That Indian guy really studied the Chinese deep down. He knows what he is talking about. That Huang guy is a Taiwanese. He talks around the political correctness line because he is a professor as outsider and what he says has consequence to his career. So he played dumb or timid. Susan is basically the establishment. She follows the US party line.

India is not a nation. It is a BUNCH of nations who are all VERY poor and until less than a decade ago, had tariffs between states.... yes, tariffs.... On top of this they have utterly insane government regulations which hold them back. Just because you are democratic does not mean you will succeed. You can still have a Shit Democratic government if your population votes for slavery via oppressive government(socialism generally).... Classic Example: Argentina. Used to be richest nation on earth On top of this fact: You have to catch up first before you can innovate. That is EXACTLY what CHINA has been doing. Copying and catching up. This is exactly what India is currently doing. When they come close to the west, watch India blitz past China(assuming India integrates into a country in the first place). Will happen in next 50 years. Hopefully I will still be alive to see it happen. @@howso5302

So much ignorance and arrogance I see about people claiming to KNOW China is on the rise. They’re not. Their growth has slowed to just above zero and will remain relatively flat for MANY years. They expanded too irresponsibly and the US is moving manufacturing out of China soon. China’s demographics are a nightmare with it aging population. Kudos for bringing so many out of abject poverty, but China’s day in the sun is OVER.

The speed to market in Shenzhen is amazing. The Big Bay Area initiative makes sense. One of the critical success factor will be the investment China puts in to attract the top talents into this area. This is also seen as a hope for our younger generation therefore I am inspired by this.

Hell no. It is rather obvious. None of them have started a company before either other than Ian, but his is all intellectual/speaking and has no property to protect. Why China may end up ruling, but innovation will cease to exist because of their societal structure. Worse, some bigshot can come to any company in China and either steal it outright without compensation, or simply shut it down instantly if it is competing against their own private empire.

Kwong Wong agreed. America needs to change the mentality of creating enemies out of thin air one after another. During the cold war against Soviet union, it was valid. But what about japan after that, and china now? Why does it have to be America who keeps being no 1? Why does the government need to create an enemy for their people to hate on? Like you said, it shouldnt have been a zero sum game to begin with, but i guess it’s rooted in the difference of the east vs west in many ways.

In my Eastern culture, we have a proverb that goes something like, "The leaders of a society are a reflection of the people that make up that society." In the case of China, their head of state is a chemical engineer by training. While here in America, our head of state is a reality TV, real-estate mogul. China is pouring money like there is no tomorrow into the STEM fields, but the same cannot truly be said about America, at this time. This debate really has morphed into the different forms of government and economic models that these two 21st century rivals have in their state institutions. I believe that we now live in a multipolar world, and I don't believe that only one country will lead the world in technological innovations. Don't forget India and Iran and Turkey and even Germany, who's keeping the EU afloat. Even America has a decent future ahead, but we really cannot have a debate in such black and white terms. Silicon Valley was a huge American success, but now that basic model of innovative technology and entrepreneurial spirit has been embraced by the entire world, including developing parts of Africa and Asia and Latin America. Keep in mind that none of this creative freedom would be possible had it not been for the militaristic implementation of the petro-dollar system, in which fossil fuels are sold on the global markets using the US Dollar. This allows Americans to remain unchallenged and innovate beyond their wildest imagination, but without checks and balances, those Silicon Valley tech giants have become multinational corporations who don't give a damn about allegiance to America. In the case of China, the state controls the policies that Chinese companies must follow. And again, it is China, along with Russia, who are challenging America's petro-dollar system, which ultimately will affect the creative freedom of America, to some extent. Economics and governance go hand in hand, and such debates are really missing the overarching point of how dynamic and multipolar our world has now become!

I think it’s interesting that they discuss political and economic outcomes without including sociological and environmental factors. One child policy and extensive pollution will create havoc in their political and economic domains in the future. 28 percent of cities in China are already beginning to contract. Much of China’s dominance was attributed to their sheer numbers, but in the future that advantage is going to dissipate. Furthermore, demographically, they are going to have a nightmare version of South Korea. All of that in the context of climate change which is set to be more impactful in Asia then anywhere else is going to create quite the strain. I just don’t see where the money will be in their future to keep pushing their version of Silicon Valley.

China has proven itself to be remarkably resistant to the free flow of information In fact I talked to one professor at a US technological University who said they would no longer invite Chinese students because they refused to share information with other students. And this is the core of the issue It's a cultural problem which the Chinese are unable to solve. The reality is silicon valley is more vibrant and dominant that it's ever been and China in 40 years has not been able to come up with anything even remotely close.

Talk about China's 5,000 years compared to the last 40 years as if the last 40 years was not proof of American cultural superiority. America has gotten much more done in a much shorter time than any other society which is ever existed on the planet and continues to do so. Just look at the list of Nobel prizes awarded... What susan has been pointing out that the reason china is not yet the next silicon valley is in terms of ideas because china supresses a lot of ideas and in order to have innovation you also need an area where different ideas can be challenged and debated including politics which is why china is not yet a silicon valley. Indeed shenzhen is a mecca of electronics because it is the place where most of the global electronics are made but the open political environment is not there many chinese entrepreneurs have invested most of their money in the us because the usa is a safe place to keep their assets due to its legal system.

if you want to learn how to do something, you look at people who are successful at it and how they do it. American colleges and companies have let Chinese students and graduates into their departments, then are surprised that those people share what they've learned back home. Incredible naivety.

