Why they don’t use DirecTV satellites to also offer satellite Internet and phone service is clearly beyond me. AT&T has the infrastructure but isn’t using it, and I say this as the son of a former 30-year AT&T employee.

@@kennystrawnmusic One, those satellites only really support downstream data flow. Two, those satellites are in geostationary orbit. The way satellite internet works is you send a signal up, its relayed to an unlink center and then back. The total distance is like 88,000 miles. Even at the speed of light, that trip takes a good portion of a second. Pings anywhere from 250 to 1000 milliseconds. Lastly, directv doesn't own all its own satellites. Ecosphere, the parent company of dish network, owns a good portion of them. The fastest way to do things in with a wire. I say this as a former technician of AT&T, Dish Network, and Spectrum, having installed and repaired coax, twisted pair, satellite, and fiber optic based internet systems.

One of the big things is the use of TDD instead of FDD communications which makes much better use of the available bandwidth and gives higher throughput. Our company was testing a 5G mmWave Verizon system in Las Vegas and was easily getting 1.6 plus gigabit download speeds. People also ask why the drive to such ridiculously high bandwidth systems like this? Well for starters when lots of people share a common resource, having super fast download speeds helps reduce the latency to ALL the users, which opens up new technologies like realtime telepresence and robotic control to name a couple.

Awesome video! Really good explanations. One thing I wanted to say that I find a lot of people assume, the higher frequency is not the sole reason why data speeds are faster. There is just more bandwidth available that can be used due to how things are split up. In theory, if you had the entire 100MHz bandwidth of low band 600 MHz, you would get the same data speeds as 100 MHz of C-Band.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 2 жыл бұрын
The higher frequency is _not at all_ the reason for more throughput! RF bandwidth is the _only_ consideration for throughput. The frequency itself can affect propagation, but that's line of sight for all the cellular spectrum. Before cellular, C-band was regularly used for distances of 22,300 miles, and S-band around 2 GHz was used to carry signals to the moon and back. It's the Ka-band signals that have problems with propagation, being unable to pass through windows, and experiencing significant fading in bad weather. Other than that, one MHz is the same as another when it comes to data throughput.
@AndrewMackoul
@AndrewMackoul 2 жыл бұрын
@@StringerNews1 isn't that what I said? I probably should have been more clear.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewMackoul yes, that's what you said. But you did qualify it a little. I wanted to point out that there's no basis to believe that higher frequencies somehow carry more information. Bandwidth and SNR are the limiting factors.
@grn1
@grn1 2 жыл бұрын
I presume you know at least some of this but for others reading these comments it may be confusing. Frequency does have an effect on throughput (usually called bandwidth though technically different) and more importantly latency. Modern cell phones actually use a very complex method of encoding data that combines frequency modulation (FM), amplitude modulation (AM), compression techniques, and more. With amplitude modulation the value of data is determined by the relative amplitude or strength of the wave when it arrives. Frequency modulation sends different values by sending different frequencies within a range, this range is the actual bandwidth but doesn't determine the throughput by itself. These are the same AM and FM found on radios but combined in a clever but also (honestly) very confusing manner that allows for much more data to be sent while also accounting for errors caused by interference. Regardless of what type of modulation is used the values per second is directly determined by the frequency. For example 1 GHz sends 1 billion signals per second while 2 GHz sends 2 billion signals per second, the actual bit rate depends on how those signals are modulated/interpreted. Lower frequencies can get the same amount of data out in the same amount of time (on average) by increasing the size of the bands (the bandwidth) to compensate for the losses caused by the signals literally being sent at a lower speed but the latency of the signal, that is how long it takes to send 1 signal, will still be lower. For most people and most use cases the latency in the mid-range bands will be acceptable while nationwide bands (those that can send signals 20 miles) will have a noticeable lag especially for things like video calls or online games.

You forgot to mention the conflict between the FCC and FAA over radio altimeter interference. Radio altimeters use radar to determine how high aircraft are off the ground when on approach or on departure from an airport, and when their readings are disrupted they can negatively affect auto-throttle systems. This has been a major factor in plane crashes before - Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 is a case in point. One of the side effects of this of course is that C-band coverage is banned on approach paths - so if you’re within range of an airport you might need to wait a bit longer.

@@thetechlibrarian AT&T and Verizon recently turned on their C-band 5G networks after months of dispute with the airlines and FAA. And, knock on wood, so far we've seen neither major flight disruptions nor any danger to air safety. After two years of AT&T's and Verizon's "nationwide 5G" networks feeling much like 4G, C-band could finally majorly multiply speeds. But what is C-band, and what does it mean for 5G? Do you need a C-band phone? Is C-band a new frequency? Should you be scared of C-band? We can explain. Recovering the Satellites According to wireless testing firm Rohde and Schwarz, the C-band is all frequencies between 4 and 8GHz. When US wireless geeks talk about C-band, though, they're talking about 3.7 to 4.2GHz-and specifically, in this case, the range from 3.7 to 3.98GHz. This frequency had been used for satellite TV since the 1970s, but as C-band satellite reception requires "big, ugly dishes" up to 10 feet in diameter, it got largely replaced by more flexible systems with smaller dishes on the Ku band, such as Dish and DirecTV. C-band is currently used for the "satellite downlink" for broadcast television distribution. With more advanced methods of digital encoding than they had in the 1970s, the satellite companies can now "repack" their broadcasts into the upper portion of the C-band, leaving the lower portion available. And yes C band does depend on line of sight.

