I think that right after a breakup this is a fine coping mechanism. But after the initial shock and grief, it's good to have some self insight and take responsibility for our actions so that we don't repeat the same pattern.
@corneliahanimann2173
@corneliahanimann2173 7 ай бұрын
I agree with this wholeheartedly. When I went through my last break up, I was pretty in tune with my emotions, I was not shy to say that I miss my ex, adress that there were good moments too that were worthy of being mourned. Obviously a break up involves mamy conflicting feelings and I knew that was what I had to sort out, but whenever I would bring that up to my friends, they would insist that I am better off without him, that if I miss him so much, why don't I try to get back with him as if I was unaware of the reasons for which I decided to end things to begin with? I just felt like they wanted to support me, by gatekeeping which feelings I should and should not feel while not adressing the more complicated reality of a break up. I think a big part of dealing with a break up is also mourning the future you have imagined with a person, to analyze what that was and eventually reach a point of knowing what you want better, understanding who you and your faults are better and walking into a more certain future. The loneliness I felt from friends was the some of the most toxic feelings I have encountered, I thought I could be my authentic self to them and be accepted as that more complicated and hurt version of me.

To answer your question about the situation with the guy who was “short coming”: With him, Carrie wants to talk about their issue because she’s on equal footing with him. Same socio economic background, his mom is a writer like her, she’s accepted by his family so she’s comfortable enough to be assertive. Whereas with Big, she always felt inferior because he was old money, a world she never had access to AND she was not accepted in: the distinguished mom wasn’t interested in knowing her, big didn’t make an effort to to include her in his world, and he never showed her admiration. Very difficult to be assertive in that situation…

His family was wealthy, too, and certainly more so than Carrie’s family. She was able to press him to talk about it, because it was early and she wasn’t “obsessed” yet like she was with Big. Well, her column is named Sex and the City, so for her, those are the most important things. Big is checking these marks, as incredible sex, and the epitome of New York. It’s very interesting, as you pointed out, that she has more patience for commitment issues, than for issues about sex. I think that the writer did a phenomenal job at showing her relationships because it’s her perspective involved in the whole process of her dating life. Even Samantha found Smith with who she had developed a romantic relationship that was meaningful and important to her life.

28:50 I think it was not only the lack of commitment vs. lack of sex issue here.... but also the fact that Carrie was always much more eager to make excuses for Big compared to any other guy. AND Big was as slippery as a snake when he didn't want to talk about something: he would change the subject, or call her "baby" or, my personal un-favorite, give some vague and mysterious one-liners that didn't even make sense or count as an answer. But there always would be a potential for maybe. Maybe in the future, he would be open to discussing it, maybe she'd change his mind, etc. ... But this new guy, Mr. Fast and Done, told her point blank there would be no discussion about it. And he made it in the most obvious insecure way, so for Carrie, there was no point in trying 🤷🏼‍♀ Love your analyses videos!

She would chase people around demanding that they listen to her rewrite history, alwats made herself the victim and give herself special privileges to cross peoples boundaries. But she would still be saying that nonsense to anyone who would listen. It was gross but she was so unhinged nobody was going to he the one to argue. You were talking about her not taking accountability for the guys she chooses for the guys are just supposed to find her and you’re right, there are two sides to that. What wasn’t discussed is if ladies don’t take accountability for self, some guys can sniff that out. Lifestyle tells a guy a lot about you. Carrie’s screamed that she lacked morals, boundaries and standards. Big was a pretty intelligent man and has dealt with his share of insecure women. Carrie was easy prey. She was just too full of her own crap to see it that way. Look at how she discredited the therapist. She ran from the accountability the therapist was trying to get her to see she lacked. Take note ladies. Work on getting out of your own way. It will elevate you to a position where guys wouldn’t dare try you like Big was able to do with Carrie. If they do try, you’re strong enough to call it out and move on. She literally was the only woman he couldn’t commit to. The others; His ex wife, Natasha, the movie star were all women he knew he couldn’t toy around with. Although the relationships didn’t last, he knew he wanted a relationship with them and not some uncommitted fling.

I don't really get why the carrie hate but im 26 and i get her but im 26... Anyways the reason I believe he didn't commit to her it's because he was a business men who knew the image he needed to uphold and also he wanted a woman who was more up in the social class dilemma. I honestly don't see him as the price, i dont think he was such a great guy... He just had money and was well stablish in society, especially on the New York elite society so i understand why she though he was the dream and i get her in that too but of we're realistic he was a douche and at the end of the day i think he was looking for something that made him feel secure. Carrie was unpredictable, fun, outgoing, a bit irresponsible but at the end of the day i think she was very much a sunshine type of girl like thw golden retriever girl and he wanted a black cat. And i honestly think that has to do with the way he perceives how a woman of society should behave. U don't think shes at fault and i don't think she was better either... He just didn't see her as a wife and theres nothing wrong with that, she doesn't stop being a wife type just because is bot his idea of a wife is nuts to think like that as women. Well, Big cheated because he was bored with his younger dream girl. He made that clear when he complained about her to Carrie and lured Carrie back.

