What an AMAZING DAY!!!
Peter Adkison invited Brian Weissman and I for lunch and we had a great time laughing about the early days of Magic. After lunch, we walked to Peter's home and we decided to play some ALPHA 40.
Peter shares EPIC stories of the early beginnings of MTG and how it evolved to the greatest game in the world.

Back at Gencon in maybe..'96 or '97 I got to meet Peter Adkison at the WOTC booth. He was just chilling behind the table and playing sealed deck against people at random. I asked what he did at WOTC and he said that he's basically a janitor, that his job as president was to clean up messes. Super nice guy and I'll never forget the moment! If memory serves, he let me keep my free opened cards even though I lost! Class act all around.

I do remember that there was a first turn win tournament at Gencon 94. Where no games were actually played but each person had to show they could get a first turn win with the cards they drew. Another tournament was they held was black border Ironman tournament where the winner was awarded Beta booster box.

What would be more interesting are the lessons Peter A learned after selling to Hasbro. What he says in the beginning of the video, makes me think he has some interesting stories and better lessons to teach regarding that period of time for himself and the wisdom that comes from living through such an event.

AN cost $88,000 to print. There was 4.8M cards in 10,000 booster boxes. So each box cost $8.80 a pop to print and boosters sold for $1.95 a pack. 1400% turnaround, shared between WotC (research, painters, logistics, payroll) and the LGS's cuts. Still a very good business.

And there's the rub. The central tension of this game is the subjective player experience versus the whims of the market. We buy more expensive cards thinking that we'll have better games with more powerful stuff, but when you get to the top, the game becomes so much of a grotesque parody of itself that it makes you question why you even invested so much into it in the first place. Money ≠ Fun. You get fulfillment in the game by playing with people. Find folks who'll accept your decks as they are and stay around the same powerlevel if you want to get the most out of the experience.

They don't need creatures. Lotuses, Sapphires, Ancestral, and Timetwister should give you enough juice to do anything you need. Lightning Bolt is the more efficient and faster way to win here.

You don't need anything but those three cards. Ancestral Recall is the kill condition. I'd probably play 27 Recalls, 3 Timetwisters and 10 Lotuses. 12 Recalls will Deck your opponent.

The noice...... Damn. But how on earth no limits on card types back in the day? And how on earth did you draw 4 moxes in the first hand + black lotusses???? This is far from reality how people did play normal magic games. Btw I hate that overpowered kind of playing with tons of mana in the first pair of turns, no building up the atmosphere in the game. Nice try, great cards with that overkill on moxes and Lotus but no.... Not a realistic game of magic.
