere will have new info.

@ Amanda, while I understand the validity of your question- and not answering it will probably lead you to say I am lying- I don’t feel comfortable saying names in comments on KZbin. Since this involves law enforcement and such it wouldn’t seem my place to name him. I apologize for being unable to provide the information but again personal information such as names and places just don’t belong in a public forum such as KZbin.

@yuba5 there is always the possibility of foul play. Since there is no way to identify CoD on the boys that were found and Gary was never found at all you can not rule anything out. There are certainly suspicious circumstances surrounding the events of that night that will probably never be explained. His hope is that some explanation can be found to provide some closure to the families and that that the remaining boy can be found. He does not believe that Gary had anything to do with the deaths of the other boys and that he too perished in the events of the night just hasn’t been found yet.

If I had to guess, Gary probably realized how bad of shape Ted was in, rushed to get him wrapped up as well as he could, fed him, swapped their shoes, and ran back out to navigate and find help on his own, probably assuring he'd be back and to just stay warm. Ted was probably so sick he couldn't even grasp the passing of time properly as he suffered, let alone get up and take care of himself while he waited for his friend to return. Realistically Gary probably got lost and succumbed to the wilderness, especially if he was experiencing hallucinations that would probably lead him around completely randomly given the state of panic and desperation his mind would be in, hoping something he heard or saw or felt was real and not just in his head.
@lizard_wizard901
@lizard_wizard901 Күн бұрын
This is probably a darker turn to that story, but what if Gary had a schizophrenic episode and something convinced him to leave Ted? Like what if Gary thought the best thing to do was to leave Ted and try and take care of himself. Or worse yet- Gary was the mastermind behind the entire thing and the reason why his remains were never found is because he doomed his friend group, then fled the crime scene? (again, this is all speculation that just came to mind)
@ClarkKenttheBoss
@ClarkKenttheBoss Күн бұрын
@@lizard_wizard901 Have you read the case files? This theory is so off-based. Why would Gary be the mastermind of his friends' disappearance? Makes no sense. What's his motive? Also, how on earth could one slim man overtake 4 grown men with no weapon??? (Gary owned no weapon). He wanted to play in the basketball tournament the next day as bad as anybody, and he would've never jeopardized his chance to play. He was very caring toward his friends and protected them with a passion. Gary enjoyed spending time with his friends so much; the four men were his best friends. Gary was the closest to Ted and Jackie; in fact, Gary had known Ted for years as they were neighbors and lived right down the street from each other. Gary was a human being; accusing a missing victim of murder with no proof (and lots of evidence against that theory) is slander. People with schizophrenia aren't superhuman psycho murderers like Hollywood has led people to believe. Gary's schizophrenia could not have caused the disappearance. I implore you to think this theory through. How could one man force 4 others to drive 2 hours in the wrong direction at an elevation of 4500 ft to a desolate road that he has never been before and then somehow force the 4 out of the car to run into the freezing woods, and then he himself runs into the woods as well, getting hypothermia along with them? Gary Mathias perished up in the mountains like his friends. I would suggest you read the case files. The police currently regard this case as a homicide. Read Mr. Sheriff Wendall Anderson's police file. You can find it at yuba county's official website. Or watch the Missing Enigma's videos, he shows the file in the video in part 2 of his yuba county five videos. This case is not human error; Gary Mathias is believed to be a victim of foul play.
@Lanoira13
@Lanoira13 Күн бұрын
@lizard_wizard901 The choice of wording on that latter half is pretty offensive and it's extremely unlikely in my opinion. First of all calling him the "mastermind" insinuates he was evil (for no reason other than his disorder) and that this was some intentional murder plot orchestrated by him, which there's no evidence for and evidence against. It's not impossible he could've been the catalyst, that something could've happened and he ran off and they went looking for him. But they weren't a little off track, they were miles off course. And there weren't really treatments for schizophrenia at the time, so Gary would be used to managing his symptoms completely unmedicated. In the car on the way to a game, those symptoms would probably be pretty manageable, he might've needed to stop for air and space, but that wouldn't explain them being so far off track either. But upon thinking about it I think you might be right about the first part. Gary was a serviceman. He saw the food supply, he clearly looked around the cabin, he'd know this wasn't some random abandoned place. His friend has frostbite and is freezing. With a clear head, even if he was panicking, it'd be fair to expect he would know the best course of action would be to stay at the cabin, look around for a way to warm the place up, and take care of himself and the one sickly friend he found. He should have reasonable known his chances going out there weren't good, and Ted's chances would be worse if he never came back. BUT HIS FRIENDS WERE OUT THERE. That will seriously mess with your head. He would've already been a mess trying to deal with all of this, if his brain was freaking out trying to convince him to go find his friends, go get help, it's very plausible he would listen to his instincts, probably telling Ted and himself that he'll be fast, he's just gonna do a quick little search, just in case... And then he kept going and going until the couldn't see the cabin. No way to know if he even tried to find his way back or if he realized how fucked he was and just kept going. His remains probably weren't found because who knows, with his experience and drive in that moment, he might've made it to the other side of the mountain and ran off a cliff. If he had been found a part of him since, they probably would've assumed it was a hiker or something.

