Dubbed as the "Hathahaters," a group of anti-fans emerged online, targeting the actress with unwarranted hate and disdain.This video explores the curious phenomenon surrounding Anne Hathaway's vilification and the rise of the "Hathahater" movement.

@dominicwalker1899

An apparent reason: hollywood is a fake, corporate, narcissistic conglomerate which feeds propoganda, advertising and 'entertainment' to the masses. The female celebrities are chosen every 10 years to influence the culture; the same thing is happening to Zendaya right now - her career, acting, "iconic look" is entirely fake. We are "meant" to like her - to want to be her; but few want to and few can. Hence the push back. People will "hate" on what they are "meant" to love and adore - especially when they didn't chose it, and they don't have a choice

This is the real original reason behind the hate. It's not because she's a pretty, successful girl who reached epic levels of fame like a lot of people think. It has nothing to do with misogyny. People thought she came off as a smug know-it-all, talking down to people and treating others as "less," that she was a serious actress while others weren't. I never agreed with the hate, but in watching her interviews, you really can see how people feel that way.

@@pearlosibu exactly! I feel like the video touches on but misses the mark on the Hathaway hate. I never cared, or understood it until I watched this video. Subconsciously, most of us understand that perfection is sinister. The flawlessness is a mask. So the audience really doesn't know her. People don't hate her perfection or Lawrence's too authentic act. They're both being vilified for putting up a mask as different as these masks are. It just took the idiots longer to spot how fake the Lawrence shtick was.

@@tropistan7735exactly. I found this video too simplistic as well as victim-y. Oooh, people hate her pretty privilege. No. She’s fake. And our internal radar spots that. Beyond that, though, she is part of the woke mob that spouts inauthentic nonsense in the order of “kindness/empathy/performative activism/girlboss/victim of male oppression.” But this movie (and comments) were too stupid for me to bother. Let me point you to Martin Decoder. He does incredible work with speech analysis, pointing out the stuff I’ve mentioned above and has at least two videos on Anne Hathaway specifically. It’s such an eye opener. She’s incredibly fake and we must trust our instincts. Privileged white women playing victim and championing the cause of disenfranchised and underprivileged people as well as aligning themselves as part of the group is really disgusting. White women are all aboard this train because they cannot play race or lgbtq and know they cannot do those fat activism games either. What’s left? The patriarchyyyyyyyy. The only person left to fend for themselves is the white man. He better become trans or just get used to being hated. So all Hollywood actresses have joined.

Makes sense why she was constantly compared to Jennifer Lawrence at the time, who was much more loved at the time for how "real" she was. Looking for those who are imperfect, and therefore relatable. On the other hand, other cultures value being put together or classiness.

The showboating, overconfident, condescending villains of wrestling are written that way because people will naturally despise them as heels. It works every time, none better than Ric Flair whose whole persona is gloating about how much richer and better he is than you.

Alexis de Tocqueville describes this well in his book, "Democracy in America". There is a video summarizing his philosophy on the youtube channel "School of Life". Rising above the masses and elevating yourself in anyway will always come at the cost of offsetting other people's insecurities. That is why they turned on Jennifer Lawrence eventually. (no matter how relatable she seemed) That is why people obsess over bringing down celebrities, to feel better about themselves. Like you said, it explains the need for billionaires and celebrities to make themselves look normal especially now that relatability marketing is the in thing. The MET Gala aftermath and the blocking of celebrities on tiktok is proof of that.

A possible reason is that the media tells us we're "meant to love" certain celebrities (e.g. zendaya) or herald them as the perfect ideal to strive towards; when in reality few of us do and we can sense their career, looks and media hype is artificial. The people that got fired because of twitter shenanigans would disagree. It might not be a real place but it has real life consequences, maybe not to Chappelle because he has the privilege to not lose shit but that’s an outlier. In this videos itself, Donna mentionned how producers and directors preferred not to cast Anne at some point for fear of movies not doing great with her in them, that’s a real life consequence for online nonsense

It’s a similar concept to very popular and aesthetically appealing and conventionally very attractive people talk about how “awkward” they were while growing up. The average person sees that and thinks “yeah, right” with an eye roll and whatever comments they have. I don’t have a problem with Anne or Jennifer. Funny thing is, I haven’t heard similar things about Julia Roberts. She has a giant mouth/smile too, similar features and personality, etc yet she’s been seen as “America’s sweetheart” for decades

I tried to like Anne Hathaway, I really did. However, what doesn't seat well with me has nothing to do with her appearing perfect in and out of camera. It is about her persona on interviews or whenever she interacts with people on camera. She always speaks in a condescending way, like patronizing whoever is speaking to her (in a respectful manner and trying to make her look relatable) which comes as inauthentic and performative. Nothing wrong with being good enough 24/7 (she definitely lacks Jennifer Lawrence early carrier acting chops) but there's certain quality to her speech, voice tone, gaze and body language that gives me entitled and stuck up.

