@@danskizz7272 If you know beats you know 4 bar clip at 90 is 10.666 seconds (10 + 2 thirds) So if your 4 bar clip / sample is under then it's a bit over 90bpm A producer or engineer knows timings and beat lengths / fractions for many reasons from FX, modulation, manipulation, composition etc 60/BPM = (q)beat beat * 4 = bar beat / 4 = 16th Shorter bars = higher bpm 1 bar at 0bpm would be long enough to wrap around the universe infinite times.

I appreciate the more tedious aspects of the OT workflow. It caters to my sensibilities; I like to be in control of whatever I am doing, so I am not a big fan of randomness and probability [which you can do on OT, amazingly]. Humanizing and creating organic feels on a rigid TR-style step sequencer challenges me and encourages me to think of creative solutions to get to my destination. The Octatrack forces me to be present and mindful of whatever I am doing. Putting my brain on auto-pilot and just creating programs to hammer something out on a 4x4 with no quantize is cool and all, but it just doesn't challenge me like this sequencer does. With the OT I have a much greater appreciation and sense of accomplishment for what I create.
@ghost-user5592 ай бұрын
To be fair, with self control we could definitely use a Daw the same way, it’s just way easier to be tempted by all the bells a whistles. Personally all I have is a Daw, so I use these videos to absorb the mindset of mindfulness without having the hardware.

I wonder if hip hop producers underrate the OT because they see the x0x style sequencer and immediately get turned off thinking it lacks the immediacy of something with drum pads that's tailor made for real time drum recording and finger drumming. And maybe it does in a way, but you clearly show in your videos that you can still get great grooves out of it.

For me, I think it is Specs, and lauout/workflow. OT 8 Audio/8 Midi for 16 total tracks looks small on paper vs 128 Midi/8 Audio on MPC One. I tend to see more Electronic producers using Elektron products in their videos, and doing live sets. All in all, I am digging the flow being shown here

Sounds dope af. But I don't think Octatrack is really underrated so much as cost prohibited. I mainly use DAWs, but would love to get an octatrack. But I cant really justify the cost. And anytime anyone is looking for sampler hardware, I mention the octatrack, and they cry about the pricetag. Would be a lot more popular if it didn't cost twice as much as my first car.. 🤷🏻♂️
@jonmakesbeats2 ай бұрын

For some reason my hip hop producer friends chop their samples on Akai and my EDM friends do theirs on Elektron. To me they do 90% of the same things but their individual workflows seem to predispose genre-biased results. For instance that front and center step sequencer on the Octatrack puts me into my house music brain just by being there. Cool to hear you making lucious hip hop grooves on that Elektron box though!!!

I think it just depends on who you are hanging around. I normally hang out with synth dudes, and Elektron pretty much dominates that space because of good visibility within that community compared to the beat making community. MPC suffers the same within the "synth dude" space with very bad visibility and really poor marketing as being a "ghetto groove box" or an expensive drum machine. I ended up getting the MPC as a multi synth sequencer( after buying 7-10 other sequencers over the years), and it's now my favorite sampler/do everything box too.
