Our guest this week, Dr Sohail Hanif, argues that we need to reconnect with not just our relationship with our umma but also have to reorient our lives to live like the murabitun of the past, those who saw themselves as within a wider objective of thinking about deen and the umma and their part within this rubric. In this endeavour, to change our mentality, we have to reconfigure how we view some of the fundamental Islamic ideas of zakat, ummah and jihad. Are we in the west manning an outpost of this umma. And has Gaza taught us a wider lesson about reorienting our mentalities.
Dr Sohail is the National Zakat Foundation’s Chief Executive. Prior to this, he held the position of Lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College. He also was the Head of Sciences at Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. He has expertise in Islamic law, having studied extensively with traditional scholars, and holds a PhD from Oxford University.

Ya Muhammed Jaleel, may Allah reward you in this life and the next. Your channel has helped me find hope again. Works like these are extremely needed for our Ummah in these times. Is this the point in time where change happens? Is this the begin of our revival? Only Allah knows the outcome and we strive to be the vehicle for that. And that Allah may be pleased with our intentions and actions. Thank you Muhammed Jaleel may Allah be pleased with you. And if you see Sami again tell him to keep going, and that the youth stands next to him. ❤

Dear #TheThinkingMuslim, many thanks for bringing us guests that are so very knowledgeable and wise. Every week since I discovered it, I look forward to listen to this podcast- I particularly enjoyed the previous episode with Dr Yakoobi - as it always leave me full of hope and helps me to reflect on myself and my role in my own life and in that of my neighbors (family,friends colleagues, society at large). As I mentioned in previous comments, though I am a non-Muslim with some academic knowledge of Islam/Islamic history and culture, the majority of the subjects treated and the conclusions reached or the suggestions made do resonate with me, that is I largely agree with them. In fact, for the past month i have experienced the following: roughly for every time i found myself reflecting on a topic, that week’s podcast touched upon it! And I never heard anything banal or already known, but always very profound and honest considerations. Maybe, you may say, it’s God calling me towards Islam, I do not know, but I am thankful for this programme and for the speakers it hosts. One consideration I wanted to make is that, though as believers you may have an extra “gear” that make you more consequent in your beliefs-action, some of what Dr Hanif says about jihad has already been treated in secular communist thought, for example Ernesto Che Guevara once said “The true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality. […] Above all, always be capable of feeling deeply any injustice committed against anyone, anywhere in the world. This is the most beautiful quality in a revolutionary.” This is jihad. This is to struggle for the betterment of mankind and to do so from a position of love and not hatred. That is perhaps why what he says resonates deeply with myself and my beliefs even though I am not a Muslim. Thus everyone has a duty to perform jihad in their daily life so to improve life for all mankind. Having said that, I do have a few questions I hope you will be able to answer: 1) with regards to #Palestine, why is it that people less than 10 years ago were so keen in joining ISIS or those fighting against it, but no one and definitely no Muslim seems interested in joining the Palestinian (Islamic) Resistance to fight the Occupation on the ground today? Everyone is very concerned and talking on internet or demonstrating in the streets but I never heard of international brigades recruiting fighters to join the Palestinian Resistance (secular or religious as instead happened with the Kurds in Syria. Why is that? 2) with regards to #TheThinkingMuslim, since you are Uk based, have you considered doing a “live” event, like a conference or show on stage? I would really love to attend such an event! Why don’t you come to Edinburgh for the Fringe?! 3) Say I wanted to have my son learn about Islam, does he need to be of Muslim parents to attend Quran’s classes or can any(one) child enrol? (Again in the Uk/scotland). Thanks very much in advance and best wishes for your work ahead. Allah Kareem!