Si Valley has been largely depended on foreign born genius but trained by Americans university. Indeed, people don't know the most achievement shining Si Valley today are Indisputably performed by "Chinese born engineers", not those management whosoever took the credits for granted. As an engineer there before, I know better then any bystanders! Native Americans' contribution to Si Valley was basically negligible nearly nothing more then a spectator yield in the stadium. One shall never ignore the Chinese gene gets deposited five thousand year beyond VSOP.

Pls spare your critics over Susan who's a senior fellow in a prestigious institut upon Asian studies, which is to say, regardless of the facts she mentioned that seem to encumber China's development to some certain degree, she's a very insightful expert on Asian issues. However, seeing that all the other 4 guests unanimously choose yes, there must be one no to lead the debate to success, otherwise 2mins after the show's opening, we could've shut down and come to terme by saying, yes we all agree, period! Fine, show budget spent, 0 rating received....

As a Chinese born and raised in China and worked in both countries in extended period of time, I still believe true innovation will come from US. Culture and ideology matter, without true freedom if thoughts and rule of law, no society will produce ground breaking innovation. If you look at Chinese entrepreneurs, most of them are educated in the west. The combination of east and west will create true wonder for the world. The real question is how to two cultures can collaborate and share the benefit of that partnership. It is not a zerosome game. It's a pity neither side of the governments has the vision abd courage to see through that.

I believe, firmly, and it is very evident across many categories for comparison that at the very same time China grows capability in ABC-XYZ industry/innovation/capability, the US loses near equal ground in those same categories, on average, to Chinese industry. And so the correlation of Chinese industry and China's rise, upon the weakening of US Industry and America's decline is far too coincidental to dismiss purely on the grounds of the Chinese "Miracle", or that China somehow earned its position on its own unique merit and intellectual prominence. There is no historical comparison down through the ages, not since the beginning or human kind, between any two nations or empires who - A) collectively allied with each other economically as each others primary trading partner, B) within the exact same time-frame, C) where one Nation rises as the other weakens, D) where one Nation becomes exceedingly powerful to the degree that the partner Nation is having its once extraordinary power being usurped (by the very Nation they are economically pared with), E) across the same categories industry, manufacturing, STEM, tech, AI, finance, wealth holding, political influence, military), F) where one Nation waxed great success from essentially mirroring, cloning, stealing, borrowing, mimicking and educating itself with the power structures. methods, principles, capabilities of the other Nation, G) where the Nation on the rise uses it trading relationship to dismantle its trading partner and destroy, disintegrate/subvert its power and influence. This is unprecedented in history. It is purely fact that if the US and China had never entered into a trading alliance, that US industry would never have off-shored it industrial treasure to China, US Institutions would never have gifted billions of FDI into China, where the US and China would have remained exclusively shut off from each other, and prominent US universities did not host China born students - then what we see today in China would not exist. This reveals the truth about China. China's ascendance was made possible by the US. The US engaging with trade in China was not a catalyst for China's rise, it was THE catalyst for China rise. Regardless of how smart or hard the Chinese work, or how far-reaching, deeply intuitive their planning and strategy may now be, China is likely using an emergent strategy to contend with the US. It requires more than educational reform and focus on tech or STEM education to ascend the ladder of economic primacy. Math which is the basis for most useful STEM, has been around for centuries and some very smart people who understand complex math have walked the earth for quite some time. Math comprehension does not give rise to superpowers from third world nations in a 30 year stretch. Immense wealth, power, intellectual capital coupled with true capability takes several decades to build and even then does not guarantee Imperial world status. No, China could not have ascended so rapidly up the learning curve without a massive springboard, and that springboard was Western capital, know-how, industrial equipment, processes, capabilities, principles, institutional level context being set up in their front yard. Anyone can disassemble a piece of technology and learn about it. It does not mean that the technology would be transferable or easily replicated. The difference is that US greedy bastard corporations trained their Chinese counterparts, and made everything available to the Chinese to copy the process. We gave China direct access to our industrial treasures to plunder.

An important difference between China and USA about who control the population in each country is that in China is the government the one who control the population and in USA are the corporations that control the government and the population. Since the main interest of the corporation is to make more profit and gain more political power for themselves, the power is more divided than in China, and the relationship between the people of USA and the corporations is of indifference, corporation care about people insofar that people are useful for them, if they are not, then just fire them. Instead in China the people who are the actual executioner of the development feel more identified with the government is not that the people feel so happy about it but is not true what the media says about the Chinese people, it is not true that the Chinese people hate their government and that they feel completely oppressed and that they can not wait to topple down the government, the media keep giving to us the same message that they gave to the world in the fifties and after, every communist country is evil, inefficient, corrupt and stupid, if that were the case China wouldn't be able to succeed in the way that they have. How come that American haven't succeed in create chaos against the Chinese government as they did in Syria and Lybia? China never has been in better position than now, and the Chinese people are aware of the suffering or hunger that they have gone through their history. The idea the media gives us about the Chinese leaders is that the only interest that they have is to fill up their pockets with money, for sure there must be corruption but I don't think that the degree of corruption in Chinese politicians and entrepreneurs are higher and stronger than those who want to make China a stronger country, Probably the highest leader are aware of the dimension and importance that means to put China as the first power of the world.
