I commented on an earlier Black……..White vid about how Rose, while coming from at least a kinda innocent place, wants to badly to connect and relate to people that she ends up idealizing or being envious of things that Black people/ POC have gone through bc shared trauma often means connection. Her talking head after having those kids open up to her is a great example of this. Those kids were describing deep, painful traumas that they’ve experienced, things that no one should have to go through, and Rose is so desperate to relate to people that she doesn’t realize how much pain she would have to go through to be able to “know exactly how you feel”.
@BlisaBLisa Жыл бұрын
I think she just, doesnt know how to comprehend it, she sees these people who went through things she cant imagine and she wonders how she can relate and connect with someone whos life has been so different from hers. idk to me at least it didnt feel like she envies them or wants to go through what they went through just to be able to relate, her comment about wanting to say she "knows what its like" but cant comes across as someone trying to understand how to bridge this gap of having lived very different lives to someone. I think its a relatable feeling, sometimes someone you love is telling you about a struggle theyre going through that you cant relate to at all and you wish you knew how to support them but you don't. shes trying to form a connection with these people and shes at a loss for how to support them with issues she doesnt understand
@fuzzyotterpaws4395 Жыл бұрын
We all understand what people are going through. EVERYBODY experiences hate and judgement, not just black people. I was left out of my PE sports team for being short and weird for example, and black kids made jokes about me being white, the same like white people making jokes about black people. And now being bisexual and part of the LGBTQ community I understand hate even more. EVERYBODY gets hate and judgement, and you don't need to "go through" something to UNDERSTAND.

It's kinda similar to how teenage romanticized suicide when 13 Reasons Why came out, self harm when AHS: Murder House came out, and eating disorders when Pretty Little Liars came out. When teenagers see people they relate to and think are cool, they want to emulate them. It's also very likely that Rose has little to no community connections based on how she views the behavior displayed by Nick, which was normal behavior for teens at that time (and still is now).

The guy talking about "they don't belong there" and hyping up profiling did not surprise me one bit. My favorite one was I was working in a gas station, it was pretty dead but one woman came in and while she was paying, she complained about the price of gas going up. I just did the usual "it's getting crazy, I hate it too", but she responds with a wild conspiracy theory that the "indians" control the gas prices in Canada and that's why we need to... do something? It was a few years ago, I can't remember it all, but she was definitely talking about the indigenous people of Canada, not people from India. I had another customer, at my current job, talk at me for an hour about how the government created covid to kill off white people and make more room for indians (he was actually talking about people from india). He was completely serious. Some of my older relatives on my moms side make little comments similar to what dude said, "they don't belong here." I have a great aunt (great great aunt? She's the youngest sister of my great grandmother) who told me that she thinks residential schools were actually beneficial for native kids. Because otherwise, they'd never have learned how to do anything and would just "do drugs and refuse to work"... AFTER the mass grave was uncovered in bc. Some white people who seem like the type that would never say something racist or hateful, are the exact ones saying the most vile stuff when they think they're talking to someone who might agree.

I think it says a lot about how Black people have to always make accomodations to ensure everyone else comfortable with their existence that the mom (I haven't learned the names of anyone on this show) had to say so much to preface the revelation that she is black. She didn't want to make her friend uncomfortable with her blackness. Which obviously shouldn't have to happen. IDK how to properly express myself but yeah it felt so awful that she had to be so cautious about it. i honestly think that this would be super awkward no matter what. i'm not saying it has nothing to do with her being black, but the fact that she, a black woman, had worn makeup to fool someone into thinking that she was white for the entire span of their relationship is very obviously an incredibly awkward situation to be in even without racial stereotypes coming into play. i mean, i'm white, and i can guarantee you that if i had a black friend who i'd known for two weeks and i had him fooled into thinking i was black, i'd be scared as hell to admit that i'd been wearing blackface (obviously). it's just such an awful thing to own up to. even with the roles reversed, i can hardly imagine anything more cringey lol
@nat2982 жыл бұрын
but i should clarify that i do understand that black americans are often forced to pander in ways that make white people feel comfortable with their existence and i don't want to detract from that in any way. i just think that this situation in particular is so absurd (because of the elaborate setup) that this feeling of needing to compensate for being black may not be the main culprit behind her fear and cautiousness
@crazyowlgirlcncowner2 жыл бұрын
@@nat298 I get where you're coming from. :) I'm not necessarily saying that it's the main source of her worries. Like I said in my original comment, yeah, she's afraid of revealing to her new friend that she is hiding something. That of course will make it a strange situation and anyone would feel nervous to reveal the truth. What I'm saying is that there's maybe more weight to it because she's black. It's not just "oh I deceived you" its the reality that she's actually Black. You may not realize it, but that makes it so much more awkward because you never know what prejudice or biases the white friend could have towards Black people. We don't necessarily know if the white woman would've been friends with her if she had shown she was Black from the beginning. And additionally, even from the best perspective, the white woman could've felt worried that she might've said something that could come off as offensive about Black people when she wasn't aware her friend was Black. There's just added depth to it because historically white people have been the biggest oppressors of Black people. I think that's what a lot of people don't get, especially when they aren't from the United States and aren't aware of the weight this issue really carries in this country especially. Black people have to be hyper aware of everything they do, even moreso because they are Black. It is often up to Black people to make white people feel comfortable, and non-threatened by their very existence as Black people. Many people may think US Americans are overly sensitive about these things, but the truth is that it is just that big of an issue. The very existence of a Black person causes a problem for so many non-blacks. Especially since this woman was revealing she was actually Black in a space where there were predominantly white people. So I get what you mean. It's definitely not the only reason. But it heightens it. :) Hope this helps, although you'd be better off seeking information from the African American community directly as I am not Black. I just have an interest in ethnic studies as a person of color and I like to inform myself so I can be more conscientious about how I interact with others and to learn about their experiences. :)

It's not brought up but have you noticed how little she interacts with Bruno or her "mother" vs Nick with his parents who barely appears? It's cause they're not a real family, they're all actors with only Bruno and the mom having a relationship. Now does that mean their reactions weren't real? Very hard to say in the US and a bit questionable of why one would even wanna play the "racist dad" people think is real so I lean towards this isn't fully an act.

I think Rose or whatever the white girl's name is is-and I can give her some leeway on this because she's like...7/3rds of the way to being 18-misunderstanding how most relationships and connections are formed. While similar experiences CAN create a connection-something we see in America most often with Jewish people and black people (a sense of a community anywhere as opposed to a very interned community in one place, based on common experiences and cultural ties)-that's not really the basis for a truly strong, well-rounded connection and relationship. The basis of all strong relationships isn't necessarily shared experiences, but shared beliefs and values. Two people can have the same experiences and come out of it with different values, but two people who have, regardless of experiences, similar values and beliefs, are almost certainly going to have a stronger basis for a connection. Again, she's fairly young, so no one can expect her to understand this in full, but it is a good lesson to learn. Thinking that the only way you can have a full, rounded connection with someone is by having the same lived experiences is what keeps many people from reaching out to different kinds of people to form relationships with. That's a key part of racism, too; of course the white people and black people are different and they're TOO different to ever ACTUALLY integrate! Which is, of course, untrue. The only true war is the class war. Also Bruno saying 'we've all been enslaved' my brother in Christ WHAT are you talking about

Bruno was Carmen's boyfriend at the time. Yes, the three were involved in acting in very minor ways, but they were an actual family (though the show does seem to imply that Bruno was either Rose's father or step-father, when this was not the case).