To have access to such information is so valuable alhamdulillah! It's so important in a time where the whole world seems to fall apart, especially for us as muslims as we see the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Gaza and the world's harsh reaction. Could you please do a part ll with brother Sohail? He's a great speaker, he did some lectures in Cambridge Mosque, they are very interesting as well masha'Allah. Your interviews are so amazing. I grew up with two Muslim and a Christian friend. We enjoyed each of our traditions and shared meals. Our Muslim community in South Africa is very involved in community feeding and housing humanitarian efforts. And Dr. Suliman from Gift of the Givers has been active in Gaza. As an apartheid survivor in South Africa, it's about understanding the mentality of the perpetrators...hence the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after apartheid. But what we see in Palestine is worse than what we experienced in South Africa (with all its horrors and losing my friends) Understand the violator.... .like we do with bullies at the school. Why do they do what they do. Like we try to understand why an abused wife who tolerated violence for decades, finally rebels and injures the husband. What are the dynamics? Why, why, why...then we uncover the actual problem, and can help resolve the conflict for all parties. In my podcast with Zionist soldier I'm beginning to unpack this in the hope of shaping a better future for Palestine and Israel. Thanks for your amazing work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJOveIyDl9WjgK8

All the Dr spoke of is true to the meaning of community - so much to hear and understand, i shall have to listen again and again, but from one listen i know that what he speaks of resonates with a core running through me which i have always been told is not typical... his words of explanation, example, rationale is of an innate common sense to me. Wonderful to hear, but i will listen again to see if i am hearing correctly. Thank you for your work here, in love and peace 🙏

Our Prophet Muhammad SAW rejected Judaism and Christianity as religion because the religion of God is one is the Abraham faith (tauhid ) and Moses (peace be upon him) and Isa (peace be upon him) They did not create a new religion they were to convey The revelations and carry out what was commanded in the holy book (torah and gospel). And we can see in the Al-Quran Al-Hujurat[49]13-18 that Definition Islam is not as a religion, but it means surrender. 👉 O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of God is the most righteous among you. God is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.˹Some of˺ the nomadic Arabs say, “We believe.” Say,(Muhammad PBUH),“You have not believed. But say, ‘We have submitted(Islam),’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey God and His Messenger ˹wholeheartedly˺,He will not discount anything from ˹the reward of˺ your deeds. God is truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”The ˹true˺ believers are only those who believe in God and His Messenger-never doubting-and strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of God. They are the ones true in faith.Say, “Do you inform God of your faith, when God ˹already˺ knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? And God has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.”They regard their acceptance of Islam as a favour to you.Tell ˹them,[Muhammad PBUH], “Do not regard your Islam as a favour to me. Rather, it is God Who has done you a favour by guiding you to the faith, if ˹indeed˺you are faithful. Surely God knows the unseen of the heavens and earth. And God is All-Seeing of what you do.”(Al-Quran Al-Hujurat[49]13-18) Say (Muhammad PBUH), “As for me, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, the straight religion, the faith of Abraham who was upright and was not of those who associate partners with God. Say, “My prayer, my offering, my life and my death are for God, the Lord of all the worlds. For Him there is no partner. And thus I have been commanded, and I am the first one to submit.”Say, “Should I seek a lord other than God while He is the Lord of everything? And nobody does anything but to his own account, and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return. Then He will let you know what you were disputing about.”It is He who made you the vicegerents of the earth and raised some of you in ranks over others, so that He may test you in what He has given you. Surely, your Lord is swift in punishing, and surely He is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.(Al-Quran Al-An'am[6]161-165) Say [Prophet] [to the Jews and Christians], ‘How can you argue with us about God when He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds belong to us, and yours to you. We devote ourselves entirely to Him. Do you claim that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants were all Jews or Christians?” Say, “Who is more knowledgeable: you or God?” Who does more wrong than those who hide the testimony they received from God? And God is never unaware of what you do. That was a community that had already gone before. For them is what they earned and for you is what you have earned. And you will not be accountable for what they have done.(Al-Quran Al-Baqarah,139-141) All men used to be a single faith. Then (after they differed in matters of faith), God sent prophets carrying good news and warning, and sent down with them the Book with Truth to judge between people in matters of their dispute. But it was no other than those to whom it (the Book) was given who, led by envy against each other, disputed it after the clear signs had come to them. Then God, by His will, guided those who believed to the truth over which they disputed; and God guides whom He wills to the straight path. (Al-Quran Al-Baqarah[2] 213)

