The mental illnesses that usually cause this can be completely different from person to person, and it needs more introspection than assuming the worst. It could, of course, be an indicator of malice, but not always, and arguably moreso not in most cases. It also goes saying that, if you are a person who exhibits limerence, not only should you seek therapy or psychoanalysis but beware that you're way more vulnerable to manipulation and abuse than you think. I've been through it all myself. This also applies to women, not just men.

I don't believe the condition is in itself problematic, but rather that it heavily indicates being mentally ill, and people with visible mental issues tend to have less visible underlying traumas and issues that may be problematic. Plus, it's been turned against me by a woman to groom me in the past, so I kind of wanted to humanize people like me. I'm still not quite sure how to think of that and if I'm even truly a victim of anything, but that's a whole separate can of worms.

I have one of these creeps in my past too. Not only was it gross and off-putting, but it felt so stifling and suffocating. I don't ever want to mean this much to someone. After I broke up with him, he stalked me online for 2 years. I kept deleting my social media accounts, making new ones, making them as private as possible, and he still figured out ways to contact me. It all suddenly stopped, so I checked out his Twitter and FB (this was 12 years ago), and, yep, he was talking to another woman the same way. Hours of tweets and FB posts about how much he loved her and couldn't live without her. Saying, literally, exactly the same things he had said to me. I contacted her, told her about him, sent her screenshots of some of his messages to me, and then left it up to her to decide what she was going to do with the information. When I was younger I’d often get asked on dates by total strangers. Some guys pressured me like in the skit. Once a guy approached me on the beach (where I was fully clothed) and asked me out and persisted even after I a) told him I was 16 (he said he was 19) and b) said I had a girlfriend. He even began starting to shove his hand down the back of my skirt, right in the middle of a crowded public beach. This is all after him asking me out and me turning him down politely multiple times. He actually grabbed my phone out of my hands and put his number in it before he finally let me go. He really thought he was being charming the whole time and I think he actually expected I was going to call. This TikTok guy gives me those same vibes, only in his skit-slash-fanfic the guy who won’t leave you alone wins her over. This behaviour isn’t endearing, at best it can feel uncomfortable and at worst it’s genuinely scary. My mistake was that I felt bad for the guys and wanted to be as nice as possible because even though I didn’t like being approached I thought ‘it must be tough to ask a girl on a date, I don’t want to make them feel bad’. My go-to was to be friendly and polite but say I had a boyfriend because I figured that was the gentlest way to say no. I was too naive to realise that won’t cut it with some guys. I think a lot of girls feel the same way and want to be nice and don’t feel comfortable shutting guys down when they feel uncomfortable. After the incident on the beach I totally changed the way I dressed (even though I didn’t dress provocatively) by wearing baggier clothes and started being suspicious of any guy even checking me out. I even changed my demeanour and became very self-conscious, making sure I gave off ‘don’t approach me’ vibes in public and didn’t look at faces or make eye contact. I hate that I felt I had to drastically change myself to fend off the same sort of behaviour this guy is encouraging. I know I don’t speak for all women but unless you’re putting yourself out there I feel like most women would similarly feel awkward at best being asked on a date so abruptly by strangers, especially strangers who pressure them, and that awkwardness can turn to fear when guys are persistent and keep pushing. It’s not the same thing as approaching a girl, making small talk and reading the room to see if she’s comfortable enough to ask on a date. That’s totally fine. If she seems reluctant or laughs uncomfortably or lets you down gently, that’s your cue to make a gracious retreat. ‘Persistence’ isn’t a positive thing in that scenario and she won’t find it charming. If you have to literally convince her she’s not really feeling you. Even if this is actually just satire TikTok is full of dumb kids who might be guys, see this idiot and think women will find that endearing. They won’t. Even the relationship stuff is alarming. If my husband talked to me like that when we were dating it would have been a huge red flag and I’d have asked him to tone it down. It’s super unsettling to have a person love bomb you that way. Even if they have the best intentions it shows a lot of immaturity, and at worst it’s a massive red flag since lovebombing is a classic tactic used by awful people to trick you into committing and feeling safe. This didn’t make me cringe so much as remind me of exactly how it felt to be the imaginary girl in his pickup scenario and shudder in revulsion.
