This character invalidated my character ranking, fuck this character, my character was fine where it was at, why did this character have to ruin it!"

I know MKLeo always complained about how hard it was to win at the top level with him, but I'm surprised you didn't talk about Ike. Also Ness is even better than he was initially, because of the development his punish game has gotten with all the Magnet and PK Fire tech.

@@ebreggie8783 I had a 10minute rant about Ike but ended up cutting it because the video was taking way too long haha. He was a character who I had to go over his nerfs and changes a lot because they actually impacted him but yeah, he was 100000% overrated

Didn't villager have some really powerful custom moves in smash 4? I believe those were legal early on but they proved to be too difficult to unlock.

No, they were so broken that they'd banned them because of how messed they were. Villager, DK, Wii Fit Trainer, Marth and Mii Brawler had so much brutality in their custom moves.

Iirc the 1st tier list didn’t factor customs (but yes trip sampling was broken). Opinion on Villager was entirely carried by Ranai just like Mikey said, in the moment and in retrospect

Interesting video though it didn't feel as refined as the other videos. It's hard to talk about this. For 64 I would have gone with Mario because a lot of people before 4 saw this game as his best. However, a lot of his mains dropped him or weren't coming to tournaments anymore. Heck COVID ruined it because we barely get 64 tournaments compared to pre COVID Brawl and Smash 4 I would say Rob because in both games, he was considered great until the years went by. Ultimate is the only game where he stayed relevant. Yoshi in 4 imo was due to people thinking Fair was his only option. The community I played with thought that was his only means of being used which lead to having troubling MU. Wario and Ike had the same problem, kept getting buffed but it didn't help. Ultimate yeah Inkling for sure. Palutina for me I never saw as that great especially after the nerfs but people got so bent out of shape of this opinion. Yeah she is still good but isn't considered top 10.

In Brawl King DeDeDe and Ice Climbers basically ended up switching places (and moving one up) by the last tier list. Wobbling was completely unhinged and broken lol

I feel that in melee, sheik really fell off when people started learning more and more defensive tactics like crouch canceling, which she's particularly weak too. Also she struggles vs fox, so the faster and better foxes got, the more I feel sheik falls off

17:13 Yeah, DLC & buffs to others are why Ness & Villy feel off "hard". I didn't see many people saying they were the best during year 1 and they still ended the game as solid picks. Yoshi & Rob, honestly disagree with the final tier list. They were also strong characters that could reach lower-high tier IMO. IMO, the Pits, Duck Hunt & Greninja are much better picks for Sm4sh. The Pits were hyped up as high tier pretty early on, but as people found how underwhelming their kit was, along with many negative disjoints on important moves, they didn't accomplish much when the comp scene ended. (Watch Mockrock's old Sm4sh Pit video for more details) Duck Hunt (from my experience) was actively hyped up as a Top Tier back then, while (unlike Ness & Villy) actually receiving some decent buffs in patches and STILL ended as a maybe Mid or Low Tier depending who you asked despite some impressive showings during the last year and a half. A pretty big drop. Greninja was one of the most famous, believed titans of young Sm4sh who got hit with plenty of nerfs... but outside of a slightly smaller hurtbox, less endlag to his Up-Smash and a more consistent Up-Air (even those two moves were still useful), the rest of his nerfs were tiny and irrelevant gimmicks. Many of his drawbacks (iffy frame data, easy to combo and requiring a ton of tech skill) were present from the start, sometimes more significantly. He received plenty of useful buffs (better zoning, stronger kill moves and more flexible pokes/openings) along with also benefiting with the general system changes like higher shieldstun and removals of vertical LSI. So he ended the game's life with a very similar power-level to when came to the fray at Mid to Upper-Mid Tier. (Cite Bigbangbot's Sm4sh Greninja video for more details)

It’s shame there wasn’t too much footage of brawl gnw. It’s honestly one of my favorite versions of the character, his down throw tech chase, bucket braking, and being able to slowfall his down air manually made him pretty unique compared to other versions of the character

I was in a lot of Smash 4 discussion back in the day, so here's some of my thoughts. While I do agree Ness didn't deserve to be Top 10, I felt his overratedness was even more exaggerated. He kept showing up on PGR rankings with players like FOW, Scend, Gackt, and some regional heroes. I was especially offended (I was young) at the idea Lucas was better when like, there was one, maybe two good results from him? Needless to say Ness winning this year's Supernova was very gratifying. I don't think Yoshi's just overrated I think he just plain sucks. He has the 2nd worst grab in the game behind Pac Man, in a game where Shields are busted and grabs are a big part of the meta. It doesn't matter how good the rest of your kit is including throws, if you can't grab or have an extremely oppressive gameplan, you're not meta relevant. Bowser's a very weird case where he was considered the best best in the 3DS era, then one of the worst once people realized how to fight heavies again, then his grab game became buffed and now he sits in the middle. What a story.

All good. I've been saying that shit with Ness for years and no one listens. I've been playing him since 2016 and he does so bad into the meta of Smash 4 and Ultimate. A character with mediocre neutral and loses to swords is just painful in a meta where those are some of the most important and plentiful traits for top tiers.

I'd replace Pika with Pichu for Ult. The drop off was much larger, there's still a strong debate about were Pika places in Top or High Tier and I already gave my opinion in the Worst Characters video that the nerfs really weren't that bad on Pichu.

