The only problem is... bottles can roll from the passenger side under the drivers feet. In this car you can't throw anything into the passenger well

@@Robert-cu9bm true, however that would be a projectile hazard in an accident. Ideally you need a storage basket in any car not loose items on floors or seats.

Tommy made a great point. So many reviewers and members of the general public don't give Kia and Hyundai credit. They still see them as the makers of tinny rattleboxes that they were two decades ago. They are now two of the leading automakers on the planet in terms of quality and class-above content for the price. They grew up shockingly fast.

@@iamsoogi ah yes the cars with the engines that came out a decade ago. The more recent Hyundais definitely don’t have that issue and if you look up the reliability ratings you’ll see Hyundai and Kia are in the top 15 of brands that have the least issues.

@@trenton.tchannel1810 Um, that's still a pretty common issue lol, we were shopping for a SUV a little over 5 years ago, than the new Sante fes at that time were having that issue. Got an explorer instead, zero regrets, been absolutely rock solid.

I would go for the Ioniq 5. The design is unique, futuristic and for me, more appealing than the Tesla Y and for sure, it's going to cost less than the Y and even Ford's Mach-e. An amazing achievement by Hyundai. Tommy's review was excellent! 🙂👍

I agree, plus there's the huge dealership network that comes with Hyundai versus the Tesla. A lot of Tesla fans get very upset when a car competes with their favorite EV but at the end of the day, competition is good.

@@imaldon1 Agreed, My wife recently got into a Kia Telluride which is cousins with the Palisade and we drove both prior to purchase. The Palisade was amazing, what really sold us on the Kia over the Hyundai was simply the resale is slightly better on the Telluride over the Palisade right now and honestly both were so amazing it pretty much came down to a coin flip. We had considered going with an electric vehicle for her this time around but when we researched it the infrastructure for EVs where we live in Maine is just not great. Hopefully in 4 years when we are looking again it will have improved and we can make the switch.

Hyundai came armed for bear in the 2020s They have done an outstanding job redesigning or upgrading EVERY VEHICLE they have over the last 2 years.

Cars like this Hyundai are just the tip of the iceberg in accelerating the shift to electric. It may not be class leading in acceleration or range, but it looks unique and given Hyundai’s build quality, you know it will be a good car to own long-term.

@@Sir_Pants_Alot Whenever I see someone talk about the comparative acceleration of modern cars, I remember that when the Porsche 930 Turbo came out in the late 1970's, it was the fastest accelerating car in the world and had basically the same acceleration as this -- 0-60 in 5 seconds.

This is what i love about hyundai and kia today. They innovate, they are creative and makes their cars less "boring" and less of the same. Sure, this will be a hit or miss for some, but will make it better for the competition.

Hyundai and Kia have come SO far! Really a great brand now days. I really like almost everything about this car. I do wish it had a little more power though. That's one of the most exciting things about electric cars in my opinion. I'm sure Hyundai or Kia will be bringing the speed soon enough though. Great video Tommy!

Just wait for the Kia EV6 GT. It'll have 577 HP and 546 lb-ft. Depending on when we'll see the solid-state batteries start being implemented into vehicles, those will add upwards of several hundred miles to the range.

The AWD with the bigger battery has 320hp which may not be a ton, but it also has 446lb ft of torque which allows it to do 0-60 in less than 4.8 seconds as tested by carwow and some others. In other words, its about the same, maybe slightly less quick than the Model Y LR AWD. I don't think you really need more power than that. Also there may be an N version later on. Either way, if you care about speed that much, you get a Tesla since that is what they do best.

I have a 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e PHEV which has the same 3D camera view…but it is no where near as responsive as the system in the Hyundai. Very impressed with the Ionic 5!

The recharge time is my favorite thing about the Ionic besides from being very aesetically pleasing. Can't wait to see pricing! Great review!

I have an AWD ultimate spec Ioniq 5 with eco and tech packs arriving in the UK in 20 days! In many ways I thought the Tesla was the better car - faster, longer range, more efficient, great charger network in the UK, but every time I look at them both I am blown away with the Hyundai design and know that I have made the right choice.