Thank you for another insightful podcast - has me thinking :) and nodding my head in resonance. I have a question and some reflections (and this does not come from a place of judgement) Seeing as the Friday prayer is a prayer for men, I ask, why are women not included? (it seems to me it's more than a Friday thing, as far as men praying together and women praying separately) It feels to me that if the Prayer is Social/Unifying and if the Social is Political, (I 100% agree) then to integrate Women in the service would be more unifying. And if a practicing Muslim woman could help me understand this better that would be great. Also as a woman, do you feel less power socially and politically through a separate social prayer system? (ie, regarding community activism and organizing) I understand the role of protector/protection from the male view, but do you think this affects relationship in any way? Community and or personal? I appreciate this space and especially this podcast. Thank you. Also - jihad has a beautiful ring to it.

Friday prayer is compulsory for men and optional for women and men are strongly urged to play their other daily prayers in the mosque while for women it is permissible. The prayer at home for women helps to build the other pole of the community via a vis the mosque which are the Muslim households. Since women are generally the ones who look after children, the elderly and the household, it would be a great difficulty to leave them or get them ready to attend prayer five times a day. Allah Gives women their reward for her prayer at home like the men get their reward for joining the congregation. I enjoyed the interview too, really interesting.

Hmmm Of all the lectures i have heard, this really elaborates the simple reason why anyone falls in love with Islam- the demand that it shd have great answers for all the issues and problems we see ard. The next question is how each amd everyone shd be enciuraged to be involved, rather than just complaining. One question i wd like answered, is how we work with the xurrent nation states? When ppl talk of caliphate the stumbling block in s how can we go break these shackles down without demanding a personal sacrifice?

Jazak Allah khairan brother Jalal. These discussions are absolutely important. Great Kurdish scholar Said Nursi from the late Ottoman period he was asked about the future of Europe and Ottomans to which he replied that both are pregnant with the child of the opposite side and they will give birth to them. We saw the Ottomans giving birth to a secular state. Now it's the turn of Europe, inshallah. He saw the little signs 100 years ago. Your line of work gives us a stronger hope to anticipate it. Please invite Dr Colin Turner of Durham University to your podcast. He researched Risalei Nur of the abovementioned scholar Said Nursi and his faith renewal movement in Turkey. Said Nursi has a lot to offer since he lived through the collapse of Ottomans and he established a Islamic faith revival movement which is spread to all over the world.

Surely mankind is ungrateful to their Lord… “If We give people a taste of Our mercy then take it away from them, they become utterly desperate and ungrateful. But if We give them a taste of prosperity after being touched with adversity, they say: “My ills are gone” and become totally prideful and boastful.” (Quran 11:9-10) 🤍

The inclusion of a holistic understanding of Jihad in this topic from a scholar with a non-Salafi/Wahhabi-influenced background was amazingly refreshing and welcome. However, having lived for some years now in Muslim majority lands, I am concerned at how the deteriorating conditions here are directly linked to globalization - an intrinsically exploitative, corporatist global economic/political system. I wonder if the classical shafi’i jurists mentioned as having permitted Muslims to move to non-Muslim lands and permanently settle there would have done so in the global political and economic environment of the 20th and 21st centuries concerning Muslim economic migration to the West. The world was a very different place back when they were giving their rulings! And should we cling to minority opinions on issues such as this? This began as a promising, eloquent, very personal expression of a realization that a deep understanding of classical Islam urges us to reclaim and truly own all aspects of our tradition. I think there may be more scholarship and thought needed before final conclusions on practical implications are reached.

