40 minutes in and so far the movie comes off as a petty story about a girl bordering stalker of a cute golden boy who's too polite to openly reject her. Great inspo for young women. Let's continue watching.

I’ve never seen this movie but was always curious about it. This was a classic he’s not that into you, you are not it for him, don’t ever pursue a man. Sometimes we as women do it to ourselves break our own hearts. We took it as empowerment to go after who you want but many women painfully learned for decades you cannot shall not ever pursue a man. You can’t make a man love you.

You can absolutely pursue a man and make the first move. What you can't do is get a man who doesn't want you to change his mind. And you shouldn't want to. But women being direct and forward is fine.

@@cl5470 You absolutely can however it is not wise. Women have such divine energy most men if given the opportunity will take it. Meaning if you pursue a man he most likely will take you up on the offer even if he doesn’t really like you or even think you’re his type etc. etc. It is best to let a man show and tell you he’s interested. It’s not easy for a man to just turn down a woman because ultimately he will still get to experience you even if you’re not it for him and he knows it. But of course do what you want.

Trying to convince a man that YOU are the ONE is always, and without exception, a mistake, IMHO. Either, he eventually leaves and you are heartbroken AND humiliated AND pissed off at all the time wasted. The last bit may take longer to sink in... Or you actually convince him that you ARE his once-in-a-lifetime soul mate and you wake up one day, only to realise that you made a very big mistake. You never saw him for what he really is.

I'm not even finished with this, and I already feel SO embarrassed for the woman in the movie. It's SO embarrassing and sad to see a woman humiliating herself like this for the approval of a man who doesn't really like her like that, AND she doesn't even like him as a person, he's just a projection- a fantasy she made up in her head. I can see this movie did a number on Gen X and boomer women who saw this movie as "aspirational." Most romantic comedy/romance movies of this generation aged like milk - with some exceptions, of course. I don't see millennial modern women, much less a Gen Z woman, seeing this and resonating with this character. Of course, we have the "pick me"s and toxic women even in this day, but it's less common sense this type of thinking and behavior, thank heavens. Edit: He f*cking abandoned his child??? WTF???? And everybody was ok with that sh1t?

This movie, her character, it was all just so exhausting! I can see so clearly, thanks to your analysis, just how problematic this movie has been because of how impactful its been on the way women view love and relationships, Carrie and JLo being absolute perfect examples. Ive never seen this movie, and now never will, but I am definitely a victim of believing in the Carrie/Big dynamic for the majority of my life...only just realizing that now in my mid-30s! Ugh, its really quite a shame that this toxicity is the message thats been pushed for soooo long. Nothing aspirational about this at all.

They made cathy annoying to make us side with Hubble. However, as judgmental as she was, she has a point: Hubble takes everything lightly because as a wealthy withe male in america, nothing will touch him. he lacks empathy for the struggling classes (women, black peoples, poor people etc) . Him and his friends don't care much because they are privileged.

I don’t understand why Katie was so focused on Hubble’s career. Seems like she had her own thing going (as a journalist I believe?) and could have channeled all her ambition and hard-headedness into her own career. I feel this could have perhaps taken a lot of pressure and focus off Hubble and his career and she could’ve gotten to know him for who he really was.

Final thoughts from me - they should have broken up before they ever got married. When someone loves you despite disliking so many things about your core values and beliefs, that just can't work out. I'm still not sure what they loved about each other outside of looks. I guess it's the illusion of each other, how compatible they could be if the other just cut out a huge chunk of what makes them them. Just sad that so many probably were influenced by this. The idea that too many differences in opinion and values is fixable if you just dont talk about it or hide your dissatisfaction is so damaging. Hiding parts of yourself from your closest person is not something to aspire to! The shocking absent father, barely even asked about his daughter, is i hope, an element of the time only. Though i will say i have the notion in my head that 'men' don't really care about their kids or want to raise them and would do as little as possible given the chance. Thats my own damage to work through 🙈 In relation to carrie and big, she sooo thought she was a katie, and maybe she was but didn't learn the lesson that they just weren't compatible enough in the first place 🙈 totally missed the point i think.

The way we were has always had such an impact on my life. I love it so much but I always like to point out that the ending we got is not the original ending Barbra wanted for the story. Still, so iconic. Carrie and Big have a different dynamic going for them (she was delusional and out of touch and he was an idiot who though he could do better until his assholery destroyed all other choices he could have had to reestablish himself into the upper echelons society he so clearly wanted to belong to so he had to settle for his literal character twin ), but I can see what they were trying to emulate, despite how unsuccessful they were in the end.

At least based on what we see in the review, Katie never does anything concrete to make the world a better place. She talks about bread lines, but we don't see her volunteering at a soup kitchen feeding people. If Katie lived in the modern world, she's be a keyboard warrior, endlessly retweeting and doomscrolling, and popping onto other people's feeds to post "Some people are allergic to pancakes actually and what about Gaza????" on their tweet of their breakfast. That's what makes her annoying. What is her job always in news through the film, so she endlessly reports on new issues that stress her out? Whose life has she improved with her activism?

