In the days when the UK RAT packs had tinned stuff in them , we were taught to puncture the tins, place the tins in the canteen, put water in the canteen to just below the tin lip and heat the lot up, When hot, tins were taken out, fully opened and eaten from the tin, the hot water was used for a brew (tea, coffee or dissolving a couple of the boiled sweets to make a sweet fruity drink) or shaving as required. No washing up of canteen required. They also had a tube of condensed milk, a tube of jam, boiled sweets, chewing gum, toilet paper, salt pepper, matches, tin opener. There was a tin of ' cheese, processed' known to all as 'cheese, possessed' and was a sought after item, especially coupled with the packet of oat biscuits. The chocolate bar was usually one that had been discontinued years before. You carried your own KFS set, although the boast was all you needed was a spoon. You also kept a couple of the foil bags to seal a sucking chest wound under the action dressing (thank god I never saw that put to use). The best packs were the 10 men 24 hour pack. Lots of extra goodies in them. The Arctic packs also had extra chocolate and drinks. This Italian one would be a hell of a burden to carry. We always had a sweepstake going, winner being the first to find a cherry in the fruit cocktail.

Then there was the famous Khaki Ceramic Cracker: The entire contents of a 24 hour ration pack cooked in both mess tins, including the chewing gum and toilet paper 😆 Racing spoons at the ready lads!

Fuel tabs burn faster and hotter if you break them in half or even quarters. That way you'll only need one tab to boil the water.

Totally agree, I had the mod "booze" edition of this, friggin expensive, but luckily found someone that really wanted one, so traded it off. The stove is the only thing I really wanted. Good vid

Great review Sticky! I have been wanting to try one of the Italian rations for a long time but it is hard to find one that is fresh and without the overly expensive shot of alcohol in it. I do find it odd that the main meals look like a standard commercial item though. Thanks for sharing!

It’s all in the name.. not much to these rations other than the gimmicky shot of liquor. The best parts were the stove and gelatin covered meat.. that being said, i think every ration reviewer needs to try one at least once 😅. Hope you had a great thanksgiving

They fuel tabs weren’t that great. You need about two to heat up a semi full canteen cup covered, so thats pretty crappy. Pretty much two tabs per cup of coffee per meal.

Always fun to watch these. I know I was all hype when I got my first Italian ration. The best thing in these is usually whatever protein is in the gelatin. I think I've only had the turkey so was neat to see you had pork and chicken. On the flip side of the coin I think the Spanish rations are some of the most underrated rations. They actually are the cuisine most people would eat in Spain. A few extra spices like sea salt, smoked paprika or some lemon changes the whole flavor profile. Yum!

The big vitamin tablets are effervescent water soluble drink tablets. Common in Germany in tubes of 20, they're also found in UK Lidl stores, excellent for preppers or if you're making your own field ration packs.

Just once, I’d like to see a ration reviewer use a water purification tablet, then taste the water. Also, geez.. who needs 3 toothbrushes in one day? Lol. What we used to do with the old C-rations was use the fruit juice and mix it into the meat entree, after you remove the fat, to give it a better flavor.

Went through basic and AIT in 82 ( 12B ) we were some of the last to get the old canned C ration then nothing but MREs got an actual P 38 hung on my dog tags my whole time in the military still have it now

Steve is the MRE Master. He eats and consumes pretty much everything in the pack unless it looks like it has gang green consuming the item, and then sometimes he still partakes of the meal. Ya gotta give Stive the proper respect because he makes it look so simple especially watching other channels attempt to do what he has invented.

Italian rations much like the german rations are food items one can find in their super markets as brand names. Good things but not much as collectibles. And as you mentioned they are too heavy to carry except in peace time.

Save those extra toothbrushes for cleaning my equipment. My first Russia ration cost me $100, opened it and smelt that God awful rotten fish smell not knowing it was the damn fuel tabs so I threw the whole box in the trash. I thought something leaked.

Three toothbrushes per day sounds a bit excessive. I can understand the giant tube of condensed milk, if this kit has coffee with every meal. The cans of meat though... Are they better if you dump it in with the contents of the can? Ravioli with pork in gelatine, for example. Gelatine is a pretty old preservation method, a layer of it can create a sort of airtight edible foil. The two soup cans contents looks pretty thin there. I'm not sure about lugging all of this around. The cans add a lot of weight. It's one thing to get issued with one of these in bivouc or at a post where you don't need to trek around with them, and can sit down to cook all these things.

Well, it wasn't so awfully long ago-pre MRE days- that virtually all U.S. field rations were canned stuff. There were freeze-dried "LRRP" rations but they weren't commonly issued. Anyway, if you wanted to eat that's what you carried. Generally you made up for the weight of your food by not carrying such things as sleeping bags etc. b/c you still had to carry water and ammo. It pretty well sucked, and God knows why the Italians are still issuing all that canned food.

Canned fruit has the highest seal failures after several years has passed it's best by date. The high acid in fruits will always eat through metal cans and the sticky feel on surface might be a sign it may be leaking but that could also be some splashed syrup during the manufacturing, as long there is no sign of corrosion near its seams which is the most common area cans fail. Also cans that don't leak but swell up (botulism) and then release gas (exception is soda) when opened is known as "the fart of death" should be burned or disposed so no fool will eat it.

It looks like a huge helping of condensed milk. That stuff usually comes in a tin, the tube looks a lot lighter and less sloppy to carry around. I guess if you want coffee with every meal, and milk to go with it. What's the best use of the meat in gelatine? To go with the crackers, as a cold cut side dish, dumped into the soup?