WhenTesla introduced the first Model S in 2012 I was convinced that EVs were the future for automobiles. When Tesla introduced the Model 3 in 2017 I was convinced that EVs could actually be cars regular people could afford without having to sacrifice comfort and convenience features. The downside of Tesla, however, is the fact that practically everything is controlled through the center touchscreen and requires one to relearn how to operate a car. It's doable but the learning curve is tough. Most auto manufacturers, in their haste to get entries into this new EV competition, have taken to grabbing one of their more popular models and replacing the ICE power with an electric motor and some interesting cosmetic changes. Even Hyundai is guilty of that. But with the new Ionic 5 they have done what Tesla did, by starting from scratch when designing this vehicle and questioning everything about what an EV really needs to be. I think they have pushed the envelope with some of the tech in this car and at the same time they have retained enough of what is familiar and useful in most cars today. They did not make some controls different just for the sake of being different and looking cool. I cannot wait to get a chance to try out the Ionic 5.

Almost every new EV has most of the controls in the touchscreen. Get used to it - it’s the future. The only ones that don’t are, as you say, catering to people who are used to black buttons.

It doesn't have anything to do with the car being an EV or not. I'm not against touchscreens, but I thin that there are cases where it is just a much better user experience to press a physical button which gives you some haptic feedback and you can even find blindly in the dark. It just not safe to be forced to rummage through some sub-menus on a screen while driving only to open your glas roof. I think the combination of touch and physical buttons would be the best. Don't get fooled by Tesla telling you touch is the future, minimalistic etc. They real reason is to safe money.

@@kieferngruen You explain my point better than I did. I am not against touch screen controls. In fact, I rather prefer them. As you say, having to work through sub menus on one central screen is not ideal. As an example the "buttons" for the climate control on the Ionic 5 are just small touch icons but they are readily accessible without having to remember the correct pathway to navigate through a sub menu while you are driving.

You know, this is what I like and appreciate with Hyundai. They take all the little conveniences and tech that the other automakers overcharge us for and make it widely available at a reasonable price. They are making others look bad and exposing them for cheating us all these years. Kudos to Hyundai for doing this! They were one of the first fo give us heated seats and bluetooth standard! Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Ford better watch out, because Hyundai is on a mission to make them look obsolete, period!

Ford is not obsolete, as they are fully committed to EV's. The Japanese like the Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc on the other hand.....they're way behind in electrification and they will start paying a huge price in a few years down the road. Japan as a country is behind the rest of the developed world in I/T, digitalization, semiconductors, batteries, etc. These are the essential components that are required to make good EV's.

@@jillthompson6110 About Toyota, they aren't behind if the infrastructure isn't here yet; they are still the number one manufacturer for a reason - people are buying their cars despite their being "behind". As for electrification, there were 2 reasons for it - the gadgetification of the cars features, and the increase in efficiency. Most people want a car that goes from A-B without issue, and Toyota has had that nailed; the efficiency, while not BEV level, is still awesome with the hybrids they have, at 10s of thousands less. As they slowly get into the market you are going to have well manufactured vehicles at much lower prices, beating out Tesla in those markets that want those things. As with things like stick shifts, a more powerful engine, better radios, etc - there are a lot of people that don't care about those features, and want price per mile to be the lowest possible. BTW, Tesla better watch out - where they are competing there are manufacturers that beat them in the market they own right now - Hi performance gadgetized cars. This Ioniq is going to outsell the Tesla model Y very shortly, barring an insane price.

@@pureabsolute4618 Toyota is behind because they work actively against EV's, so that they can stay making fat profits selling ICE cars (yes, hybrids are still ICE cars). This is how much Toyota is corrupt lobbying the US government to stop the electrification: driving.ca/auto-news/industry/toyota-ranked-third-worst-company-for-lobbying-against-climate-policies-report#:~:text=Toyota%20is%20among%20the%20top,vehicles%20in%202020%20and%202021. When the Japanese government announced major policy changes to promote electric cars in 2020, Toyota's head Akio Toyoda angrily shot back, saying this is bad for the Japanese economy because the EV's are going to put people out of work. Terrible company.

