The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, and Sofia Boutella is reviewed by Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast), and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).
Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_...
Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar (R) winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years-with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.

This movie made the '99 Mummy look like The Godfather. Every scene was so dark you could hardly see anything. Not funny, not exciting, not coherent when it had so much potential. The final score of The Dummy: 5.5/10.

There needs to be a critical evaluation among critics of the 1999 version w/Brendan Fraser. He really knew how to fill the action hero role. The soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith, the special effects, the acting and the cinematography were all amazing. Also Arnold Vosloo is such an underrated actor as well and absolutely killed the role of Imhotep. Great performances all around. Love it.

I got an idea. There was The Mummy:Animated Series Universal Studios did in the last decade. Why not restart that series and put it on Netflix? No instead they decided to do a rehash of a movie from an IP that actually worked. The animated series would have a lower cost then making a movie.

Alex Kurtzman is the reason why this blows I'm guessing. He and Roberto Orci have scripted all the shitty blockbuster sci-fi / fantasy films of the past 10 years. But thank god they aren't getting much work anymore and hiring Kurtzman as helmsman for his directorial debut on a Tom Cruise movie? Yeah... I hope Cruise and his scientology goons end his career once and for all.

The reason this sucks so hard is because the studio is so out of touch with what people want, and the licenses that they hold. I give these guys some credit... Warner Bros. said "We Need an EPIC Mummy movie." And they tried their best. Problem is that Mummy's, Wolfmen and Frankenstein's don't work on an EPIC scale. These creatures only work in tight spaces with a limited group of victims whom the audience has invested themselves in. No matter how many times the Wolfman takes Manhattan we are just not going to give a fuck. Werewolf in London worked so well because for 88 minutes there were only a small handful of people being terrorized, and these were people we cared about. Then at the end it spent 7 minutes destroying London and that shit was about as EPIC as we are going to allow these monsters to be.

It wasn't THAT damn bad. The special effects were awesome, the acting was very good and had some humor thrown in. All in all, I enjoyed it. I don't care that Cruise is a Scientologist or that he jumps on couches. I'm not thinking about actors' personal lives when I'm watching a movie no more than I'm thinking about an author's personal life when I'm reading a book unless it's an autobiography.

Well, I have NOT seen this movie and I was not going to until it comes out on Amazon Prime or Netflix or HBO, etc... However, one thing I will give Tom Cruise credit for is that he is a very physical actor STILL! Think about it he is in his 50's doing things many actors do not do in their 50's anymore. Once Actor comes to mind that was very active physically well into his 50's (and 60's) is Burt Lancaster. Watch some of Burt Lancaster's films of the 1960's and see what I mean. *'The Scalphunters'* is one that is a little known gem to see. (Around 1968 I think) Great casting all around in that film... So anyways Tom Cruise still has it physically and I give him credit for that.

Despite everyone shitting on this film I'm still going to see it because a 2.7 is completely unrealistic for this film as a rating if you've seen films like Dragonball evolution and gingerdead man. Or evil bong. Or Killjoy. Those films are what I think of when people give low ass scores like 1s and 2s. The Mummy cannot be a 2.7 that's just hating because everyone else hates it. The movie will be entertaining at least even if it's not a proper set up for this dark universe.

Loved the Russell Crowe scene, Sofia boutella, Tom cruise's fate in the film, but Jake Johnson ruins it I think. The comedy is just terrible.

Fucking ridiculous... these movies will all fail for the simplest of reasons. Marvel and D.C. have the market on big budget action. Classic horror is ALWAYS best when it is on a small/relatable scale. Nobody wants to see a F-ing Mummy destroy New York city. We MIGHT want to see our favorite actors and actresses trapped inside some catacombs with a truly horrifying Mummy though. Spend some money on your performers... Spend some money on your gore effects, and find a superb writer to creep the hell out of an audience on a Warner Brother's budget. When was the last time we had a "Serious, Hollywood, Scarefest?" Silence of the Lambs??? Meh, that movie was (ok) I guess. People want to see (Scary) Wolfman, not (EPIC) Wolfman. and this is why the modern versions of these classic horror films have failed so miserably.
