In recent years, Canada's become quite the attractive place for prospective franchise owners to place a team. From hockey to soccer to baseball and basketball and two types of football, opportunities are boundless!
Well, boundless for about 11 choices or so, anyway.
Which is the most probable? Which is the least? Which did you not even consider before? And when will Iqaluit and Saskatoon get professional hockey teams? Can any new cities or regions of Canada host professional sports franchises?
All will be answered in the next 8 minutes and 45 seconds.

While Hamilton should have a team and could support a team, it will never happen. Buffalo Sabres Ownership would veto any and all Hamilton Expansion or Relocation Bids. A large chunk or the Sabres Fan Base and Season's ticket holders are residents of Hamilton and Sabres Ownership would never want to risk losing that by allowing a team to come to Hamilton, so they would exercise their veto right and halt it. Leafs Ownership would also veto a Hamilton Team, as Hamilton falls within the mile radius of Toronto were they too could exercise their veto. Likewise it is totally fantasy to think The Leafs would ever allow a second team in the GTA or Toronto area, their veto would come in play and kill it.

New team names: Vancouver Pacifics (MLB), Quebec Nordiques (if not the Citadelles/Aces/Bulldogs/Remparts) (NHL), Hamilton Ontarios (NHL), Montreal Dynamos (MLS - The current Houston Dynamo (2005 - Present) had only been rumored to relocate to Montreal prior to the birth of the Montreal Impact (2012 - Present)). I also like the idea of assigning (or re-assigning) the identity of the Islanders to a new CFL organization in Victoria, Vancouver Island, which is part of the province British Columbia, and thus altering the NHL's New York Islanders to the Brooklyn Americans.

Actually, Vancouver Island has a population of over 750'000 as of 2017 figures. Over two-thirds of that amount live roughly within 100 miles of Victoria. Futhermore, while a potential CFL franchise in Victoria would share the same media market as Vancouver, TSN actually has TWO radio stations for that market. It should also be known that neither station has the exclusive rights to the Vancouver Canucks, but do cover a wide variety of minor or lesser-known teams locally.

So... who's moving to Quebec/Seattle first: Arizona or Carolina?
@timtwoface
@timtwoface 7 жыл бұрын
I'm betting Carolina relocates to Quebec City (akin to Atlanta to Winnipeg) and Seattle gets an expansion team. Expansion teams earn NHL owners a lot more money (Las Vegas paid $500 Mill USD just to get a team, which all 30 owners split up) and Seattle, like Las Vegas, is a city with deep pockets. Quebec City is a smaller market that, due to the Canadian Dollar, would save a lot of money if they received a relocated team (which would cost like $150 Mill USD or something). I think it's clear the NHL wants Seattle in a bad, bad way, and they're keeping Quebec City in the mix because they're the perfect landing spot for a floundering franchise, a la Winnipeg in 2011. Same size market, same economic situation...the primary reason Winnipeg was chosen first was because they had an NHL-ready arena built, whereas Quebec City did not. But now that they do, I expect it to happen in the coming years.

Montreal needs back the expos and a new nba team. Quebec City needs back the nordiques. Vancouver needs back the grizzlies. Fc Edmonton and Ottawa Fury Fc need to go too the mls. WTF IS THAT HARD TO DO
@NovaScotiaNewfie
@NovaScotiaNewfie 6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Jr it is hard to do. Leagues don't award franchises on a whim. You need business/financial backing, market research that shows you can support the team, often you need municipal, provincial, Federal funding to help out. You have to have a proper stadium in place and often contracts have to be negotiated between the city, owners and the stadium owners. That's a whole lot of cooks on one kitchen to be able to come to an agreement. You also need to have practice facilities as most stadiums are owned not by the teams but another business. And even if they are owned by the team they're used for other sporting events, trade shows, concerts etc. So the field, floor or ice can't stay down all the time, the stadium has to be changed over for other events. There also has to be plans for a league to expand or a team up for sale. Geographic location is also important for logistical reasons. If it were such an easy process then Quebec City would have an NHL team and Montreal would have an MLB team again.

Maybe if the NBA gets an expansion team in Vancouver, the Memphis franchise could rename itself the Bobcats (since Bobcats are native to the Memphis area) so the Vancouver team could be the Grizzlies. In that case, I think the Memphis franchise would sell their history as the Vancouver Grizzlies to the new franchise a la Charlotte Hornets

Right now, Winnipeg is the most over-saturated sports market in Canada. Between having the NHL, CFL, AHL, independent baseball, and now WHL and a CPL soccer team; it has way more than it can handle. Even if the Manitoba Moose were sent packing, the market would still be over-saturated. Compare the number of sports teams that Winnipeg has to Quebec City and Hamilton, which are both very close in population, Winnipeg sports fans have it ridiculously good. Because the Jets are the top ticket; they drain a lot of sports fan entertainment dollars away from the other teams. So one of the last things Winnipeg needs is another pro sports franchise.

