It’s not only a Japanese problem. An American as well, a country base in immigrants, not allowing other immigrants to move in, because they don#t want competition, and turned to hate by politics, led by the people causing the food and wage problems, the super rich, that don’t contribute for society. Japan racism has a different background, this is the inherited feeling of being superior to other countries/people. Even against Koreans that Japanese are genetically related to and Korea was 35 years under Japanese force, as a “colony”, see oppression and exploitation. It’s so easy to simplify racism, but it’s deep rooted in the old Japanese culture. Funny though is that most Japan anime’s worlds are often crowded with “foreigners” culture (most medieval European) and are loved for it. I think that there is hope for the Japanese youth, but is very important to see how this kind of Anime gives ground to the far right to mess around young kids. Edit: grammar.

This is a weird one. I feel like there’s not enough context to say how we’re meant to interpret their actions. It could be a Death Note or AOT situation. Where it’s meant to be a commentary on human nature (maybe the consumption of meat). If we’re meant to agree with the MC’s then the series is at best wildly tone deaf and at worst a cringy xenophobic self insert for the manga writer.

I disagree with it being left wing, right wing, that's putting Westernization on everything Japan has had a really hard time accepting foreigners to the point where even if you marry in you aren't considered Japanese, neither are your kids from what I've been told. This manga just feels like a heavy representation of what happens when Japan actually starts accepting foreigners. I think looking this much into something that doesn't directly involve the Western civilization and politics is ridiculous and only happening because of the recent presidential election. Also this is an inherently political manga in some aspects as it is focusing on class issues and the distribution of resources among people and aliens. That’s what politics studies the distribution of power within a society.

@@Bluedragon-sr2wz Actually a major force in Japan that's been advocating for more openness towards foreigners has historically been the Japanese Left more specifically the Japanese Communist Party, but also this story actually mirrors the experience of Zainaichi Koreans in Japan though technically brought to Japan as workers they are treated as outsiders and not even given citizenship because they're not ethnically Japanese. There's also the Okinawan and Ainu peoples indigenous to Japan but subject historically to discrimination for not being considered "Yamato". So he's actually not framing it in a western-centric way especially if you're familiar with Japanese postwar politics being heavily influenced by the United States, remember the Japanese constitution was written by Macarthur and many of Japan's current freedoms and systems were all created by the United States so Japan very much actually exists within that framework. Japanese conservatives are very traditional and engage in revisionism (see their comments about what Japan did to Korea). Also on not being Japanese if you marry a foreigner that's not true, if you're mixed more Japanese (older folk in my experience) won't see you as Japanese, but they have the same view of ethnic Japanese living overseas who migrate to Japan.

I'm just expecting Death Note 2.0 at this point. The new character seems to be another L style detective, but like, the mc's are bumbling idiots and clearly out of their depth. So, instead of evading the detective through geniusly crafted master plans, they're going to do it through sheer dumb luck. I feel like if the author didn't want us to sympathize with the aliens, he wouldn't have drawn the missing posters of the five young aliens that were brutalized. It shows that they have families and people who care about them. I don't get the sense that mc's actions are being glorified, if anything, it feels like a horrorific tragedy unfolding before our eyes. This might end up being an anti racism manga. Showing a cautionary tale of where those xenophobic and racist sentiments can ultimately lead. All the drama surrounding this manga can also be an argument for why media literacy is important. If we can't explore and criticize these sentiments in fiction, then how the hell else are we supposed to reconcile with them? Or even understand them? I will only drop this manga if the killing of aliens is somehow glorified or justified in some way that makes you want to root for the mc's. So far, I don't see that. If the author is employing horror manga style shading during a murder scene, it's not meant to be taken as a good thing, imo.

Yeah, the glorification of killing is what made me drop overlord after the lizardmen arc. Like we got to love these characters just for them to die, 2 get revived and what was the point. Right? Like if we glorify killing and especially of the killing of minorities it’s horrible. But seeing through the veil of racism and seeing it as a cautionary tale is a great way of looking at it, and might be true. We also have to look at the people jumping to conclusions, and then people jumping to conclusions about people jumping to conclusions it snowballs into a problem.

There is another possibility you didn't consider. The story could head in a direction where the Aliens are actually the bad guys, readers just gotta endure till it gets to that part. Once again, just another possible outcome - I think you're being too emotional too early. I'm gonna wait to see how it plays out before I make my final decision.

