Mascara is tricky as we get into our senior years. I love mascara. I have long lashes…I use a lash serum. I have switched to only using mascara on the outer 1/4 to 1/3 of my lashes. I push the outer mascared lashes out to the side- which elongates my eyes. Using less mascara works better for me. If I use mascara on all my lashes, I get a Bette Davis as Baby Jane look.

Yes on the eyebrows. So my routine (I'm 79) is: sunblock even on my eyebrows and shape them, cream blush on the side of my face and up toward the temple not close to the nose, then eyebrows with a plain little pencil, short strokes. If I'm going out, I put a dab of medium brown eyeshadow on the outer corner of my eyelid. That's it! I've quit lining, using mascara etc. no foundation.

99% of lipstick has smashed up bugs in them. It’s called CARMINE……. Carmine (/ˈkɑːrmən, ˈkɑːrmaɪn/) - also called cochineal (when it is extracted from the cochineal insect), cochineal extract, crimson lake, or carmine lake - is a pigment of a bright-red color obtained from the aluminium complex derived from carminic acid. Del-monte uses it in some of their fruit. All fruit cocktail has it in their cherries, Nerds candy has it in their candy, and some companies uses it in their food.

Mascara and makeup in general are a choice people make to wear or not wear. I stopped wearing makeup everyday. I don't care much about my eyebrows. All these are things society has pushed. We are told if we don't wear makeup we are not pretty, if we wear too much we are whores. Do whatever makes you happy. Forget trends. Forget the pressure from magazines and society to be a certain way.

We are all beautifully made.... we do not need the chemical enhancements to be that way. We need to examine their motivation: Profit being #1. Why spend our lives applying a mask and demasking at bedtime? Put your $ away and save for a great vacation, anniversary or other thing your heart desires......

I used to use false lashes 5 clumps on each eye. It was semi permanent and I did it myself. Then I got an eyelash infection - so no false lashes or mascara allowed. Plus I have to scrub my poor lashes in tiny circles twice a day with a lotion to kill the infection between each lash. So I have naked lashes but enhance my look with eyeshadow, soft matt brown.

I’m 65 and also skip mascara most of the time. I even have to watch liner and often use a nude terracotta pencil just to add the slightest bit of definition near my lash line . Speaking of 70s Maybelline, sometimes I use one light coat of their blue mascara on just my upper lashes, mostly in the other corner. It adds a hint of color around the eye without using liner or eyeshadow. I curl my lashes first. My mom spoke of the coal tar in mascara and she only used the Max Factor cake mascara to tint her blonde lashes. It didn’t thicken them much like the tube mascara does. I’ve also quit toxic hair dye (organic) 4 months ago and my roots are coming in white ! New baby hairs are coming in where the dye damaged, just like what you said about mascara. ❤

Well "Rebecca Over 60" I'm "75 Soon To Be 76" and I don't wear makeup anymore. I had worked full time for the majority of my adult life in medical related fields where I was in face-to-face contact with the public and medical business related associates on a daily basis. I wore full face makeup every day. I wore it on weekends too. I stopped working in 2011 and filed for disability in 2012. I've had a chronic pain disease for 35 years, and in 2012 I realized I just couldn't get up before the crack of dawn anymore, take a pain pill with a cup of coffee, take a shower, do the hair styling and makeup, and drive to work 5 days a week from 10 to 30 miles one way. I think I put makeup on 2 or 3 times since then, and just stopped doing it. I no longer have face-to-face contact with fellow workers, and don't know any of the people I see from time to time, and I just don't give a damn or feel guilty about not having makeup on! Like you, my eyebrows have nearly all disappeared. So have my eye lashes. In fact I'm quite happy I don't need to shave my legs or arm pits anymore either! I still have all of the loose-powder makeup, ( I gave up the liquid face foundation before I stopped working) pencil eye liners, eye shadow, lipstick, etc. The mascara dried up a long time ago, so I pitched it. My lashes are so thinned, that putting on even the smallest amount would look stupid. I have some never used fake ones, but do not have any desire to wrestle with them. I have been single longer than the total of two marriages, and quite frankly I like it this way! No expectations to deal with every day. So if someone thinks I look horrible with absolutely no makeup on, that's their problem, not mine. I really don't give a rats ass anymore. I'm perfectly happy with the natural me!
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
I love it! Sorry about the chronic pain, though. French women wear very little makeup and look wonderful! Skincare is most important but all you really need is a good moisturizer and, of course, some type of sunscreen. Going natural can be empowering.