@@Lanoira13 Thanks for defending Gary, but there were actually treatment and medication for Schizophrenia back in 1970s. When the disappearance happened, Gary had been on a stable medication regimen for almost 3 years. The police do not believe he was a catalyst in any way.
@Lanoira13
@Lanoira13 15 сағат бұрын
@@ClarkKenttheBoss Ooooooh, I thought the disappearance happened in the 50s or so, and from what I read meds wouldn't come out until the late 60s I think? It was a 5 days ago now that I looked it up, so I could be misremembering.

I am a wfr (wilderness first responder) and I’ve had to deal with hypothermia and learn a lot about it. It is interesting how many people underestimate the symptoms of hypothermia. It’s not just being very very cold. Your brain cannot function and you do some of the craziest things. Like walk away from a hot fire. Sit down in the fetal position instead of trying to warm up. And even not zipping up your coat.

I've been obsessed with this case for awhile and was hoping you'd cover it at some point. I feel really emotional about this case bc I probably would have been in their group, had I been born in that time and place, due to my mental illness and disabilities. But also the deep mystery surrounding what happened to them and what ultimately happened to Gary Mathias has me always coming back to it and considering the possibilities of what could have happened. I think the "bully" theory or the fact that the driver that reported seeing their car actually had something to do with it, are the most plausible theories.

Some people just come from really sheltered families lol. I have an aunt in Waco but with all the times I visited her, I never knew about the Branch Davidian cult until my senior year of college. None of the adults ever mentioned it and I had no reason to find out about it otherwise until, of all things, it was mentioned in the movie "Midsommar" and I googled it from there

Finding anything that a person has personal connections to can always be triggering. There is a picture of a girl smiling that comes up now and then. I have knowledge about what happened and every time I see that beautiful smile my mind breaks for awhile. Horrible one of these men is your uncle. The picture may have been shocking but hopefully shining light on their story will help figure the truth out. Peace and love

Theory! The red pickup might have targeted the group, forcing them into the forest. The call for help from the other car might have scared the group and influenced the group to go further on foot to lose the ones chasing them. They ended up at the cabin and some of them would've gone to try and find help. Gary would've shown how to open the cans and went to find help afterwards(taking the boots instead of his tennis shoes to try to fight the weather), leaving the 1 guy in the cabin alone but due to panic/hypothermia he didn't remember how to open the cans leading to him being starved or he would have tried to keep rationing, maybe even keeping most cans closed for if the others did come back and eventually he died as well

More info on the paradoxical undressing: your body constricts (narrows) your blood vessels that are close to your skin surface when you are cold because your circulating blood that comes from the heart also carries heat because your core is typically warmest. By narrowing your blood vessels, blood flow is decreased near the surface of your skin so less heat is lost to the environment. This constriction is caused by smooth muscles (these are involuntary so your body controls them without you thinking). Well over time like with skeletal muscles, they tire out. When the muscles constricting these blood vessels no longer have energy to to stay constricted, they give out causing sudden vasodilation. This vasodilation cause blood vessels close to the skin to suddenly widen and blood previously directed to your core to rush near the skin. Since suddenly there’s a rush of heat near the surface of your skin and heat naturally wants to move to areas of less heat, the heat from your body suddenly rushes into the environment through convection. This sudden rush of heat near your skin and it transferring to the environment gives the illusion of overheating. This and delirium causes people to remove their clothes. Also, your body prioritizes keeping your essential organs and brain at proper temperatures over limbs. So another thing that happens is as your body’s remaining heat supply is used up, the brain can leave the range of temperatures needed for it to function. This causes the delirium and damage. Damage to the hypothalamus (part of brain that regulates temperature) can also cause paradoxical undressing. Source: I’m currently studying biology in college and recently took a class that taught about adaptations to extreme hot and cold in different species

Hey Kris! Loving the true crime stuff lately 🤍 a video suggestion: there was a 3 year old kid who vanished from my hometown of Slave Lake, Alberta, in the 80's named Jeffery Dupres. His disappearance was suspicious and happened during wildfire season so went somewhat un-investigsted due to to lack of resources. There's been speculation that he was kidnapped and could still be alive, some 40 years later. His mother, who is still alive, has been recently making one final push to find out what happened to her son. Would love to see you cover this story!
