I was in Iraq at the start of the war (Operation Iraqi Freedom). It was the end of spring and it was 140 degrees F in the shade. We didn't have tents for the first month. About a month after we got our tents, I manage to get a generator and one large air conditioning unit. The problem was we had more than one large tent. My Soldiers almost got into fist fights trying to convince me which tent should get the AC unit. We ended up moving all of the Soldiers that had to sleep during the day into one tent, and put the AC unit there. It was the first time in months that they got some decent rest. I also had my wife ship me a small AC unit from Walmart to go with my small tent. I definitely understand where you hubby was coming from. 😂😂😂 This may be the truest thing I’ve seen on the internet all year. When Talia says she’d gladly give up all the other appliances for the A/C - as a family, we had to make a choice between having a stove/oven or central A/C at our then 20+ year old double wide at the lake. A/C won by a landslide. You can do wonders with a large countertop toaster oven and a 2-burner hot plate when the need arises. A/C was non-negotiable in a middle GA summer, lol. We’d make that choice again in a heartbeat. Of course, that last bit made me spit out my tea laughing. Our poor ceiling fans have been literally running nonstop since Sept 2005. The last apt I lived in before my current one was plagued with ac issues the entire 3 years I lived there. One year ago I decided enough was enough. With the rent increase and crappy ac I moved. When finding a new apt, my main criteria was if the ac was good. I actually went to the ac unit to see how old it was and ran it in the apt before I would sign the lease. I was appy to see that they had a bigger unit for upstairs apt and it was fairly new. I sleep with the temp at 66 at night and turn it up to 71 during the day. I live alone so it's not unusual for me to have only the TV and ac running during the hottest part of summer. My highest bill last summer was $122. During the winter it's usually $60. One other thing... I have had my best sleep in a hotel room with the temp all the way down as cold as it could be. I was nearly breathing frost it was so cold. Slept like a baby.

And, on the plus side, my electric bill is only half in the summer what it is in the winter, and that's with a/c on 24/7. Since everything in the apartment complex is electric, the furnace works far harder in the winter than the a/c has to in the summer, so there's at least that compensation. The AC will always break down at the worst time, usually in the middle of a heatwave. Change your air filter at the beginning of each month (if you have pets) or at least every 3 months. Also, clean out the drainage. It gets clogged with dust, then causes a leak in your walls.

It's over 100% outside so my mom and I definitely got our air going. Last night, the power was out and it was like living in an oven! Thankfully, my brother and his family live so close we can walk there and they invited us over and it was so cool over there it felt so good! Bless thier hearts. Thankfully the power is back on and we can relax.

This is SO TRUE! We could not live w/o the A/C in the Summer ( and most of the Spring and Fall). I live in in Mobile, AL so it is not at all unusual to have the A/C on until October. Yes, I would give up other appliances to have central air. It is a must. Also, our ceiling fans stay on all year. It's a Southern Thing does it again! 🤣

I have lived in AZ for 50 years now. I don't miss the swamp cooler. My ac died in July 2020 when I was going through chemo. My brother in law loaned me his shop swamp cooler. Thank goodness we didn't have many monsoon storms during those 2 weeks.
@pauldoser98732 жыл бұрын
@@lorettacarroll6015 I had the opposite experience last year. My swamp cooler died, and it was a whole thing getting to work right, so I only had my AC for about 6 weeks. When I had lived with roommates, they'd never want to turn on the AC because of the bill. I'd get home, they'd be miserable in tank tops and shorts so I'd always say, "Wouldn't you pay $3 to be comfortable right now?" Then when I got my electric bill after the cooler broke, I had to give myself that speech after the fact. I was doing the math, breaking down the bill to each hour and going, "Yeah, I guess that was worth it, but just barely."
@pauldoser98732 жыл бұрын
@@suzannehartmann946 Haha! It regularly gets into the high 110's in the summers, but I have still never felt anywhere near as hot as I did when it was a humid 82° in Florida. I'm just not built for that. As for cooling systems, if it's a dry 100°, a properly installed swamp cooler will blow around 70° or so. Beyond that, I switch to AC.

Yes. Everyone loves their HVAC contractor in summer. Those glorious days of 90+ temperatures, intertwined with rapturous heights of humidity, accompanied by stratospheric electric utility costs, keeping those of us in the trade tirelessly (and profitably) servicing those neglected, overworked, and sometimes obsolete systems for another season. I'm all a-flutter just contemplating the first heat wave.

They have little units that can cool a space around you that you can carry room to room. I can sympathize. Ours failed the first summer we were here (hubby was stuck in Atlanta finishing business with his clients. ) The house was built in 1870, and I wasn't sure if a window unit would overload the system, so I got one for our daughter and me to huddle in front of....better than suffering without.