Pikachu in every game except 64 and Sm4sh (perfectly rated in the former and underrated in the latter) In Melee he gets chain grabbed to death by Sheik In Brawl he's invalidated by the top 3 (no he's not even with MK. That's a very common misconception) especially Olimar In Ult he's invalidated by Ness, G&W, and Pac-Man

I stopped watching anything Smash related (outside of character trailers) around 2021, so it's crazy to see MKLeo's main after Joker one place below the middle of the tier, on a 82 character roster. I'd imagine nerfs and new DLC contributed to that, but that still schocks me. Mi hermano really brings the best out of any char he plays.

For Sm4sh specifically, you also have to consider custom moves. Villager had some crazy custom moves that eventually got banned, so that may have had something to do with it

I'd say Little Mac is the most overrated character in Smash 4 and Ganondorf is the most overrated character in Ultimate. Both were seen as broken at launch, but are now seen as some of the worst characters in their respective games (or the worst in Ganondorf's case).

Great video! I agree that those characters are definitely overrated. Their weaknesses often gets overlooked, especially by newer players. It's interesting to see how community perception can sometimes skew our understanding of character strength. Looking forward to more in-depth character analysis videos!

Hot take: Diddy is always overrated. Because of his banana he takes a specialist to use well and also specific knowledge to play against. Post nerf in sm4sh he was being carried by Zero, insane at smash, multi game top player. In Ult he is carried by Tweek, top sm4sh player and multi character master throughout Ult. In PM he was carried by Junebug, the best Melee DK ever with a Sheik that's beaten Zain, and helped Zain become a top player. Zero is the sm4sh GOAT and it's not even close. When you look at the stats the other Diddy players in sm4sh only broke top 20 once; with Zinoto who was ranked 17th once and never got there again, with Zinoto and MVD continuing to sit in the 20-30 range until the end. Zero is just insane at smash, top Brawl player, high level in Melee, and top in PM. If you were around at the time it was always clear how far ahead he was of everyone else all the way until his retirement, being the main one to hold off the Bayos when all the top players started losing to her or switching to her themselves as the game became more and more focused on her as being by far the most important matchup. Not saying he isn't top 10 or anything, but IMO does he belong in the Bayo/Cloud tier? Absolutely not. IMO he would have fallen below Sheik, Sonic, Fox, and probably Mewtwo as well, who I think was underrated in sm4sh and was on the comeup towards the end of the game. Zero was just crazy strong in smash and one of the biggest grinders, top 3 in Brawl, contender for number 1 in early PM, 35th in Melee when he came back to it after brawl. He's just one of the best across the games, right behind M2K and Wizzy for best multi game smasher. Tweek is also just a monster in these games. Was a top player with bowser jr before picking up Cloud and immediately becoming top 15, staying there until he leveled up to 5th and finally 2nd behind Leo where he started in Ult. He's a multi character master, he's played Bowser Jr, DK, Cloud, Bayo, Wario, Yink, Wolf, Roy, PT, Joker, Sephiroth, and finally Diddy, all at top level and been pretty solidly top 5 (usually exactly 5th funny enough) for the whole duration of Ult. Of the top 100 Ult players he is one of only 2 Diddy players; the other being Dyr/Aaron in 2022/23, who was a top ~30 solo Diddy in sm4sh who was ranked 50th best of all time for sm4sh. Now in 2024 he was the only Diddy in top 50, with the only other Diddy in the top 100 being Ryuoh from japan at 72nd. At what point do we just acknowledge he could be a that level with multiple different characters, and Diddy is just once again being carried by a top player? Same as sm4sh, not saying he's massively overrated, he's clearly a decent character. But really, top 10? With just one guy putting the character on his back? Higher than Palu, Roy, Kazuya, Samus, Minmin, and Cloud, all of whom have more top players using them? I don't see it. Top 20? Yeah probably, but IMO the idea that he is top 10 is 100% because Tweek plays him, but Tweek could probably be 5th in the world with like 10 different characters, he just likes Diddy the best in Ult. Junebug doesn't have the the long time level of dominance or anything that the two above him do. In Melee he wasn't a god slayer. He was 2 levels below that, top ~40ish with Sheik for several years. His melee peak has been recently getting 27th on the summer rankings with solo DK, by far the best DK ever, beating multiple pros like Magi and Ginger. But in his home game of PM he was number 1 in 2015 by such a margin that they nerfed his character and changed the order to character pick before stage just to counter his dual main strategy. Since then, we have seen Diddy somewhat, but less and less over the years in PM. With Diddy nearly vanishing after BaconPancakes left, and more so used in combination with other characters for certain matchups. I think he is pretty close to fairly rated now being ranked 18/32, but even a few years ago the 3.6 tier list still had him 4th for years which was just insane. IMO that's the reality of Diddy, he has some great matchups and some pretty bad ones in basically every game. It takes a top player of a certain caliber to either have a secondary that can cover him, or to be so much better than everyone else that they can play losing matchups and still win the majority of the time anyway. He's hard to play but because he's also hard to play against people get away with stuff playing him that shouldn't work, which makes him seem stronger than he is. He's really an outplay character; he has several solid tools and one X factor with Banana that let strong players just go crazy with him in ways characters without that don't allow for, so he always seems strong because he is always outplaying people. But he has to outplay people to win, he doesn't get to rely on a crazy early % kill move or 0 to deaths or disjoints. He's fast but he's not a speed demon, only top ~20, he doesn't hit like a truck, his frame data is great but again not best in class. His projectiles are good but nothing crazy except banana which in some matchups he can't even really use. IMO he is the most consistently overrated character in smash. Not by a ton, but just by 5-10 spots in basically every game.