So I found out a few weeks back that (at least on android) you can download apps that force your phone to connect to specific bands automatically. So I forced my phone to use the ATT mid-range bands exclusively and no joke I was getting 40 mbps *on LTE!* Had to disable 5G to do it (something many carriers won't let you do out of the box without installing third party apps or rooting) but honestly don't see the point anymore if I can get 40 mbps on just LTE alone. For those wanting the app, apparently it works differently with different manufacturers and carriers so unfortunately there is no one size fits all app. Also I had to re select the bands again after my phone updated. For my samsung s20 fe 5g i used samsung band selector, but you're going to have to look up an app for your specific phone. You may have to root for all I know... Also for those commenting that this is built into android already, yes it is, its just that many carriers lock you out of changing those settings, including ATT.

Incidentally, long before satellites, C band was used for terrestrial microwave links, usually by the phone company. However, that has largely, if not entirely, been replaced by fibre. Also, several years ago, some people would directly receive C band television signals, though that was not the intended purpose.

As a satellite TV user, I am FURIOUS. Satellite TV basically uses 2 bands. C band is 3.7 to 4.2ghz (total 0.5ghz) And Ku band is 10.7ghz to 12.75ghz (total 2ghz) The more spacious ku band is used by dth companies which make us pay to watch ad riddled television, And the narrow C-band mostly has free channels. And now they want to make the already narrow C-band even narrower??? That would mean they need to use more satellites to spread out the channels. Which wouldn't affect Cable TV operators because they can afford to use more hardware. But for us home users, it'll get crazy expensive to tune multiple different satellites to get all the channels we need!!!

As a long-time Verizon customer that switched to T-Mobile, let me assure the listening audience that T-Mobile is trashhhhhh. That “5GUC” symbol appears all of the time when I am literally out in the suburbs and sometimes even in the woods/sticks/bfe. I laughed the first few times I noticed this. Eg At my house I will frequently see two bars of 5GUC! I live 30 minutes south of the perimeter from Atlanta in the almost-sticks - there is NO mmWave tech here - and frequently when I see that I have a medium to strong 5G or 5GUC signal, my phone (iPhone 12 max pro AND an LG V60) simply won’t work at all. I can’t wait to switch back to Verizon but all these carriers are traaash. If anything, it seems like AT&T might be the most honest of the three - owning the spectrum doesn’t mean shit until you have the hardware to push it out; perhaps AT&T is wholly unconcerned with this sleight-of-hand nonsense and is saving its money….. probably planning on renting whatever spectrum/equip they need (usually from Verizon) to get whenever the tech is truly mainstream, just as everyone did with 4G My personal opinion is this 5G stuff is bullshit - most of the time when you see 5G, it’s some supposedly sped up version of 4G LTE. I know the technology well and I know it’s limitations; primarily the distance issue - this is why TRUE 5g is limited to dense urban areas - to cover the areas that are currently covered by 4G LTE, it would take a ridiculous amount of towers and the tinfoil hat crowd would lose their fucking minds. Not to mention massive $$$$$$$$ - which means this shit isn’t going mainstream until they somehow con the American public into paying for it for them, as our corporate social welfare structure is apt to allow.

According to Mentour Pilot, a channel covering airplane issues and air accident investigations, airport uses some frequencies around 4GHz resulting the bands C3 and C4 (above 3,7GHz) will not be allowed to be used around Airports. (In Europe frequencies above 3.7 have not been given to Cellular phone providers) 🐐🐣☃️😀🌞

I don't think we will see mmWav until they incorporate it into consumer internet, Wouters. But in Canada, we will be deploying 6G before we see mwah, so until after 2030!

Currently watching this video over C-Band n78. It‘s definitely way better than mmWave and has around half of the speeds. TDD is something new for Europe, but we began rolling out C-Band before the US. The propagation issues mmWave has are there with C-Band, but I‘m currently in a building and I have 3 bars and 256QAM. The connection is reliable. So I believe, C-Band will bring big changes (in Germany we too are currently really starting to roll out n78).

In Canada, we are still years behind in Rolling out 5G. I don't think we will see C-Band anywhere in Canada for the next decade. Our government is still fretting over announcing a public ban of Huawei. We still have a lot of Huawei equipment that needs to be replaced in the core network and the government is not funding its replacement.

I'm hornswoggled that you did not cover the topic that is giving the aviation community fits, and is annoying the carriers: The potential interference with radio altimeters from the new 5G bands. The issue has the FCC and FAA at loggerheads, and is only slowly being resolved. As far as I can tell, the problem arises primarily because the altimeter designers allowed their signals to schmooze well out of their assigned bands, but they nevertheless fear that other signals in the schmooze zone will jam the devices. This seems more important than a chapter and verse on who will operate where.

Dude I love your videos because it's easy to focus on because sometimes I need to know something or just want to know something and sometimes you just don't want to sit through it but because the way you talk like the speed and the cadence and everything it's just like in an instant the video is done and you know everything even your sponsors sections are great and the way you pop up things on the screen are perfect to help explanations and you don't ramble off either losing focus keep it up man your vids are great 👍 Not to mention all your vids are bangers also you got me with one of you old fake vids but it got me into your channel