It's not a good sign when a person only changes for somebody else and not for themselves. That's just another layer of inner issues which will came up sooner or later. Seems like you put men on pedestal with this take, they use this "dream girl" just as much as the other not his dream girl. Why did he even start a relationship when he's dreaming or someone else? Maybe because he's a leech and delulu, and wanting someone younger is the red(est) flag there is

I really didn’t have TV when this was on but I find the commentary fascinating. As someone who was on the ‘cutting edge’ of both the sexual revolution and the ‘2nd Wave’ feminist movement. I think this is all very helpful for younger women exposed to the old ‘romance’ myths…I’m guilty of it but I wrote 2 historical romances made to my own tastes….but at this end of my life I wish I had more encouragement to live as a single from a yoiung age…I went through things that probably would not have happened if not for ‘love & marriage’ To my credit I did live independently in many ways and now I am quite the Solitary, living happily far away from cities with my cat and dogs.

29:27 Look, I love eating salad, that my mom calls me a Rabbit 😅 it's a joke between us. But if I'm in restaurant for lunch, I'm ordering a hamburger with fries, or waffles with cream or a vegetarian pizza. But if I feel like having salad, I would order it with chicken. Sometimes I would crave for a chocolate cake slice with a cup of tea. If I want a plain salad, I could have it at home, and even have it with bread, converting it into a salad sandwiches.

He may be willing to commit, but the much younger woman will not. She might think she wants to commit at first, but nothing is steady at that age. And because women have so many more options than men, it just exponentially increases the chances she’ll move onto something better.

I hate when women say men are scared. Men aren’t scared, they just don’t like you or want to deal with you and that’s ok, they might be a hot mess and have nothing to do w you or it could. The meeting of two compatible, attractive to each other, similar values and dreams is really rare to find so people should be easier on themselves.

I think it's a great analysis, but I want to add something. Carrie seeks validation because she is insecure, and after years of being with Big or chasing him, it's understandable that she's insecure. Her relationship amounted to emotional abuse, it is normal for her to be worn down, especially since she met Big when she was less experienced. I don't like to way so many of these channels are holier than thou. I do say this as someone who relates to Carrie to a certain degree, but I've had therapy and I was abused in the past by both family and partners. I refuse to compare women are abused and who have no foundation of identity due to society and their backgrounds, to women who always grew up with love and understanding and who have the capability to be secure.

I appreciate this comment. I love SATC commentary, but I think the best takes are more about exploring WHY these people act as they do, and make those choices, rather than simply shaking our finger at them for doing so. I think this show (whether it intended to be or not) is an unparalleled period piece - even though it isn’t an “old”show! There is so much to learn about these women, their male foils, even the side characters, and the tone of society and expectations in the early 2000s in one of the most lively, cosmopolitan cities in the world. Maybe I sound crazy, but this is 1 of 2 tv shows ever that I rewatch and revisit and return. The other is Mad Men. For what was marketed as a girly caper of a tv drama, this show is dense and very thought-provoking.

Big didn't commit to Natasha. Yes, he married her but cheated almost immediately. Their marriage started to fall apart very quickly as shown in the scene in the furniture show when he runs into Carrie and Aidan. It's was morning and he was already drunk and angry. He married Natasha for social status. Natasha was a young socialite and made him look better and that was what really did it for him. I'm not saying he returned to Carrie out of love either. He didn't loved her too, but he was attracted to her and knew he could manipulate her. I'm also surprise everyone praises Natasha behaviour so much, she initially turned a blind eye on the affair. She said that herself while chasing Carrie down the stairs. Only when the humiliation becomes to big (no pun intended) she leaves. The silver line for Natasha is that she does move on which is something Carrie is unable to do due to lack of self esteem. In later seasons Big falls for actress/model pretty hard and chases her endlessly. Which to me is another prove that Big obsessed over women who increased his status, not love. He was also looking for validation.

Salads are great if you know how to make them. Restaurant salads are below minimum effort to appear accommodating. You can have seeds, and a whole array of precooked/dried things to add along with other forms of protein and a variety of vegetables. I think meat centric culture has made salad look like pathetic leaves on purpose to seem like a less viable option.

Your opinion is often very biased and based on your own experience, which means sometimes you say things I’m shocking to hear coming from a seemingly informed/educated woman. You can have sexual chemistry with someone you don’t have a lot of in common with, the fact you haven’t experienced it, shouldn’t mean you’re demeaning those who have. Also some points would hit home better if you weren’t so condescending and self important.

Sure, Cici, I'm not sure where I said that, though. Was I referring to myself? Talking about not being intimate just because of the looks..? That would sound like me, yes. And yes, my opinions are biased.. very difficult to have an unbiased opinion, don't you think? Maybe this is just not the right content for you? Thank you for the time you gave it though. It's very appreciated, and I truly hope it wasn't all that bad. It would be a shame all this time wasted.. I hope I don't come off as rude, I'm sure that wasn't your intention also.

She didn't say not having stuff in common with... the question is, if you can't get along just talking, if there's no chemistry while hanging out, how did you get to the point of f*king? You're talking about stuff in common and a kind of friendship, where you're right, you don't need to be friends or have stuff in common to have good sex, but how did you get to having sex with a dry boring no chemistry meeting? That doesn't make much sense! Also, suggesting she's uneducated because you feel attacked is a little too on the nose. Passive aggressive comments like that are totally unnecessary to convey your point of view.
