I was taught (in the Baltimore Catechism) that we aren't supposed to picture ourselves in scenarios that would test our Faith, because that would make us feel over confident in ourselves and then when we are actually placed in those situations, reality will hit us and we'll shrink back, because our confidence was in ourselves. That's why, whenever I start to imagine myself facing martyrdom, I push the thought out of my mind with the prayer, "Lord, give me the courage to be able to face that torture/death, but don't let me imagine that I have that courage."

Reminds me of Peter's overconfidence in saying that he would never betray the Lord and yet He did as Jesus foretold to him, by denying him three times before the rooster would cry two times. We should never assume any ability apart from God to do what's right, but in humility pray for the strength to overcome when dire times arise.

Mental prayer involving placing oneself in the mysteries of the Rosary has been very helpful to me. Not to focus on oneself, but being in the situation makes it Very Real, as Father said. Try it. It may be of great benefit.

I needed to hear this! I’ve been struggling lately with meditation because I don’t “get” what other people “get”, I needed to be reminded that that doesn’t mean I’m missing it, it just might mean that God is telling me something different than what He tells others. Also-I’m the one guilty of buying every book that I hear recommended 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 I do read them though!

I admit that i spend too much time on the computer, but if I gave it up, I just sleep 12 hours a day. I am not depressed, I simply sought the truth my whole life and now that I found it I could lose everything, but possess everything. I found the Truth...Him. I am content. I used to love gaming a lot, now it is something I (supposedly) do for fun. But I found peace.

Also most of my contemplation is done on the computer, just sitting and sometimes listening to music as white noise so I don't have to listen to that gosh dang garbage politics my parents talk about. "Mom and dad, It not that I don't believe in the constitution, but it will in time be a rag like others, only Holy Mother Church will last the time.

I wish contemplative meditation, Catholic style, was explained. My training in meditation is Zen - letting thoughts go and not attaching to them. The way Father is explaining it here, he describes Catholic meditation as actively thinking?

Catholic meditation is the main things: First, briefly put yourself in the presence of God. Second, tell Him you know you are unworthy. Third, ask Him to come into your heart and help you to pray anyway for the next 20 minutes, wherever he leads your thoughts. St pray this is what I got from the book "the way of mental prayer" by Lahodey.