@@jillthompson6110 Did you read the article you posted? Did you see the part where they describe how the rankings work? Its based on the trade groups Toyota is part of and their "clout". Its basically an enemies list, but not based on actual shots fired. Next, there is a gigantic difference between being against the regulations that destroy the market, which Toyota has justifiably owned, and being against electric vehicles. Are you the type that claim that electrics don't need subsidies, but ICE does? Well, a regulation that bans the sale of ICE is a message subsidy; as in electric wins because everything else was eliminated. As for climate change, its a much larger equation than just "do you support electric". Pretty sure Toyota is involved in all of them, including the Social Justice initiatives. You are eating your own.

@@pureabsolute4618 agreed Toyota is also taking electrification seriously with their recent investments. IMO Toyota is the one doing the right thing. The infrastructure to support electrification is still in the works. When the time comes for true 100% electrification Toyota will undoubtedly become a leader just like they have with ICE.one thing to note until recently Toyota infotainment straight up sucked but they’ve fixed that with their most recent iteration as seen in the new tundra and Lexus NX. Toyota is not always the fastest in innovation but when they come out with a new product it’s almost always going to be perfect and without major flaws- something other manufacturers can’t do. I was once a fan of Hyundai and Kia but with their recent engines issues and massive recalls I’ve stepped back to reassess. Only time will tell if their new transition to electrification will make them more reliable or become prey to the same issues with their ICE vehicles.

Damn, whoever hired the recent engineers and designers at Hyundai, KIA and Genesis deserves a gold medal. These 3 can do nothing but build outstanding cars. From styling and value to reliability and outstanding safety and infotainment, they always amaze me. Makes me wonder what’s in store for the future.

Peter Schreyer is the head of design at Hyundai. He is formerly the design guru at VW. He designed cars such as the original Audi TT, the New Beetle, and the Mk4 Golf & Jetta. He is the guy who gave Kia the "Tiger Nose" grille. They also have engineers from BMW and Benz. You're basically getting German cars for Korean prices. It's brilliant.

The Ioniq 5 was the car I recommended for Nathan after disappointment with Kona and leaf reviews, issue reference needing more comfort and room for 6+ footers. Hope he got to drive that Ioniq for comparison of the huge difference in interior space versus Kona and leaf. Definitely a step up for 6+ footers.

I got a chance to see this here at the LA Auto Show and I was very very impressed I was under the impression that it was still a concept car I had no ideas it is production ready wow what a handsome looking car and I agree it's retro futuristic exactly what I was thinking cyber type of car I am going to be paying close attention to price . 30-40 should be okay .

This is the most common mistake Ioniq 5 reviewers make. With the luggage net in the trunk removed, the second row recline is surprisingly more. and If you open the front trunk and open the cover, you can easily change the air filter. This is incredibly easy maintenance.

Tommy is the star of TFL IMHO. I’m a long time Tesla owner and IMHO Tesla needs to worry more about Hyundai than GM/Ford. This car looks like it might be a winner. Charging infrastructure will remain the core issue for competitors but if Tesla opens the SC network to all this issue is gone.

As more non-Tesla EVs hit the road, there will be incentive to improve the CCS fast-charge infrastructure. I don't know that Tesla wants to open the SC network too much, because there is already a wait at some of their stations.

Not sure on current production numbers but Hyundai claims to be targeting 10,000 a month. This got dropped to 2600. Even if they get to 10,000 that is not serious competition to Tesla model y that is producing over 2000 a day from a factory with soon to be 4 factories running. But I like the car!!

Great review and decent model from Hyundai. Curious about the price and the availability as this will directly compete with Hyundai's ICE offerings with likely lower profit going to the manufacturer. I don't think this CUV threatens Tesla in any way as the Model Y will likely be the best selling vehicle by sales revenue next year and by volume in 2023.

Fun fact: the four little dots on the steering wheel are Morse code for the letter H (for Hyundai of course). Also, you can bring the rear car seats forward a bit and then it reclines more.

