I’d love to hear what makes a great mug in your opinion too! Like mug and handle shape, clunkiness/daintiness, width vs height etc. I’m new to ceramics and I’m having a great time figuring out the design aspects of mugs

That's a great question. I value form and function equally on a cup. I like a thin rim - too thick is bad for mouth feel. I also like if the handle is well balanced - I know that I made some dodgy cups back in the day where the handle wasn't actually that functional but they looked cool. I want it to feel nice in my hand. I think to commit to buying a piece though, I have to be drawn to what it looks like first. I like the proportions of all of these. I guess I like a mug to be taller than it is wide, but for coffee I don't mind a more squat cup. I really don't like glazes that flow too much and like blend in with each other - I am seeing them around a lot at the mo and they don't vibe with me. I like something that looks different to my own work, so all of these ones remind me of something other than my own practice. I tend to also like muted colours - the exception of course is the Hollie Cooper one. It's still fairly muted but the colours make me really happy. And I really need the glaze to be stable. I have seen many cups underfired and it really irks me! It's gotta be fired to maturity or it will bum me out.

Thanks for sharing. I buy a mug from every pottery who has helped me on my pottery journey and use those on rotation at home - never use my own but I do at my studio - not sure why the difference. Lol the Arcoroc - we used to play football with those. Fun when they shatter.

That's a lovely idea. I haven't had one of my Arcoroc's shatter but you're the second person to mention that lol, kinda interested to see what that means now!

I love this video! It is so interesting hearing what draws an artist to the work they purchase and I cannot wait to begin my collection of pieces from other potters!

Arcoroc! We had the entire set growing up, think we only had one randomly shatter in the cupboard😂 My favourite cups at the moment are some I picked up at Driving Creek and an old Hornsea set.

Thanks for sharing your mugs. Mine are all by artists from Germany: Monti Pots, Sophie Bandelin, Indre Ceramics and Salkeramik. I have your lovely pottery poster at home and plan to get the book soon. Best wishes from Germany.

Danke! It's actually available in Deutsch if you'd prefer - although I think the cover isn't as pretty!

I'm sooo particular about mugs, a total mug snob. I need it to hold at least 14-16 oz because I'm not interested in getting up to refill my cup a bunch of times. I need the handle to fit at least three of my fingers so I can lift and drink without having to stabilize with my other hand. I need it to be thin walled but especially at the rim so I don't dribble when I drink. I like a handle that is long down the length of the cup and doesn't stick way out to the side. Likewise, the handle needs to be broad enough (like a ribbon) so that I can hold it at the top with the flat of my thumb. Also the whole thing has to be pretty and harmonious, but not so busy or cheerful that it will annoy me when I'm grumpy in the morning. I finally found a mug that fitted all my standard exactly, so I commissioned a set of 8 identical ones from the potter. That made me so happy! And now they make me happy every day.

Likewise... I try to buy a mug from potters I admire and I seldom use my own. I wonder if it's a rather usual trait among potters?

Everyone that works in certain fields look the same, what is that about? Those are pretty mugs but all too thin. I like a chonky boi.
