I wish they’d added some more… morally gray emotions. Pride, Confidence, the kinds of emotions that kids were taught to have but would get labelled for. My theory is that either Riley is getting bullied (no one was at her b-day party but her parents, and all her new emotions are negative) or, more interestingly in my opinion, she's made friends with a bully and she's helping them hurt someone else (and her new emotions signify she's not fully on board with it). Being in the head of someone trying to rationalize bullying someone would be very interesting. I doubt Pixar would ever do that but It'd be pretty cool.

I actually believe that the boredom (ennui) character is going to have a bigger role than most expect Inside out, stands out because it shows the development/ enhancements of recognizing and dealing with emotions (i.e. Joy trying to distance sadness until the revelation that sadness is needed in the 1st film) Just like envy can breed ambition, boredom can breed creativity. Bored students in class start to draw, or doodle, in their notebook.... Creating something that does not bore them. Side note- Joy is the only emotion with a name that some people also have. The choice to name boredom after it's French translation Ennui may be an indication that, like Joy, it's going to prove to be a leader of these newer emotions we're being introduced to... just a thought

I really think that the boredom emotion (ennui) makes so much sense as Riley becomes a teenager because most children are really good at filling their time with imaginative games and relentless amounts of energy. As we age, we understand things better so the world becomes a bit less and less wonderful, especially as we go through harder levels of education. Riley will probably start losing her imaginative spark and naturally grow bored very easily or begin going into existential dread because her mind just needs something to do

Yea I thought the same thing. What's the difference between Anxiety and fear? I suppose you could say fear is in the moment and anxiety is for the future, but that's how fear was portrayed in the first one. Always anxious of what could go wrong. Which makes sense but now adding Anxiety as her own thing seems pointless.
@afroling2096 Жыл бұрын
@@oddsmile1234 thats kinda the issue I have too. Not saying they aren’t different emotions because they are indeed different. Fear is a feeling of discomfort when we are at risk and occurs automatically in the moment . Anxiety is the feeling of worry and fear and lasts way longer. For example you may feel anxiety if you have a big exam or your thinking of something unpleasant that may happen to you. But for me they’re not different enough, it’s kinda like having resentment and anger in the same world or sadness and despair. Now in a different world this could make since to have each emotion based character cover its own niche but inside out kinda already stated that more complex reactions are made by two emotion working in tandem. So for me theses new emotion haven’t been in my liking so far. Kinda wish they made more basic/discrete emotions that mixed with the basic five…but then the first film didn’t imply that ether so kinda of a rock in a hard place when it comes to making sequels.

That could be cool, it always bothered me how impulsive and almost robotic the humans of inside appeared, and it would be quite nice to know that the host has the greater say in things. Heck maybe they could introduce Riley’s thoughts, morals and are more powerful because they dictate on what to do. And the emotions need to realise they are just one component of the mind. And so find or need to find peace in that. And need to be okay if Riley doesn’t agree with them and goes her own way, controlling and managing the voices in her head and deciding for herself.

It's funny because I've actually already known what ennui is for years from learning about the production history of the *first* Inside Out. As some of you might already know, many emotions were considered when they were thinking of characters for the film; Ennui was one of them. Anyway, I love your idea of showing more of Riley's life outside her home because I personally feel like I act completely differently around my parents, the people who arguably know me best, and other people. They could take the opportunity to show any contrasts in Riley's relationships with all the different people in her life, newer and older. Maybe she has a a few close friends in San Francisco now. Maybe she's drifted apart from her older friends, I would find that very relatable because I've literally moved six times in my life and I'm not even twenty lol

