Grima is the GOAT. Gleb and Max Sysoev are brothers and the geniuses behind Grima, Second to Sun, and Ultar. Gleb’s vocals are absolutely incredible, he’s probably my favorite black metal vocalist. Seriously listen to them, please. Tales of the Enchanted Woods, Will of the Primordial, and Rotting Garden are all phenomenal albums. Frostbitten isn't quite as strong, but still has a couple really good tracks.

@@Escar2000 ah man that’s really unlucky. Fen were surprisingly great as I’m not big on their albums besides the newest one. And yeah I agree his crowd interaction, while subtle, was great. Wasn’t too impressed by Harakiri unfortunately, wasn’t a fan of the vocalist having his back to the audience and standing off the stage for most of it. I get it’s for theatrical reasons but what can you do. Very odd when he jumped into the crowd, finished the last song and immediately fucked off out the front door as if he’d left his oven on. I did manage to speak to their main man and got a pick from him, spoke to an Ellende guitarist too. Stood by the barrier in front of the stage for a while after cos I didn’t wanna leave

For those who like to discover "hidden gems" in BM - the band called Arnaut Pavle from Finland. Very fast, very rough and aggressive. Their song Carpet Bombing Nazareth is 1:44 of pure hell energy. Something opposite to 8 minute long atmospheric BM ballades.

Havukruunu are one of my favourites, I’ve been lucky enough to see them live three times in the last few years. They’re top dudes too! Lamp of Murmuur definitely make my top ten too, not just because the European touring band is Dödsrit, who also make my top ten 😂 I’m going to Fortress Festival in Scarborough UK next June so I’ll be ticking a lot of bands off those lists! Der Weg einer Freiheit, Gaerea, Mysþyrming, Wolves in the Throne Room, Blackbraid, Fluisteraas, Thy Light, Ultha, Panopticon, Lamp of Murmuur (again), Dödsrit (for the first time 😁), and loads more. And there’s still a few bands to be announced!

Also Kaevum not being there is surprising as Natur is one of the greatest BM albums of all time. Probably my top two BM albums are Metal Noir Quebecois from Forteresse and Natur from Kaevum. Nice list! As the official hipster follower of this channel, I would like to add three bands that are quite famous (at least the first two) and a bit controversial (especially the first one): - Liturgy. I know that these Yankees are critiqued for their pretentiousness, but I've listened to their music and I can assure that it is a very interesting and eclectic re-reading of some tropes of black metal in a blissful/triumphant way. Albums like Aesthethica and H.A.Q.Q. are really excellent, and I highly recommend them if you want to try something different yet engaging. - Panopticon. Another great name in the US scene, with a quite distinctive interpretation of atmo-black that mixes the epicness of the godfathers Weakling with American folk music. I would consider this one-man project almost a "trve" version of John Fahey, in some weird sense. - Gnaw Their Tongues. This is surely not hipster black metal, if this reassures you. Another one-man project, this time from the Netherlands, that is quite notorious for its experimental/industrial/noise approach to black metal. Mories (the man behind GTT) is responsible for some of the most hellish, dark yet fascinating soundscapes that I've ever experienced, and it is strongly suggested. And that's it. Peace and love to y'all :) Edit: Whoops, Farvann already put Panopticon in its honorable mentions. Silly me.

My issue with these bands is that I never know what I might like and it might turn out to be NSBM. Peste Noire, for example. That snippet for them was top shelf music. But if it's NSBM, I want no part of it.

I wouldn't consider them NSBM, just edgy degenerates. The album shown in this video is their best IMO. If you want very overtly French black metal, Pensées Nocturnes is much better and not nearly as controversial afaik

They are self proclaimed "fascists", but as far as I know they're not NS... I don't know if it makes it any better but I'm usually still a bit wary of guys with KPN shirts of patches in public though.

I'm happy to see Spectral Wound but no love for Forteresse or Monarque in the honorable mentions ? Cantique Lépreux and Grimoire also have black metal solo project. Also Délétère and Gris are other amazing québécois black metal.