Some of your suggestions are well supported but some of them you seem to just be citing the population as the sole reason to that city being deserving of a sports franchise. Realize that there are cities of 1 million plus in the US that don't have pro sports teams (Austin Texas). Why? Because there is much more to just population when it comes to having a pro franchise. You need an owner, stadium, millions of dollars in corporate sponsorship (the life blood to any pro team), and of course the blessing of the league along with all the current owners. CFL. Can only financial handle 1 more team which would likely be Halifax or Quebec City, but lack of a stadium is the problem for both locations. NBA.Vancouver does have a chance of getting a team there again, but it is a small chance as the NBA has already hinted at the possibility of a return to Seattle. Other likely candidates that would see a team before Vancouver are Vegas, Louisville, and Austin. 3 markets the NBA has expressed interest in. MLB. Already looking at Portland and Vegas, so Vancouver is out of the question for any West expansion. Montreal does have a real chance of getting a team back there and the MLB has expressed interest. NHL. Seattle and Houston are your next likely candidates. Already have arenas, are in the West (balance the league), and plenty of corporate dollars. Southern Ontario certainly has the fan support, corporate dollars, arenas, and infrastructure, but I do not see the Leafs and Sens voting for another team there. And Bettman has shown his disdain for a third team in Ontario (just ask the fine people of Hamilton). Quebec City has an outside chance, but I bet Hartford would get one before Quebec City would, more corporate dollars there. NFL. As you correctly pointed out it would be the death of the CFL. Only Toronto would have the financial capability, but the fan support is not there and there is no stadium (don't even mention the Skydome). That and the NFL is EXTREMELY protective of their brand and has zero plans of expansion. Why would they, they are the wealthiest sports league on the planet. MLS. Some of your suggestions here made sense, especially Edmonton with Commonwealth, but it will likely never happen. There are 12 cities in the US, many of which already have NFL or large NCAA stadiums, that have already expressed interest or submitted a bid to the MLS (Nashville & Cincinnati). David Beckham is also actively trying to get a team in Miami.

I'm afraid some of your predictions are little too pie-in-the-sky. What makes you think B.C. wants another CFL team when the Lions regularly draw less than 20,000 for home games? Vancouver is an NFL town; just like Toronto. As for MLB in Vancouver; B.C. Place would not be a suitable facility for a team. Unless you haven't been paying attention; the days of football and baseball teams sharing the same stadiums are all but gone. Teams demand a lot more in the way of rights and revenues nowadays and are usually the primary tenant of their respective facilities.

As much as I like this, I don't think Toronto should have another team. Although they "deserve" one, it wouldn't be successful and would always be crushed by the Leafs in support. Look at the Ducks compared to the Kings, or the Islanders and Devils compared to the Rangers. Even the White Sox to the Cubs or Mets to Yankees, Angels to dodgers. The original is always more popular and overshadows the smaller one

This is especially true when you compare the Devils to the Rangers. The Devils have won the Stanley Cup three times since the Rangers last did; but it still remains a challenged franchise. ...and in the Southern part of the state, they simply cannot touch the Flyers.

@@glassestarzan8702 Well LET 'em riot! The truth is a growing percentage of Canadians living in nine other provinces don't really care about the CFL and Canadians living in NHL cities are more likely to follow the NFL than the CFL. Mr. Veneto's idea is not unlike the NHL-WHA merger of '79. The NFL could consider all seven NHL cities in Canada, and could simply pay Saskatchewan and Hamilton to disband. It would be great no longer having to listen to the arrogant loudmouths from Saskatchewan anymore; nor to see any more of their childish, attention-seeking billboards, either.

Toronto isn’t like New York where depending where you live in the city or suburbs decides which team you will root for. Toronto is all Maple Leafs country and forever will be. Toronto is a big city, but the whole city supports their Leafs and a 2nd NHL team wouldn’t gain any support, or at least nothing compared to the Leafs support. If the NHL wants more teams in Canada, they need to go with Quebec City or Hamilton before a second Toronto team.

A Toronto NFL team would steal fans away from the Argos? Look man, the NFL won't work in Canada period, not because it would share a market with a rival league, but because Canada already has their own code and they're too attached to their own game to even care about the American code. Let me use a prime example here, the Bills-Toronto series. They would put the Bills up against an opponent and play at the Roger Center in the regular season. Not only did the Bills lose everytime, but the attendance was poor because Toronto prefers the Canadian game over the American game. Not only would it not not make sense for that reason, but also the Bills already have a market in Toronto and the cities are too close too each other, and you have it backwards. The NFL team would ultimately lose to the well established Argos in the GTA. Also, the major American leagues are done expanding into Canada. I'm not saying there's not a fanbase in Canada for a relocation or expansion team, but there's no financial benefit because the value of Canada's dollar is piss compared to the American dollar. I'm not bagging on Canada's economy, I'm just saying, leagues like the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, and MLS are a business first, and revenue and profit is everything in those leagues.