Real world range may be closer to Tesla, as Hyundai and Kia have more conservative and realistic EPA estimates on other vehicles while Tesla rarely comes close to EPA estimates

I love the way the inside looks. The seat looks a lot more comfortable than the Tesla. I drove a Tesla model Y and noticed it had too much bolstering. It looks like the Hyundai has a flatter, more padded seat. Also, I really like the flat floor.

I thought the complete opposite of the Tesla seats. I thought they felt like a couch which isn’t bad necessarily but weird considering Tesla markets it as more sporty. Definitely nowhere near as much bolstering as a Mercedes BMW or Audi

@@PQV-8898 In my 30 years of driving, I can tell you, when I'm driving long distances, I can drive up to 6 hours continuously on a flat seat verses a bolstered seat. On my last road trip, I was driving 800 miles a day, only stopping for fuel, food and bathroom breaks and during that time, I didn't feel tired or sore. If I had bolstered seats, I would have had to stop every 2 hours because my legs would hurt. There's a reason why you don't see highly bolstered seats on long haul big rig trucks or RVs.

I would gladly take the negligible hit in aero dynamics with conventional door handles rather than dealing with a door handle that is a 2 step process. Really irritates me to see the door handle, one of the most frequently used parts of a car, less convenient but more complex.

Great overview of the car, it will be interesting to see how it's priced when it's released in Canada. I think you nailed a key things that traditional automakers are getting right, they put "things" where they belong, rather than trying to get people to adapt to a new way. I naturally look at the side mirrors when considering a lane change, having the blind spot indicator in the mirror means I see it when I check the mirror. If I have to check the center screen, then check the mirror, then shoulder check, it's just more steps to miss/get wrong.

Yeah, I wish Tesla had blind spot monitoring indicators in the mirrors. I've had my Model3 for 5 months and I still can't get used to having to look at the center screen as part of the procedure. It feels very unnatural. It does have the lane change warning, so at least it will alert me if I'm about to merge into someone, but not before causing a bit of panic to the person I'm next to! I haven't tested this feature, so I don't know how close I have to be before it intervenes.

@@jamespaul2587 one of the biggest reasons I reserved the Ioniq 5 is because model 3 price increases. That and I really do like the car. It might not be as techy as a Tesla but more space then the model 3 and frankly I think it looks way nicer.

I look forward to reading and watching these video reviews from Tommy. He is really well-versed on what he's talking about, and explains it in a very easy to understand and relate. Regarding any comparison to Tesla, Tesla has a lot of things going for it not the least being their ability to revolutionize manufacturing. I do think that that move to Shanghai is going to come back and bite the company in the ass one day. Regarding how the Koreans compared to Tesla in EV manufacturing, I believe they will actually corner the market because of their ability to cover the entire pricing range better than Tesla. Also, the people they have in the styling departments and the ride quality departments are going to make the difference when consumers are shopping. Great review, Tommy!

I’ve got a 2018 KIA Niro HEV and it has been a great car! Got it 3 years ago this month and it is about to hit 74,000 miles. Still gets great gas mileage and is pretty peppy for a base model hybrid, it’ll even catch a scratch as it shifts into 2nd gear!! I’ve never seen an economy car do that before. Hyundai and KIA have come a LONG way!!

If I had an EV, I'd plug it in every time I pulled into my garage in the evening and unplug it every time I left in the morning. Having the charge port on the passenger side rear seems like the exact most inconvenient spot for this.

I had a look and drive in one of these in the uk and my conclusion was much nicer and much better VFM than any Tesla. Not an iPOD on wheels just a nice efficient comfy spacious car.

The sliding console is a good idea. Your seat is adjustable for different size people. The reach to that big slurpy needs to be adjustable too.

8 years ago I would never want to buy a Hyundai, got one as a rental, ABUSED the shit out of it. That rental handled the abuse extremely well. Now I've owned one for about 5 years now, still happy with it. However I live in Canada, from what I can tell we have an excellent dealer experience here, so I might be a bit biased.

My Dad just took delivery of an Ioniq 5… it’s very very good. Innovative in many place and familiar in others. Is it as fast as a Tesla … no but it’s plenty quick. Big on the inside with comfortable seats. This thing is a winner. They will sell tons of them and when the “N” version comes… whoa momma.

