so some one cuts in line putting every one who is waiting to shame by disrespecting them ,then no one is supposed to say anything to him so he won't be embarrassed? i call bull sh.t . AND the pinay have absolutely no problem making up complete lies about other people and spreading through gossip. no worry about hurting a person's character that way . so backstabbing is ok but face to face no . got it .

Ha. Occasionally, I get the jerk trying to cut in line. I try to stop them, but it's the idiot cashier that takes the cutter, despite knowing they're cutting. The cashier is complicit in this "walang hiya" concept. I never cut in line. In fact, where I'm from, I would let people with less stuff in front. So, by principle, I despise somebody who does it without permission. I don't even bother to be polite anymore since cutting is already permitted. That's a flawed system.

after 3 years of living in the philippines, and being married to a filipina, i have learned that i am a "loud foreigner", lol, so out of respect of my wife and family i keep my mouth shut in public and only complain privately with my wife and family, however just recently, my wife asked me to buy puto for her papa, when i returned to the car with the puto, my wife asked how much it costed, when i told her it was 20 pesos each, she got angry and told me that it should only cost 10 php each and that she wanted me to go back and "shout-shout" at the lady for charging me double price (foreigner price). which was a huge surprise that she wanted me to publicly shout at a vendor, so i go back to the lady and shout at her and demand my money back, causing quite a stir, although my wife told me to do it and stood behind my actions, the following day the story had quickly spread all thru the area, and i was told that i was "trending". so i suppose now i am a famous bad man. lol

I agree; back in the service I spent about four months in olongapo. I experienced this difference in cultures a couple of times. I remember taking my girlfriend out to the movies 🍿. I believe that she knew people who were in the theater and they were only being friendly, but they were throwing individual pieces of popcorn 🍿 at her/us. I just thought we were being harassed. I stood up and asked who was doing it. I was visibly annoyed 😠 and I’m sure I was willing to take up for us. She sank down into her chair like she wanted to disappear 🫥. I was confused. A western woman 👩 would have been proud of her boyfriend defending her, even if she had to explain to him that she knew the people and they weren’t being rude. She did neither. She didn’t explain anything nor feel admiration. She felt embarrassed. In the states allowing the harassment would’ve been disgraceful. The second incident was similar. I was unaware of the- I guess “Asian “ custom of throwing water 💦 at the windows 🪟 of a bus 🚌 or train 🚂 as it leaves on a trip. We took a bus 🚌 somewhere and when someone through water 💦 through the window 🪟 I stood up wet and angry 😤 and loud. Lol. She sank down into her seat again but that time she grabbed my arm with two hands and tried to let me know to sit down. It’s a difference in culture for sure. Neither is better; they’re just different. That four months was wonderful. I love 💗 Filipinos. I sure enjoyed my time there. The best people.

Even after 3 years I still run into issues sometimes. I am an honor based person. My main issue with the losing face thing is that for you to be honorable you need to act honorable. Yes i try to never bring stuff up in public, but if someone is acting like an ass on public they are asking to be shamed in public is my mentality, something I have to force myself not to do. My wife has talked to me about this but it was not as clear to me as when you said it. It clears so things up. Thank you.
@simontmn

I've heard there is a difference between Western (esp NW European) 'guilt' honour, which requires actual honourable behaviour, and Eastern 'face' honour, the shame culture which does not have an internal aspect on behaviour - it's not how you behave, it's about how others treat you.

LOL, No shyness from my wife. We went to Henry's, and she ordered the Salmon. Waiter said we are out; I can get you tuna. She stood up and said, NOPE! No salmon no eat and walked out. The waiter stared at me, and I looked at him and said... I guess you can see she doesn't like Tuna and got up and left. And thanks to her the neighbors know not to party past midnight in the neighborhood, every time they used to She would go out and yell, MY HUSBAND IS TRYING TO SLEEP, STOP THAT AWFULL SINGING. After a couple of months, we are all cool now with the neighbors. Now if we can just take care of that damn rooster.

