Hey Eck. I don't know if you'll see this comment, but I just wanted to personally thank you SO SO MUCH for covering the PWHL. I hope others start to cover this new and exciting hockey league as well. I know there are some KZbin Creators (Won't name any names) who aren't wanting to cover the content because they're afraid their mostly male centric viewers won't like it, and/or feel like it isn't really a departure from covering beer league or college level hockey, and as such not worth the time. But, for creators like you, your coverage is much MUCH appreciate. Stick taps from this former player, and thank you. (I did an edit of this comment cause I did basically quote one of the creators, and after thinking about it, it seemed like an attack even though they weren't named. So decided to rephrase a bit.)

The New York turnout was low due to them playing in Bridgeport, CT. They'll be playing 4 games in the same arena the Islanders play in, so should get much better numbers there, on par with the other teams. Speaking of attendance with other teams, here in MN we ended up not just with 10k, but over 13k! The place was absolutely rocking, was a ton of fun.

@@YZER19 I don't think you've been watching any PWHL games. They ARE playing physical. The main difference is that they try to play fair, and in the NHL we have a lot of rats that just play dirty, nothing to do with physical. But yeah, it would need tweaking. Maybe only allowing the PP to end if it wasn't due to a possibility of injury play. Let's say, over the glass PP could be given a Jailbreak PK, covering the puck could get Jailbreak PK. But then slewfooting, boarding, high sticking would be regular full time power plays. I can see something like that working

The game was fantastic, the production was pro-level - they are doing it right. Can't wait to see more. NYC is playing in Bridgeport, Connecticut; home of the Islanders' AHL affiliate. It's the same problem with the "Boston" team, playing in Lowell, MA; playing at UMass Lowell; which might as well be New Hampshire. Both teams need to play in rinks closer to their perspective cities. Put the NYC ladies in Nassau and the Boston ones in Agganis at Boston University.
@Leon-de-Leon5 ай бұрын
Exactly! You can see that they had more people in the crowd with Hartford Whalers or Connecticut Whale jerseys than the New York Islanders or Rangers. It's hard to attract New Yorkers when you are too far from the Big Apple and hard for people from Connecticut to be connected with a team who don't have the name of your state or your city (even if, as you say, Bridgeport is affiliate to the Islanders).
@plushie9465 ай бұрын
unfortunately it just becomes so much more complicated having to play in a rink with NHL match load. Scheduling becomes exponentially more difficult. Look at Scotiabank for example. It almost literally cannot host more games than it does. The Marlies already only use it for some of their matches. This is gonna be an issue for any new hockey leagues since most big cities host at least 2 other teams at their most central arena already.

I've watched all the games except the last one in Minnesota and, for the most part, have enjoyed the experience. Frankly, it's quite impressive that they managed to organize this league in about 6 months. I'm quite optimistic that viewership and attendance in Canada will be strong given our love for hockey up here. With the ability for the players to practice year-round rather than part-time while juggling other jobs, the talent is bound to improve over time. The twist of short-handed goals ending power plays is intriguing. I'm uncertain about its overall impact, but it's a fascinating change nonetheless.
@plushie9465 ай бұрын
Also getting to know their teammates better. Some of these women only ever played *against* their teammates and only started practicing with each other around 6 months ago, less in some cases. I imagine even by the second season there will be a lot fewer mistakes and better passing. But even barring that it was definitely on par with the lowest levels of mens pro hockey already imo. Pace felt similar to OHL to me, just with a little worse teamplay which is to be expected.

-- This game was in Bridgeport, Conn., so that may partially explain the smaller crowd for the opener. The NY team will play in a few different NY-area arenas this season, including Long Island. -- I don't mind the jailbreak goal for minor penalties, but I think it shouldn't count for majors. If you did something nasty enough to earn 5 minutes, your team should still have to play a player down the full 5 minutes, regardless of any shorties they score. Apparently the PWHL rule book limits the jailbreak goal to minors.

