As an owner and user of the psvr, I think the biggest problem in the vr gaming space is still just the same technical difficulties as previous iterations. Playing for hours like I would on a traditional screen causes nausea for a lot of people. The headset is too heavy to play more involved games comfortably, and if you're playing a game where you are stagnant (puzzles and such) being in the vr space just doesn't really seem necessary. This limits people who buy in, which limits game production, a vicious positive feedback loop

We all want the fantastical VR from Sci-Fi books and movies. The reason VR is not yet popular is because there's a lot to develop before the technology is truly appealing to the masses.

What Meta has now done is push a mandatory update to all Quest 2 and 3 headsets which force-enables all tracking data (and yes, that means _all_ data) to be uploaded to Meta... eye tracking, biometric information, what you look at for how long and often, how you engange with which software for how long and often, etc pp. That's not an impressive headset, that is a terrifying piece of surveillance equipment.

I want the handheld more than anything but I'm an early adopter for VR and I welcome them finally getting into it. I have a deck OLED and I love it. I had the LCD and it was dual booted. The real winner here would be a handheld with true Xbox backwards compatibility and power nearly comparable to the series s (this is already proven to be possible) The headset would be best aimed towards first streaming flat screen games. But, going forward, with the right tech, it could easily be a part of the ecosystem.. /Tldr I want a handheld Xbox way more than another headset.

Personally, I'm patiently waiting for the Valve Deckard and the possibility of a new Steam Machine and what they will bring to the table, but VR, in general, is a lot smaller than people realize. Headsets may sell, but most sit unused, regardless of the brand, for months, simply weeks after launch. VR is by far the least used big name platform out there and I doubt it will change anytime soon when the industry is moving towards hand-helds, phones, and companion devices that you can comfortably take anywhere you go.

I would say it is also worth mentioning Microsoft has a defence contract with the US about developing IVAS (military VR/AR headsets) and has already developed and produced 2 generations of them.

MS should emulate what Steam Link is doing on Quest: allow local streaming from xbox console to a large virtual display and enable VR games to run in wired/wireless vr mode.

They just have to update direct x on the console in theory to support it and potentially they could even make the sdk vr aware. However every game uses a particular sdk version and runs within its own vm on the xbox, which is quite clever, but does make updates harder and if they want features from a newer sdk version they need a new vm for the game.

It does make sense for Lenovo or Asus to make their own headset with Horizon OS until you realise they would never be able to compete with the Quest devices in price. Meta are the kings of cost cutting and their margins are rumoured to be slimmer than average.

Talking of arm is interesting as qualcomm launch their new snapdragon x in June, with future Microsoft surface devices set to use it. A portable handheld xbox using that could work and it can apparently work with discreet gpu options, so the rumours about them Talking to intel could be gpu related perhaps.

I can see Microsoft offering to replace what currently is known as quest link with WMR for desktop PC to headset VR connection because from how the current Quest desktop software is you somewhat can tell that they only maintain it because it's a feature the users want to keep and the second they can get away with no longer needing it the better.

Well they already control the directx stack, so they could do some interesting things with that. Plus games would just need updates to work with whatever vr system due to the abstraction from hardware direct x provides (obviously I'm being overly symplectic here).

As a meta quest 2 user for almost 4 years i have to say the most disturbing thing about the state of VR is 92% of people on a meta headset have no idea it can be used for PC VR and ran at 5K resolution. I blame Meta for this because they don't market it for that at all but completely support it.

the xbox series s and x could easily support vr with a software update the usb 3 ports in the back are more than capable of handling data transfer speeds needed to do so sure they would have to develope games for vr to even warrant this but its not like hardware has to have something special to run VR these days just needs a usb 3 port and the headset could handle the tracking and such

Its a little more complicated due to how games are run on xbox. The system has 3 virtual machines, 1 for the os (heavily stripped down windows 11)! 1 for the ui and the 3rd for the game. Each game vm is set by the xbox sdk the device use, and they cannot change the sdk version without spinning up a different vm for the game as it'd break compatibility with the original game version. So the vr versions would likely be sold as separate titles and most in a vr games pass collection I guess.