Neighbor just took delivery of a new model y, no issues with panel gap that he could find, and he owns his own auto body shop in AZ. This new Hyundai does look interesting, nice body design.

@@douglascutler1037 My MYLR delivered in late Oct had panel gaps, both frunk & left fender. They were addressed with on-site service. The right side B pillar upholstery gap not so much. He was able to make it slightly better, but I was told “they all have that”.

I love the Birdseye view. It’s one of the reasons I bought the Bolt Premiere version, over a Tesla. That, and the LCD rearview mirror camera. I don’t understand why Tesla, being such a tech savvy company, doesn’t incorporate this type of technology in their vehicles! Once you’ve had these types of features, you will hesitate to get another car without them

Tesla is all about cost cutting. That's why there is no 360 camera, or blind spot monitors, or physical buttons, or HUD, or a driver display. Their new car don't even have indicator stalks, moving those functions to the steering wheel in the form of touch buttons. It's all about cost cutting.

They just released pricing, base model with smaller battery and rwd is ~41K. Bigger battery and rwd is ~45K. AWD with bigger battery is ~48.5K. All prices include destination. With the tax credit, the 300 mile bigger battery and rwd will cost you ~37500 base which is pretty good considering its comes decently equipped.

The inconvenient "luxury" powered door handles and charging port cover detract from the car, but that flat floor and deleted console are terrific. It's a crime that Tesla no longer offers that option.

@@Trikenut012 A lot of automakers use it actually. My daughter's 2018 Cruze has the same spring loaded fuel door. My only worry would be that a lot of people have this personal vendetta against electric vehicles and tend to vandalize them or do things to sabotage them. I think leaving it inaccessible from the exterior would be important.

I'm not suggesting it would be the be all end all in securing the charge port. But it makes it less readily accessible. There's a bunch of videos of people just randomly vandalizing electric vehicles for no reason at all. Most of the people doing the vandalizing do it discreetly in broad daylight and in parking lots. Realistically a spring loaded door release would work fine, but personally i'd rather have a mechanical release.

US version will be missing powered rear seat adjustment (it's slow anyway), remote rear seat adjustment on the passenger seat back, photovoltaic roof, passenger power seat with an equal amount of adjustment as the driver side. Just to keep it at a competitive price. But, they're giving out 2 years of free unlimited charging (30 min max at a time) at Electrify America chargers.

It's really just marketing. Americans hear the word "SUV" and they can't snap it up quick enough! Ford calls their Mach e an SUV/crossover and it has less ground clearance than this Ioniq 5. I doubt people are going to try to take these things off road anyway.

Wheel base is longer than the Hyundai Palisades. And it has 20" wheels, and has good ground clearance, a large cargo area and more passenger space than most 5 passenger SUVs. As an Ioniq 5 owner, driving it feels like a crossover SUV more than a hatchback. The seating position also feels higher up as well as the visibility. You feel like you are driving in a crossover SUV for sure, but in a good way. Definetly doesn't drive like a hatchback.

As a Tesla owner I like what I see in other manufacturers, but for me it was a matter of charging infrastructure when I want to go long distances. In the city I don’t think there are gaps since you can charge at home, but for traveling these companies are still at a disadvantage compared to the supercharger network. The ability to charge faster than a Tesla is only as good as being able to find a charger capable of that kind of fast charging that is convenient and is in working order. Too many times I hear about EVGo and ChargePoint chargers being down or very finicky. It was only a matter of time that a legacy manufacturer would be able to create a viable EV with probably superior build quality, but the infrastructure really needs improvement before I would even consider one of them.

Charging networks was one of the big reasons I bought my Tesla, but that is changing rapidly with EA expansion and the new consortium of electric utilities that are getting together to put up a fast charging network. Not to mention Tesla saying they will open to all eventually

The other thing to remember is we’re not sure any company other than Tesla can make a profit yet with an EV. People constantly accused Tesla of not making a profit on their cars which is dumb yet no one really questions any of the legacies ability to make a profit. And as production ramps to double, triple and on and on the price of Tesla’s will drop and really start squeezing the profits out of EVs

@@robocheme880 the way VW set up EA means EA has to support itself from the charging fees so I expect they will expand as they go, or eventually be bought out by someone else like what is happening in the UK with Gridserve. The $7.5 billion from the Infrastructure Act will help with setting up new and larger charge stations. EA was started with $2 billion. The electric utilities have just started getting into this and they may end up being the largest players.