I have to say, glad to see an awesome hockey league for Professional Women's Hockey. Just as we see for college and even U18 players after high school, besides the college league and even in the international stage during the Winter Olympics, there's really no high-level league for women's hockey and after college hockey or the Olympics, it's sadly the end. So with the Professional Women's Hockey League, I think this really gives athletes who want to continue to play at a competitive level. This also could not only jump-start a more focused league for female hockey players but talk about a chance to pull players international just like in the college or NHL level. This is something I've been excited for since the last Professional league so hoping that it continues to grow!!!!!

I think the physical side is an adaptation, I watched Toronto and New York and it was physical as hell, but other games not so much. But since the refs are allowing it I think it's definitely something that's gonna evolve as the teams settle and start making roster changes, the more physical teams will dominate everyone imo so other teams will follow along in time.
@Matty-275 ай бұрын
I was hoping the same, especially since the SDHL has explicitly allowed body checks except for open ice ones going in opposite directions (same direction is fine) for the past season and a half and it's been going well for them. They're not as physical as the PWHL has shown itself to be so far though, wouldn't surprise me if the bigger international ice is a factor. So i was really disappointed when someone in a press conference about the PWHL a while back said "checking isn't part of the women's game." Not universally true! That's only true if you make it be true and you don't have to! And then i watched the first game and was pleasantly surprised at the body contact. And you know, it's a league that's just getting started, the fact that they're allowing this kinda of physicality in a brand new league makes me hopeful that if it goes well (seems to be so far) and the players enjoy it, they'll be open to even more checking and physicality in the future! I know the players have found the body check penalties obnoxious in the past, I'm so happy for them that they were able to advocate for that to be largely done away with!

The game is awesome…Toronto and NY are by far the most physical games (I think the league hasn’t decided how to call the hits yet)…the announcers in Minnesota and Boston were great…the worst was NY…I hope we have a KZbin channel decided to commentary on the sport. -NY is 0-7 on power plays let a short handed goal. - is NY going to switch goalies every game? -Todays first goal was really soft, I think it took MTL off there game. -Boston seemed to be the most dominate especially that 1st line. Even thought they lost. - Nurse has only one assist. “Is she overhyped” kinda narrative - Ottawa seemed to be really undersized how’s that going to translate in a contact league - is Zumwhinkle gonna be MVP with 4 goals? … Just some genuinely analysis, sprinkle a bit of overreacting, so fans of sport can get into the players and how they play same way we react to Ovi having a “drought” and is it over for him, is Berdard overhyped. That kinda stuff would be great for the league and the players.

If we watch hockey all the highlights for a month of “this is why Conor will get traded” or “will ovi catch Gretzky”…I wanna watch videos about players idk yet and learn there personalities and hopefully build rivalries not just teams but players (Avery/ Brodeur)(Ovi/ Crosby). If you watch the NY/ Toronto 2nd game, the announcers were boarder line unlistenable, they literally went minutes without talking about a single player, didn’t talk/ follow what was going on the ice, and just waited til one of the “famous” players touch the puck and they would say what was going on…I literally had my laptop with him so I could follow some of the players 😡. In terms of skill, it's like watching OHL hockey; and that's not a knock, as long as it's competitive and exciting, it's worth watching. There's a lot of hype right now, we'll see how it turns out, but I think there is more of a desire/passion for women's hockey than other women's sports, and the PWHL will see much more success than the WNBA if they can keep the hype going and build a good fanbase. The cities that have teams currently are hockey cities, so they love it. It will be a lot cooler once the teams have names, logos, and a brand. Women's professional hockey up until now has basically been team Canada vs. team USA so there is a familiarity with a lot of the players in the PWHL, which helps the league. The NHL is worth around $42b, so the PWHL will have to make quite a splash to gain traction and become a larger part of professional hockey culture, but it's definitely been fun so far. They're really leaning into all the 'yay for women' stuff right now, which is awesome, deserved and obviously people understand it's a huge achievement, but eventually it will have to be more about just hockey players playing hockey. Hoping for nothing but the best for all involved!