Something that irks me a bit is the idea of anxiety itself. The other emotions are all fine and should be there. They aren't negative in any way. But anxiety is a negative extension of fear. You could always tell that fear in of itself is always anxious. Worried about the dangers of something. But anxiety is the worse version of that. I feel like thats not good. Like its as if they added depression while sadness exists. Its not supposed to be there. Also how do they explain the fact that we never saw these emotions when we traveled to the minds of the adults.
@MeemahSN Жыл бұрын
That's the point of anxiety - it's irrational. We don't need anxiety when fear already exists, that's why it's considered a negative experience. That's why it's so invasive, because we shouldn't technically be feeling it. That's something the movie should and needs to touch on: the intrusiveness of anxiety and the way it forces itself into situations where it doesn't belong. But for your last point, I think the reason these emotions aren't present in the adults is because they're less prevalent once you mature into adulthood. During puberty and adolescence, these feelings and emotions are heightened, but as you grow and develop they tend to take a more backseat position (unless you suffer from an anxiety disorder or other mental health problems). So, I image these feelings ARE in the minds of the adults; they're just not needed as much as they are when you're younger, so we don't see them outside of Riley.
@yanoizikawa770 Жыл бұрын
@@MeemahSN I mean in the last movie (which was great btw.) It showed how sadness is an important emotion despite it being inherently negative. It's an emotion that should be expressed more. But here, that's not the case with anxiety at all. Fear is important but anxiety isn't. It's shouldn't exist in a healthy human. Unless the movie actively tries to get rid of it or deal with in a healthy way I'll be very concerned.

One thing I’m concerned about is why these are the emotions they’re going with. I could understand them if it weren’t for the fact that we see Riley experience three of them in the original film. Both anxiety and embarrassment at school, and ennui is literally the emotion fear disgust and anger create. The problem is the ig movie goes out of its way to show that the emotions aren’t solely just what their name is, it’s other emotions that are close to it, like joy being love as well, as well as the fact that emotions can fuse to make new ones. In fact the only emotion I can see actually working is desire, which would contain envy, motivation, determination, and even romantic attraction

I’ve not seen many questions as to why these emotions weren’t present in Riley’s parents when we got to see what was happening within their own minds, but part of me wonders if that means they suppressed those emotions, potentially to a point where they don’t allow themselves to feel them. Enui is the one I’m most interested in however, as you would’ve thought that being bored is something everyone goes through and cannot suppress, whereas envy, embarrassment, and anxiety can be. Definitely something to think on. I’d like to imagine that maybe an adult mind has different emotional departments, seeing as there should be so many different emotions they have, perhaps it gets a bit too cramped in headquarters, leading to different spaces for more complex emotions, whereas the prime ones we see remain for simplicity sake.

A problem I have is that these new characters aren't emotions per se, but are variations of the emotions we already have. Embarrassment and Ennui are both forms of disgust and anxiety is a form of fear. Envy is the only one here that isn't a repeat character but it's still not really an emotion. Its just another form of the emotion of desire. There's a few different psychological theories on emotions, but I believe that there's really only 11 emotions. Two sets of 5 that are opposite each other one set positive the, other set negative, plus Anger which has no opposite. Love - Hate Courage - Fear Joy - Sadness Desire - Disgust Hope - Despair In the first movie Disgust kind of took on the role of her opposite. She wanted Riley to be friends with the popular girls. But the eMOTION of disgust doesn't MOVE one to do something for the approval of others. That would be either the emotion of Courage or Desire.

(Evil or cured by man) OR has been allowed to be selfish+"hormonal"... and there hasn't really been any strides made there... Like, we DID have some slight poking out situations. But, they never go further than period jokes. So I dunno... I HIGHLY doubt they'll be able to "go all the way" so to speak... but its been a long back and forth dance so far... so... who knows? Maybe they'll surprise everyone?

I think those emotions will come and go away when she grows up because her parents don't have these emotions

Isn't anxiety fear? They already have a fear.

Ennui is just a fancy way to say bored, don’t bother trying to find a deeper meaning or whatever.

Interesting how disney is now going to release 2 movies about girls going through puberty. Weird how boys going through puberty isn't a film though.

They did NOT make an inside out 2. That movie was shockingly bad, how is this movie gonna even make money?
@afroling2096 Жыл бұрын
Trust me it will, tho i feel like it will end up as the incredibles 2. It will do gang busters at the cost of continuity and story.

I get where you're coming from with the sequels issue.. Trust me. Frozen 4 plans when the 3rd isn't even out yet.. HOWEVER, inside out *could* have potential as Riley was 11-12 in the first one, meaning her growing up is potential for a sequel to explore new emotions in a way that doesn't feel forced. Will it work? Only time will tell. 🤷♀️

I actually Think that this “envy” is not gonna be an angry envy, more like a sad envy, like the type a teenage Girl Might feel after wachting pictures of much more beutiful girls than Them online.

True or false Everyone has or can have anxiety? Pixar’s last good film that wasn’t a sequel or a flop was Coco(2018) and Inside Out(2015) and Up!(2009).