@@knitwitchpgh yeeeaaa, at the time I had forgotten that part from movie, yet hadn't had watched this video that far yet.😅 At the time when I watched the movie, I was thinking how low her self esteem must be if she enjoys drunken sex that the man doesn't even do consciously, nor remembers.

With a Russian Jewish background , I can see where Katie got her ideals and perspective. My grandparents were the same generation- they were first generation Americans who held onto the socialist ideals of the Motherland while also wanting to blend in. It seems like common sense to me - either try to fit in or try to be an agent of change- but they didn’t see it that way. As I got older and more settled in my own identity, they always seemed disappointed that I didn’t want to be more “assimilated.” I used to resent that, but recently I realized, they were raised in a totally different world than I was at the turn of the century. I can’t say that I like Katie- I personally would find it hard to be her friend- but given her background, I think her attitude comes from two opposing desires that just didn’t mesh at that time in American culture. Obviously there is no excuse for the SA, that was so wrong.

I dont like Katie. She is a self-important, self-involved, self-indulgent person who doesn't get that she's the most selfish person in the world. She is a bit triggering to me, like Angela yelling at Michael on 90 day fiance. Wearing people down.

I originally watched this film for history class, not so much the pop culture references so I didn’t give a damn about the “relationship” initially. I had to turn it off and fast forward after *that* scene because Katie really pissed me off. I get the mechanics and star power but the “romantic” plot makes me question how it got cited so frequently. The opening made it obvious that ideologically these characters were not going to work together. But even looking at it within and outside the historical lens, Katie looks way worse than Hubble even though he’s supposedly the more conservative of the two. Hubble at least has some character growth while Katie does the same thing in a different guise - just swap the Spanish Civil War with HUAC.

I must say you make great videos, not only SATC (which always get a lot of views- everywhere) but you don't get the views you deserve. I would recommond thinking about your titles since negative titles get the most views. Maybe something that could rage the people...rage bait.. I know I know but you deserve so much more and more people need to see this and your other videos. I know they would spend even 2 hours watching or listening. Think about it you're too perfect and proper this doesn't work ....

Hmm, Katie only gave up because he was strong enough to end it. I don't like the absent father but I'm getting the vibe that he was forced to give up his daughter because he knew Katie would manipulate him to get back together if he was present in his daughter's life.

I am going to have to do more research into this movie and how it was received. I was too young to see this when it first came out - I was 11. I always knew it was a big thing and Barbara Streisand was a big actress. I think she went into acting after her singing career of which she was at the top. Anyway, it is hard to watch this. I don't see any good sides to this relationship. It makes me cringe and only reminds me of times I liked someone who didn't like me and in retrospect, happy they didn't date me nor hopefully did I pursue them much. Anyway, I can't see it as influencing my generation- the tail of boomers. But I'll have to maybe watch it, painful as that seems to be. And read contemporary reactions to the movie. It has peaked my interest because I can't see this as inspirational at any time of my life.

I know someone who’s only personality is politics now. It drives me nuts because if they disagree, they break up the friendship. If they don’t approve of the politics (small things you would experience at any job) they would quit the job. This person is also a narcissist. I don’t understand why politics is the be all end all with these two (katie and person I am discussing). They should just try to talk about anything else.

It depends. If your politics involve not thinking gay and trans people should exist or that all immigrants are evil, you are a terrible person, and no one owes a relationship to someone who hates them. Breaking up a friendship over a difference of opinion on taxes? Yeah, that's too far.

I’ve known people like this and it is maddening. The minute you even just ask a question about their worldview or ideology, they say you must be a bad or even an “evil” person to not agree completely with their politics without first examining them. It is so bizarre. I have opinions and certain political leanings but I’m not arrogant enough to think my principles and beliefs are beyond examination. I’d rather have people in my life who challenge me than live in an echo chamber.

I dont really understand how deep they're acting this is. They're just incompatible, she likes his looks and some aspects of him, he apparently likes a part of her too, not sure what 🤷🏼‍♀️ bolshiness? Either way, they just aren't compatible, its not that deep! If no one is willing to budge in any way to feel better at all, why would that be a good relationship? But also, if you can only be together if you both change completely for each other, that's awful! It's just 2 people who fundamentally don't mesh. Why does she even want him? I cant tell 😂 Oh yikes marriage, a baby, no no very bad. They should never have gone this far!

It's sad that Carrie's story only used the kinda bad things from The Way We Were: - Forcing a romance between people who are too different - Girlbossifying toxic masculinity (just do the bad things men do. You're a girl, it's okay!) - Romanticizing abandonment However, The Way We Were also had TRUE ROMANCE. Katie was so in love with Huddell, she learned about him, took a genuine liking in his interest (read his book twice), already had an idea how she wanted to date him (row with him, cook for him, carriage rides). And she really wanted to talk to Huddell about his real purpose in life, his writing. His buddies just seemed like carefree people who don't really pay that much attention to him. But Katie does. These are all very good reasons why Huddell really fell for Katie inspite of their differences. Carrie and Big don't know eachother. All they really shared was a sigarette. Their love is so damn shallow, their movie ends up with the most romantic thing between them is Big building Carrie a shoe closet with new shoes. Which is why everyone mocks their "love story" but had a admiration for the love story between Katie and Huddell.