I was at the NYC home opener. The poor attendance is strictly due to the fact that the game was held in Bridgeport, CT. That’s at the outer fringe of the NYC Metro Area. It took me 4 hours to get to the game and 4 hours to go home. Don’t get me wrong, the game was intense, but the venue sucked. Now, the PWHL will host a few games at UBS Arena which is a LOT more accessible for NY fans than Bridgeport. However, Bridgeport will remain the primary arena. If that remains the case; NYC will continue to suffer poor attendance. I LOVE PWHL NY, but they HAVE TO leave Bridgeport for either UBS, Nassau Coliseum or Prudential Center. I’ll take any of them over Bridgeport.

Really cheering for this league. All the players are loving it and are absolutely passionate, and that makes for great entertaining hockey. NY honestly got robbed with that disallowed goal though, and that could have made all the difference. Still glad Toronto has a W now though.

This isn't meant to be negative in any way, but PWHL is the most entertaining women's league I can recall. The new rules make it exciting too!

Regarding attendance for the New York game - I agree that it was disappointing but tbh I think they shot themselves in the foot by playing at the AHL arena in Bridgeport I'm a west coast fan, and I researched what it would look like were I to take some friends in the New York area out to a game, and it's a good hour drive from Manhattan. As a visitor that's enough of a pain in the ass, I couldn't imagine if I was working a full time job in NY and wanting to take my kids. Am i dicounting some of the fans in connecticut? probably, but I imagine that they're losing out on a good chunk of working class fans in the NYC area for sure. I'm not sure if they could have reasonably sold out someplace like Madison Square Garden enough to book that as a home arena, but something not immediately within range of public transportation might make this a hard sell for the NY market, from my perspective.

have watched all 5 games so far. The pace, physicality, and talent is there - it's a good product, and it will get better when the teams start to gel together. It is not NHL hockey, nor do I expect NHL hockey from them, but they are on par with AHL level of play. Should the NHL promote this product? Yes, but not to the degree that the NBA is involved in the WNBA. Todays game , between Montreal and Minnesota, had 13k in the seats, and another 16k watching the youtube channel. 30k engaged with the game is phenomenal, and should draw some eyes from sponsors. Sad to see Tim Hortons is not a major sponsor yet.
@MrIndiemusic1015 ай бұрын
Id rather the NHL stay out of their way for now. The less people and monied interests with their own agenda involved means a more focused purpose built product. I think its best for this league to grow on its own merits atleast for a time being. Right now it feels like the actual sport is being put on the forefront which is refreshing when compared to these bloated leagues these days like the NFL, NBA, and NHL.

I have been saying the NHL should go to a 3,2,1 point system and get rid of the trapezoid rule for years.

I really hope they capitalize on smaller non nhl markets. Halifax is great, Cleveland or Cincinnati OH, St. Johns NS, Erie PA. All places that have a good market for thier current teams that would support a PWHL team. Having teams close to NHL locations so they can partner up would work well too

Honestly i'd love to watch these games. I watched woman's team USA play against our local junior team and it was super fun to watch. Now that being said most of these woman's teams are about as good as juniors but it would still be entertaining to watch.

This league looks great, sad to see how many people are showing true colors and hating, any chance they get.

They should try handing out penalty shots when the penalty goes beyond the game timer. So that teams can't just negate icings during extra attacks.