That is why I would never want to be in Philippines. I did try to be reasonable polite and agreeable long ago. People will see it as a weakness. Its not the way it should be but that is the way it is. And someone who is polite in every situation is also someone who will not have your back. if someone is playing loud music once or twice you can let it go but if they do it all the time and you can't fall asleep then you have every right to ask them to knock it off. And if someone doesn't like you wanting to have a peaceful sleep because it is a disruption of their apathy its their problem. centuries ago people of different nations religions and races were considered disruption and we all know how thing like that ended. if I asked someone to not play loud music i would feel little bit weird about it. and in a back of my mind I would have a tiny voice that maybe it was impolite of me to do so. But that is because there was a time when I naturally wanted to avoid confrontation and was thought to be that way as well. Never again. I'm considered pretty hateful right now. But in Philippines I would be a lord of hatred. Which would be perfectly fine. In some circumstances anger is a correct response. And too much apathy can lead to psychopathy. I might be rude and get angry easily but that is better than being careless about everything and everyone because if you don't have emotional attachment to anything that also means less empathy. and someone like that might not necessarily go out of their way to hurt you (although some of them will it depends on other factors of their personality) but if it is convenient for them they will. and they will certainly not help you if you need help.

this would be something i would have to really, really, work on. i hold open doors for anyone, young, old, man, woman, etc. if i have a lot of items in a checkout, someone behind, or even a couple people behind, have few or one, i let them ahead. but letting other peoples rudeness just "slide by", well, i guess i would have to pick my battles, so to speak. if i was with my g/f and or her family, i would bite my tongue, for the most part, if i already knew that, "speaking out" at times is just not the right course of action. but, given i am 62, i might have my "Elder superiority" on my side,, hahahahaha.. love hearing so much about real world experiences in the Philippines..

Pea, you did a great job with this subject! 🙂 For men that have never traveled outside their western country's borders, and have an airline ticket in hand for the Philippines soon after the new year, don't think that just because the Philippines is for the most part, an English speaking country, that you are going to know enough to communicate effectively. Research about the culture, customs, and social behaviors there... It is literally the difference between an immersive, positive experience, and an empty, negative one.... As far as the deeper message you cloaked in your subject about the "shy" Filapina... Well, your KZbin catalog is full of valuable insight demonstrating that Filapinas are anything but "shy" when they are made to feel protected, comfortable, and respected by a man. I would highly recommend the men getting ready to go over there with the intention of finding a Filapina for a lifelong partner, but know nothing about them, dig into Pea's videos! You won't be disappointed when it's time to apply that valuable, in depth knowledge in person! 🙂

Thanks for giving us your channel. I've been over here in Cebu City since PH opened up. The attitude you describe here actually makes me sad for the people of the Philippines. My best example is how security guards seriously won't let you walk out the entrance. Or in the exit, even though there might be next to no one around and it makes no difference. I've been astounded by it. But a wise American can use it to their advantage. I'm technically a senior over 65, but I would never jump ahead in a line at the supermarket. But I do now routinely since fully comprehending the "rule" in the Senior Priority line. I look much younger, so I almost always hack off younger filipinas. They will sometimes just walk away from the line Senior Priority line and get in some other line after I jump to the front. My belief is that this willingness to blindly follow rules contributes to the lack of entrepreneurship here. People don't think in terms of starting a new business or innovating because that inherently involves thinking outside the box. Anyway. One of my great victories was on Christmas Eve when my wife needed to buy some groceries for the feast I did not know was tradition here. We went to the Metro and unfortunately arrived just minutes after they had closed. The entrance was closed off by a big metal door. But we go there regularly so I VERY kindly was asking the guard if he would let us in. He loves us. We just had a baby and I've even shown him pictures. So after him saying "no" for a few minutes (even though the store was still full of customers cause the closing announcement had literally just been made), and the security guard had turned away two other customers, he looked at us and said, "go ahead". It was almost like he was committing a crime. I thanked him immensely when we came out still ahead of many other customers still shopping. But I have a question. Would it have been inappropriate for me to give him a hundred peso bill or something? I thought about that the whole time my wife was purchasing her short list of groceries. I didn't want to embarrass him nor make it look like a corrupt guard. At the same time, I wanted to do something for him cause I could see that it was a big deal for him to let us in "against" the rules. What would you have done for a security guard who broke the rules for you?
@TheFilipinaPea
@TheFilipinaPea Жыл бұрын
You actually considered walking IN the OUT door? Oh my gosh, you’re brave! Hahahahaha Yes, that’s really how ridiculous it is here 🤣 Giving him 100 pesos is never wrong, in my book - he profited. the store profited, and you hit what you wanted. Talk about a victimless crime 👍🤣