It is probably too early to decide, but if this were to come true, it would be the worst twist on this story ever. The female lead at least seems pretty irredeemable, like yeah, she isn't the one to kill the alien, but she enjoys knowing he's dead, and likes how the alien tastes, if you want to give the reader a sense of vindication if this twist does come to light, you can't make the pov character so unlikable chapter 1 If she has some sort of sad or tragic backstory involving the aliens then maybe it would be warranted, but right now, she is terrible. The guy seems more down to earth (ha) and while still isnt a good dude, does have a personal reason as to why he feels hurt and angry at the aliens. If he was the pov character, I think people would be less pushy, since he has more to grab on to emotionally compared to our literal pov character who for now just hate aliens for things most people do

He talked about Native Americans in the sense that colonialism was not a good thing and that a racist could easily misinterpret the idea of exclusive reserves for natives as evidence that they are “treated better” than white people. For those who want an update, the manga is now at chapter 8 and is giving reasons that the aliens aren’t all bad like kitami makes them out to be, one alien suspects her husband is cheated on her and asks namamoto to help investigate, after investigating they find out that he was getting her an expensive gift and she treats namamoto to dinner as thanks, the new boss at kitami’s job turns out to be the twin brother of the one who killed his parents in a car crash, after figuring it out, he tries his best to console kitami, and after that fails, tries his best to become friends with him. Also by chapter 8, it’s shown that kitami’s really the only one who actually hates the aliens, namamoto just wants to kill them because they taste good to her, and the alien assassination group just kills them for profit, not out of hate. It seems like most people just read the first few chapters didn’t want to wait for more and then just decided the manga was racist, because they thought that all the nuance and themes of the story were all going to be packed into the first 3 chapters and wanted to virtue signal about how good of a person they were for bashing this manga. Even now it’s too early to tell if the story going to keep building on the nuance, or pull a 180 and go back to “all aliens bad,” so it’s important to wait and see. It’ll probably be around chapter 30-40 before we can make concrete judgements about what the manga’s really about, but it’s also important to remember that it’s a comedy, so it probably isn’t meant to be taken seriously.

Real world polotics are toxic to fiction, It's why Beastars was so much better than Zootopia. While Beastars took the premise and ran with it, Zootopia had to make some kind of sloppy comparison to real world race relations. Which put so many barriers in the way of the story and where it could have gone. People had the same issue with Attack on Titan, where people saw the Eldians as Jews and got mad at the creator, since the prejudice the Eldians face, is based in real reasoning, and people thought that it was a poor representation of how prejudice works. In all honestly this story is actually harmless, it only becomes a problem when you read things into it that the story did not state. Beastars, suceeds where Zootopia failed, exploring the real ramifications of forcing animals that would normally eat eachother, to live together, going so far as to demonstrate the nature of things like animals who live in poverty selling body parts off on the black market, to allow carnivors who refuse to supress their instincts, a way to indulge without outright killing, and thus getting in trouble with the law. Taking this story at face value, it's just two peope who hate, an alien species, doing something about it. There's not enough here to talking about the themes based on the story alone, but I do think that stories are more enjoyable when you do things that way. Not every story has to have some message that reflects the world we're in, and I think people need to stop pretending it needs to.

I don't think that is clear that the Manga is racist just by that. Like, the protagonist are racist. But it dosn't really states that the protagonist are right. They could be bad people. Nobody watch Dexter or Death Note and thinks "Oh this show is promoting murder and justifying being a killer." You know, or at least you *should* know, that the protagonist is not a good person. This Manga dosn't really speaks to me as trying to convince the reader than the aliens truly deserve to die. I don’t know about Kagura Bachi, but let me just say this: Kaiju No. 8 is not cooking anything. That’s got to be one of the worst things Shonen Jump has put out in the last decade, and I’m dead serious. I’ve read about 70 chapters, so I know what I’m talking about. From an educational standpoint, please enlighten me-what exactly do you enjoy about it? Because I don’t get the hype at all. First of all, I gave myself a moment from this video to see people interpreted this very video and Drama Queen. I’m here to tell you, that the aliens are adults in Japan doing all sorts of irresponsible and illegal acts that resembles internet celebrity activities but nit the celebrities themselves. But do take that with a grain of salt, because crazy sh1t happens in Japan a lot with their Japanese citizens a lot, too. Plus, the core to the story of Drama Queen is the irresponsibility of the adults in Japan tarnishing the future for the youth. You see children in the story and the aliens are all adults. You see one of the main characters flashbacks and it is no different from Attack on Titan. The kid saw the irresponsibility of that adult alien that killed his parents in a hit and run. Which happens in Japan, too. But because this is the internet and brain rot rules these platforms with an iron fist, just like those that claim “fixing art”, you have proven that ignorance runs very deeply on your channel in this exact platform where people truly are showing that human cultures have no value on the internet.

Considering media literacy is dead. If this series is just 95% depictions of hate crimes, then at the last minute, try to flip it.