Jihad is a war against tyranny against freedom... the Quran said la ikraha fiddeen... there is no compulsion in the teaching of Islam and all mankind are guaranteed freedom by their lord including the freedom to believe in Him or not... therefore a Muslim must fight tyranny whereever they maybe,, be against their own fellow Muslims if those Muslims force others to convert to Islam...

False, once more western liberalism has infected deep aspects and virtues of Islam. It's not about Freedom, it's about submission to Allah's will. A heretic or apostate can be "free" selfishly. Are you now going to tell me that the conquests of the Rashiduns were against Islam?

It is not only Jihad ,because there are different froms of Jihad. Muslims must be United and established the Khalifaat that is the Command of Allah Almighty in His Holy Quran and Sunna of the Holy prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu alayhi wa ala aalihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, and make Alliances with those who don't hate Muslims, and that is not the Western Zionist Judeo-Christian unholy alliances. Muslim must built themselves up militarily , economically , socially etc, and then when Muslims are doing Jihad , like what is happening in Gaza ,the Muslims can continue to be a strong resistance against the Western Zionist Judeo-Christian unholy alliances. But now Muslims must go to the very same Zionist Judeo-Christian unholy alliances who has established the UN, ICJ, VN , USA ,UK, etc begging them for help. They will never be in fevor of Muslims. Shaykh Imran Hosein has written his very important book "Jerusalem in the Quran" some 20 years ago and until today Islamic scholars has not respond to his book adequately.. When will the Islamic so-called Arabs and non-Arabs scholars , political leadership, Royals, and Muslims wakeup ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/laCQiYFnl5l6Zrssi=GT2SJ_6dPEkYNHHo kzbin.info/www/bejne/raWvpGiofMx0e7ssi=i1bZfaExZj8F7JRc kzbin.info/www/bejne/bam8hnmAeal2i7Msi=XZnRIN6OTD38q_Z2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmmTdWeIm7yXh5Ysi=_Q7fGzq7QnD9rywb kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqqZq52KrKqJprssi=AmJ6KS-rSrNWTgp7 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXrbdGyrZZKtqKMsi=Z4mQkW7Wf3GySUZU

Christians also are not to fight physical wars. Jesus taught to turn the other cheek, to love our neighbors, i.e.ALL humans as we love ourselves and to love even our very enemies. If Christians followed the teachings of Jesus Christ, Muslims follow the Q’ran, and Jews the Torah, where they were taught by God through his prophets to treat strangers with much kindness, what truly beautiful and peaceful life we would have.

Why dont my brothers; particularly the host Jalauddin Patel, ex leader of now banned UK terror outfit Hizb-ul Tahrir, give up the comfort and luxuries of living in the Democratic and Secularr values and move over to a truly Islamic state (may I suggest Afghanistan) before influencing ordinary peaceful (but gullible) Muslim citizens in UK and West to strive for a Caliphate to better understand firsthand the quality of life under a Sharia stste. This can have dire consequences for them and those around them as is clear from ISIS experiment about which people in general are very sensitive.
@banabozo

The conversation seems to have touched some deep spot, isnt it. By the way ISIS was never representative of Islam, who knows them better than they created and planted. As for yourself , how about you travel to a truly secular land like the Israel and India for that matter, truly safe and peaceful places.
@deepsareen1
@deepsareen1 2 ай бұрын
@@banabozo It is not for anyone to say what ISIS represented; the right belongs to ISIS, and they claim it is Islam, and back it up by doing everything (in the Name of Islam) and quote the scriptures. As it happens I have lived / travelled and while they may not be my ultimate choices on the subject; are certainly better than at very minimum Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Djibouti, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Palestine, Gambia, Comoros, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Iraq, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Lebanon, Mali, Egypt, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Uganda, Yemen; 35 out of 50 or so Muslim majority countries Yes such conversations do stir my pity on the acute blindness of Religious Ideologues (most commonly afflicting Islamists) to see everything from Religion’s POV and their need to infect the whole world.
