The Most Complex International Borders in the World

In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites.
I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland.
I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh.
This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!)
I finish off the video by looking at the island of Cyprus, which may look like a borderless island, but is in fact far from it!

I watched this video when it first came out in 2013 and have always wanted to visit Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog and yesterday, 15/06/2023, I finally got the chance to do that. The town is also surprisingly accessible, with the bus line 132 from either Breda or Tilburg (the Netherlands, a 40-minute ride away) and line 450 from Turnhout (Belgium). Unfortunately, it was for less than 30 mins because I had my flight from Schipol, over 2 hours away by public transport. Still, in that time, I managed to cross the Dutch-Belgian border around 10 times, sometimes not being fully aware as to which of the two countries I was located in and standing in front of a Dutch house with a lamp post claiming to be in Belgium, in front of a Belgian church full of Belgian flags. The people are also very friendly and speak perfect English and I can safely say that these were the best 30 minutes of my trip!

Nope. India has already given a large part of its enclaves to Bangladesh last years. And kept of some of Bangladeshis enclaves. The situation arose, when British partitioned Bengal along Religious lines ( this was simply to quell down the anti colonialism whose hotbed was Bengal). So what the clever British did was to simply divide the districts. Now districts do not have perfect staright borders. Add to the fact this area is also a iant swamp and get flooded every monsoon and some part of land gets lost or eroded away. Anyways most of the India Bangladesh is fenced, india fenced the border because when Islamist govt came in Bangladesh, that border became a major route for Pakiatani spies, Pakistani trained terrorists, and fake currency (which wrecked havoc on the economy). Anyways with a progressive govt at Bangladesh things are again looking up.

On the road you see all kinds of crosses stretching everywhere, with one side behind the crosses having a 'B' for Belgium and the other side has an 'NL' for the Netherlands, but of course this guy explained that. There's also a miniature version of the two cities inside of a little capsule and if you press a button, the miniature Baarle Hertog rises upwards and miniature Baarle Nassau sinks downwards.

Imagine if the Schengen Area didn't exist.... Guy who lives in a split-country house in Baarle: Time to make my breakfast. (Goes to the kitchen) Guard: Stop right there! I need your passport, your visa, and your ID to enter Belgium! Guy: Fine, fine. After breakfast.... Guy: I need to get to my front door. Can I pass? Guard: I need your passport, your visa, and your ID to enter the Netherlands. Guy: It's on the table. Guard: It's not in Belgium?! Alright you're not allowed back to the Netherlands.

@The Friend of Dinge: yet they managed quite well before Schengen existed, centuries before Schengen existed, there was no border control there and as far as I remember even before the entire EU I never had to show my passport going into Belgium. After Schengen yes I do t have to show a passport at .ost of the EU Borders but do have to show it much much more just about anywhere else within the country