This is a great looking car and as a former GTI owner, I really appreciate it. However, the one issue that these manufacturers are not addressing and Tesla is: the charging infrastructure. I’m not a huge fan of Tesla quality (I’ve driven a few and they all have some rattle or issue), but that’s the only ev I’d buy at this point.

The Ioniq's exterior is amazing with the perfect amount of 80's vibe designed into, which is arguably the best decade ever to have existed. However, the interior is very behind its sister car and since most of my time is behind the wheel, I would have to go with the Kia over the Hyundai.

It is a pity that reviewers still need to apologize in advance to the Tesla bullies who troll anybody offering a positive review to other brands. I am starting to think they take pride in the damage they do to the brand. So glad to see the Ioniq 5 finally ready to show up in the US. Hyundai/Kia have really stepped up their game and have a real winner in this platform. From Lucid to VW and all across the range of prices & styles we are seeing more and more really good EVs. Soon we can add pickups and top end sportscars to that list. We live in amazing times.

@@nordic5490 Yes, but it is terrible for the brand image. They are in denial about the issues the company faces and the company itself is inside that bubble. It seems each showroom and service center manages its own policies, leading to wildly varying customer experience. Ongoing small QC issues keep slipping through. Right to repair, etc. Musk distracted. Won’t end well.

same here i like the ev6 as well. but this ioniq 5 doesnt look bad at all. if i had to choose between the two, i will have to go with the ev6 in terms of styling. but i will have to see the two vehicles in person to see what i really think.

Love the EV6 but saw it in person the other day, looks slightly and weirdly long... sporty but the proportions are not quite as nice as the 5. Am sticking with the 5

If the price is right, and they have short delivery wait times, it should do very well. Especially for those who are a little uncomfortable with how different a Tesla is to the cars they are used to. Does it get OTA software updates? What autopilot tech are they developing? - Thanks for the video!

​@@dmitchellhomes That's for rear wheel drive, 168 hp, and 220 mi range though. The long range, RWD, base trim for $45k is intriguing to me for the potentially longer range and shorter recharge than the similarly equipped ID.4 I bought.

The different model prices will be $40k, $51k, and $55k. The dual motor, long range model for $55k will definitely eat into Model Y sales. Especially given you still get the $7500 tax credit, more range, and faster charging.

@Adam Chalmers don't forget Teslas horrible build quality. I honestly kept thinking as soon as some of these automakers have something similar with better quality, similar price point and, yes, a dealer network, the man who doesn't really know how to make cars might be in trouble.

Both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the KIA EV6 are very nice cars, but do you really think the Korean duo will build enough to be a threat to Tesla? It's not just about designing a better EV, they have to scale up production to the 100s of thousands.

Yeah, Hyundai makes more cars in a quarter than Tesla makes in a year. They also own their own steel mill, tannery and microchip production facility. They also don't have to beg for funding from investors every time they do something. Scaling up production will not be a problem.

@@senoow4215 There you go. Fast production doesn't mean squat when the product is junk. Not saying Teslas are junk, but they could be a lot better. It might take longer for me to get a Hyundai or a VW, but my bumper won't fall off in the rain 😂

You're not too far off. Hyundai's inspiration for this design is their Pony from the 80s. Similar boxy 80s hatchback shape to the Horizon.

The 4 pixels (dashes) on the steering wheel are Morse Code for "H". I like so much about this vehicle. It's major shortcoming is the lack of a rear wiper tucked up under the spoiler.

I really dig the look of this car. It looks futuristic without looking over the top. Like they designed the car for MY2030. I just bought a Colorado Z71 so I’m out of the market but I do look forward to the EV options when I’m ready for a new vehicle.