I don't want Xbox to make another under powered system next generation. We've heard from enough developers that we know the Series S held games back and made development more difficult this generation. What I'd like to see Xbox do next gen is release their full powered system and also a Roku/Firestick sized option that's a cloud gaming system. Bluetooth connection for the controller and cloud streaming access to Game Pass and your digital game library. The full power of the next gen Xbox in something the size of a Firestick. If Xbox wants to gain any ground on Sony, that's how they do it. It should be $100 or $150 bundled with a controller. There's never been a cheaper, more convenient option for getting into gaming before. The marketing almost writes itself. If they do a handheld, it can't be guaranteed all the same games day and date with the main console. It should be like the Steamdeck. Whatever games happen to work on it are the games you get on it. Don't force developers to pair down their games in order to work on a weak ass handheld. It makes developers not want to even release an Xbox version so it's just hurting Xbox and their fan base.

Honestly, if the next generation of gaming isn't handheld with dockable support and egpu's. i'm really not interested. The modern world is way too busy. I want to be able to gane a little bit weaker when i'm on to go. And then dock when i'm able to play on a TV or table top with that egpu.

The PSVR2 failed because Sony just did not put enough games of their own on it. But with Meta providing the headset and having Microsoft make games for it will help them both out. A platform for Xbox games and Meta gets more games to promote their headset with. It's a smart move for both where they get what they want from the other.

It also alienated potential customers by not offering backwards compatibility with the ps vr1. This may have softened the lack of games to some extent. microsoft can bring vr cod, halo, forza horizon, diablo and warcraft and others to the wider vr market potentially and apple and sony would be locked out of that unless they agree a deal with microsoft. The ps cod agreement probably has no mention of vr versions. Whether any of those would be any good is a different matter entirely though.

Tell the folks that play racing games in VR that it's a gimmick. Or Phasmophobia VR players. It isn't a gimmick in itself like 3D TVs were, the problem is the way it's been used in quite a lot of games has been gimmicky, when it's utilized properly and actively developed for instead of being tacked onto the "main product" like Gran Turismo's PSVR 1 offering it's fantastic There's a lady called Nikita Fajitaa who's been using a full motion VR rig (Including a '360 treadmill' type thing for walking) to succesfully lose weight, pretty sure she's beaten Skyrim and is now tackling Fallout 4, all through VR If you actually think about the possibilities VR opens up to us it's crazy, especially now that we've got pass through enabling you to do things like learn piano with a guitar hero type overlay showing which notes to hit etc The issue is price and public perception, if everyone thinks the same way you do about VR, then it'll never see the uptake it needs to become mainstream, but if it's marketed properly like the Apple Vision Poo was that could change very quickly and obviously the cheaper the barrier to entry the better, hopefully with more time we'll see prices continue to drop on older but still useable hardware Edit: I guess another pretty big issue that I hadn't thought of to begin with is that it causes motion sickness for some people, I'm sure it's high on the R&D priority list but it could be something that isn't realistically solvable because everyone's eyes are different, slightly different shape, differing levels of sensitivity etc etc so that could end up being a big sticking point I suppose, depends how common of a problem is truly is

In the beginning of this year I attended a Xbox investor conference that did not paint a pretty future for Xbox or Phil Spencer and now we're speculating a mere 3 months later of the future of Xbox? Phil Spencer invested Trillions of Microsoft money into game studios and game pass with the attentions to dominate the market. Not only did it fail but Xbox owes money to investors that Big Dad Microsoft paid. During this conference Phil lied his ass off to the investors in a attempt to keep them with every excuse you could think of. "Covid really hit us hard" 3 whole years where everyone on the planet was forced to stay indoors with their Xbox and they couldn't turn a profit. They put the Xbox exclusives on competitor hardware to try to generate some revenue from untapped markets because they are THAT desperate. They laid off a chunk of their staff and asked the remainder "Not to liquidate your assets" AKA if you sell that stock we're in trouble. If they can't double the amount of PC users on Game pass there won't be a Game pass and the downward spiral begins. The Xbox branch of Microsoft is dying and Microsoft is sitting there with a saw deciding whether or not to cut it off.