I remember being told in high school I was “just too nice” and they said someone can’t be that genuine all the time…I remember snarking back with “ok, I guess I’ll make fun of you more” - this was with a fellow student I considered a childhood friend from growing up with them through elementary and middle school. Eventually when I ran into that same person when visiting their college one party weekend, I joked with them about what they said about me being “too nice” in high school. They embarrassingly laughed and said “yea, idk why I was such a hater to something like that”

I think she’s very pretty and should lean more into playing evil or maniacal characters, she isn’t annoying when she’s being evil bc that actually feels fun for her. When she’s pretending to be sincere it just makes me feel like my socks are wet Going so far as to make hating Anne a part of your personality is a bit much I think Tom Hanks is a good example of a perfect person we like.

When u hate or dislike something in another person it's something your insecure about on the inside. And if even when u don't hate the person something about them still irks you the wrong way, whatever that is, is an unhealed part of yourself. I've had that feeling with Ariana Grande since I was little. I think it's because she wasn't actually as sweet as she pretended to be. & perhaps with Anna Hathaway it's because everyone is getting the vibe that she is not truly happy & cheerful as she is trying to appear. To me, I've always loved Anne Hathaway & she doesn't annoy me. And i see the subtle fakeness of her happiness as well but it doesn't irk or annoy me, It just makes me empathetic. She's just doing her best.

I think you just solved my conundrum of why I've messed up irrationally during auditions. I subconsciously picked up on this aspect of human nature, and have tried to make myself smaller, even in places where one might think the expectation is to be bigger. I've noticed that my talents are more comfortable shining in certain environments over others. It's interesting, sometimes humans expect each other to be perfect, and some other times they find that perfection to be offensive.

Okay, I was one of those people who HATED Anne Hathaway. Yeeeeah, it was true. I still don't find her appealing. It was only about her being rude, arrogant, "theatrical" and FAKE, FAKE like hell. You see, when you look at another person and you feel their energy, their attitude. Anne Hathaway was just not who she pretended to be. That's all. People felt that and she got what she got. I never wrote a bad comment on her profile or sth, i'm not like that. 1. She had a sleek, polished glam image after The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada 2. So when she played Fantine in Les Mis, it struck some as cosplaying the downtrodden while being a "tryhard" for an Oscar bid 3. She does at times exude a Rachel Berry / Lea Michele energy in interviews 4. She was a "too perfect" , super skinny, "regulation hottie" when people like Adele, Meghan Trainor, and Rebel Wilson were hitting their stride, being recognized for talent, as opposed to conforming to conventional Hollywood standards. Perhaps there was an unspoken (and undeserved) backlash from this shift. 5. At an awards show, she corrected the spelling of her name. "Ann with an E" This was giving drunken Reese Witherspoon "Do you know who I am?" but in a more bubbling under-the-surface, subtle way. It rubbed some people the wrong way, including me. Then the press and social media piled on. I didn't "hate" her and still watched movies with her in them, but didn't care for her off-screen life for a good number of years. Compare this to the John Travolta incident at the Oscars during which he introduced Idina Menzel as "Adele Nazeem" and how she handled it - she rolled with the punches. She went on stage and nailed her performance without missing a beat. She never brought up how she was slighted, unless journos asked her directly, and she answered graciously without talking trash about Travolta. In fact, the incident went viral and seemed to boost Idina's career profile. 6. Also, there were other actresses taking over Hollywood at the time, like Jennifer Lawrence who worked hard to push a more "relatable" persona to the public, doing things like falling up stairs while wearing a fancy gown.

I am on the fence about her, however, one of my favorite movies of all time is “the devil wears Prada”. It’s one of those movies I consider “comfort movies”, put it on and escape. What made me dislike her public image was how rehearsed all of her interviews were, she came off unauthentic. She didn’t seem perfect, she came off as disingenuous. With that said I didn’t go online and bash her - I just rolled my eyes and stayed away from her interviews online.

I think one reason some people didn't like her is because she didn't try to hide that she was out to further her career. She didn't pretend to be afraid of or shocked by success. This can make some members of the public feel less in control because the successful woman seems to pick herself instead of being picked by them. Does that make sense?