I loved this video, but it leaves me with the question of how does one get disrupters (line cutters, obnoxiously loud party givers, etc.) to correct their actions. Afterall, they don't seem to be concerned about their hiyah. What would happen if I simply cut back in front of them? Who would be the "bad" person me or them?

I really like how you contrast Eastern and Western notions of cultural conformity. Americans have been caught up in the rat race for so long as our traditional family structures have been eroded and even mocked or chastised by an increasingly insane populace. I once heard that "we are not raising children, we are raising future adults". Based on the overwhelming majority of American youth being a bunch of selfish, whining, degenerate, and entitled turds; I just do not have much hope for America's future. America is on it's way out, but it is nice to see pockets of sanity left in the world and I hope family structures will remain solid in the Philippines, thank you.

While there is definitely value in the western way of being independent and questioning things and going against our elders when we know something is incorrect, I strongly believe that if the Philippines began to embrace this way of living, it would be the first domino falling in a line that would lead to the destruction of everything that makes the Philippines unique and precious in this world. Westernization is a cancer camouflaged by money and prosperity...it's very alluring. But while it fills your banks with money and your cities with skyscrapers, it drains the soul of your people and nation. In no time at all, you've joined the Borg collective, a nation of drones, with a culture that now only exists in history books and gift shops. People walking the streets with frowns and distrust, suicide rates tripling, depression and mental illness becoming the norm instead of the exception. Don't become America 2.0. Stay who you are, or lose your soul.

My us parents were older and back then I damn better respect my elders or I would have gotten my mouth smacked. Today seniors r treated as just getting in the way of the younger generation; Here that have senior lines at the grocery stores which is nice, good manners are what a lot of ex-pats like about Filipinas. The way Filipinas act is why that most western men like Filipinas over western feminist. I personally don't want Ne in a thong bikini out in public. No, she has never owned a bikini because she was raised not to expose her body publicly. I am not the public.

Great information again pea. My friend’s son that I live with here in the Philippines has his girlfriend that comes over goes straight to his room if I’m here and won’t come out unless they are leaving. He tells me she is shy is why and now to the point of never coming over at all. Even though I’m older than both of them put together, I still try to be a nice as I can and treat her with respect but if she sees me downstairs she will have him not stop and take her straight home. Even though he lives here he spends 75% of his time at her place and she never comes here now. Anymore information to help make it even a little bit better would help because I think he wants to marry her after she graduates university.

I just experienced my first Christmas here and I’m married and we had my wife’s sister and sisters daughter over and I had to take the doorbell off our gate a couple days before Christmas because people were ringing it several times and hour and wouldn’t leave our gate until my wife gave them money. We had to leave the house during the day to avoid the groups of nonstop carolers. After Christmas my wife said it was okay to put the doorbell back so I did but now I’ve heard several groups of people walking by singing Christmas songs but changing the words to things like cheap Charlie

I've never quite understood why, when someone plays loud music at 3 or 4 in the morning, and someone else asks that person to stop, why the "partykiller" is the bad guy, when the original infraction was rudeness and thoughtlessness on the part of party dude... 🤔 ...Gotta love alcohol culture... 😒 ...Anyway, this is one of those videos Pea that blows me away. You are so concise with your sociological insights that you really should be teaching at university. Or TED talks. Or something... 😃 ...Constructive criticism is a necessary part of cultural and especially technological evolution. If one can't point out a problem because of hiya fear, then how is that potential - or real - problem supposed to get fixed? A well-schooled Westerner will be adept at the art form of constructive critique. The idea is to offer it framed in respect and in the spirit of helping - kinda like if you slap someone in the face with a velvet glove, it's so soft they think you're caressing them... 😃 ...Your cockpit example was spot on!...Have a Happy New Year, Pea!... 😉