Ilike the Champions Hockey League Power Play rules they implemented this year 1) If you score on a delayed penalty, the offending player/team still goes to the penalty box 2) If you score on the Power Play, the player still remains in the Penalty Box until penalty time is up 3) Score a Short handed goal to end the Power Play

I love the idea of jailbreak goals but I was upset about the disallowed goal. Recently in the Tampa Montreal game we had a puck not frozen leading to a strange goal then here in the pwhl with Toronto and New York we have a puck that wasn’t called frozen leading to a disallowed goal. I understand that the refs probably meant to whistle a bit faster but everyone always says play til the whistle and that’s what New York did here

I'm think the jailbreak rule is cool. But to balance it out I think a powerplay goal shouldn't end a penalty.

To be fair for New York’s poor attendance, that game was in Connecticut and not actually in New York the state
@noot62305 ай бұрын
So I can probably assume attendance was low cuz New York is playing in Bridgeport Connecticut, that’s the islanders affiliate. Kind of hard to get New Yorkers to go over there cuz it’s either a long ass drive or a ferry ride.

I'm nut sure about the Jailbreak. I always figured the reward for a short-handed goal was the goal.

I’m ok with the jailbreak rule for penalties that wouldn’t normally result in injury i.e. tripping or holding… I think for penalties for high sticking or cross checking (which is now a huge problem for the nhl) the jailbreak rule should not apply

Here in Minnesota, we definitely take our women's hockey seriously. Bonus that there are so many good games out there to enjoy from men's and women's teams.

I was so happy to see Ottawa getting one of the initial teams. Up the ladies in red! I am pleasantly surprised at how physical it is too. Imma attend more games, especially knowing that its a physical game. Womens hockey has a bright future ahead of it if they can keep up this intensity! COYGIR!

I don't think the jailbreak is a bad thing for minor penalties like a hooking or roughing, but it definitely shouldn't be a thing for hits to the head, double minors, and 5 minute majors.

For the New York games they don’t sell the other side of the stadium for some reason
@my3dviews5 ай бұрын
Likely because they only sold 2100 tickets and only open up the sections necessary. I've seen soccer games where only one side of the stadium is sold for that reason. No need to clean up the unused side.

I seem to be the only person who doesn't like the jailbreak rule. Penalties are to punish an offending team. If the team with the powerplay makes a mistake, by allowing a SHG, then they get penalized by losing their PP and the original offending team get's a lowered "sentence"? I think it should be the opposite, not only do you not get out of the penalty if your team scores a SHG, but you should have to serve the entire 2 minutes, regardless of how many goals you get scored on, just like a 5-minute major. The whole point of penalties is to drill into the players heads to not do what they're not allowed to do and punish them when they DO do it.

I only missed one game so far but they'll all been really fun to watch. I think it's simply a huge step for the game of hcokey in general. The jailbreak goal is awesome, I think it adds a lot more to the game but there's still a huge risk in rushing down and potentially leaving the play at the other end.
@perrykomick94785 ай бұрын
Yes...huge step for hockey...promoting a professional league which every team would get beat by ANY junior team😂
@brandonstriegel34615 ай бұрын
It seems like the jailbreak goal feels really good and earned when it’s for you bc it was hard and feels really unfair against you bc it double punishes you. You messed up and now your down a goal and you lose your advantage to try to get it back. Like the person who commuted the penalty still did that. Y does their team doing good negate their punishment? Idk

I’m a small town Canadian gal so NHL hockey has been around me all my life, dad liked to watch, but I was never interested, too annoyingly macho for me to connect with… The PWHL though is hypnotizing me. Doesn’t matter to me that NHL players are better, what matters to me is seeing how far *women* can go. They feel so relatable as women too, like they’re like your female jock bestie from high school… Anyway, I hope they can attract an even wider female audience. I think women connect with athletes as people first and foremost, not as athletes, so if the PWHL gets content out there showing the players’ personal lives and their chemistry with each other, it’ll turn more girls into fan girls.

Love watching the games on KZbin. Love the 3-2-1 points. Love no trapezoid. Jailbreak is a gimmick. If you want to increase offense, make players serve the full penalty, whether a goal is scored (by either team) or not.