If you do care about yourself, look into the ingredients in most cosmetics... They're loaded with syn thetics, tox ins, and other things that can wreak havoc on your health. Endo crine dis ruptors, messing with your hor mones. No wonder most men age way better than women. They don't put all the yucky ingredients on their bodies that go straight into the bloodstream. Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Anything on the skin for 15 seconds, less than half of a minute, gets in the bloodstream. That includes hair dyes, finger nail polish, polish remover, moisturizers and synthetic perfumes. I wish I had known this a long time ago. There are cosmetics out there that are non-toxic. One of them that I've tried and found to like is Red Apple Lipstick, they have very moisturizing lipsticks, their lip glosses, especially the mint ones, are not sticky, just moisturizing. Their Ralleybalm is very moisturizing. Their eyeshadows are non irritating, gluten free and can be applied dry or wet. I use them on eye lids and eyebrows. I personally don't like their eyeliner, it smears on me. But they are a good company, with good return and exchange policies. Made in the U. S. A., T e x a s. Not sitting for months in hot metal boxes on ships from Chi na, who are known to be cru el to their people and their animals and put all kinds of tox ins in things they pro duce and sell. If you sign up on their email list, you automatically get 10 percent off your first purchase. They have two big sales a year, 1 in May and the other during black Friday. You can view them on youtube too. The other non-toxic cosmetic I've tried and liked is Alima Pure. Their mineral powder will last a long time. I still have plenty in the one I ordered 2 years ago. I tried bare minerals, it irritated me, it has bismuth chloride, which is the irritant. Alima Pure does not have bismuth chloride. And looks and feels much better on the skin. You can find your match by going on their site, and they help you find your skin tone. When you order from your skin tone group in the find your match, you get several small containers of colors to try on and find your match, then you can order the bigger size in your match. When I ordered the find your match, they sent a small kabuki brush, that is soft, and I still use it. Had to space some words because it seems to not be posting otherwise. Absolutely agree! Castor oil is a game changer for hair growth and eye health.. at bedtime put it on brows, lashes and also gently rub onto eyelids too. If you try it, be patient…after 3 months I noticed a small change, now at 6 months of use, I almost have my eyebrows back and my lashes are thicker and longer…and I no longer need reading glasses except in very low light. In the same 6 months, my 80+ mother has seen vision improvement and albeit not as much hair growth as me, her eye lids are slightly less wrinkled/hooded so her eyes look much brighter. Buy organic cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil if you can get it.

It’s funny this should happen to pop up in my feed… I’m 51 and I went through surgical menopause back when I was 34. I’ve noticed some really terrible changes over these past several years, like being diagnosed with osteoarthritis (at 48), osteoporosis and aortic stenosis (at 49). Over the years I’ve noticed considerable thinning of my hair, which is great for my legs and under my arms (I shave so seldom, I love that), but now I’ve lost a lot of my eyebrows as well and recently (the past few months) I’ve noticed my eyelashes are a LOT shorter than they used to be. I don’t wear makeup often, but having little eyebrows and short eyelashes makes my eyes look so old… Yesterday my husband freaked out because I got a base coat for my mascara that cost $30! 😬 I wasn’t happy about that, either, but I hate that my eyes look so old when the rest of me doesn’t just because I have almost no eyebrows and short, stubby lashes. Worse, women my own age don’t understand because they’re just now going through menopause (early stages) and this year I’ll be 17 years post. On the inside, I have the body of a 70 year old, but on the outside I’m still only 51 and look like I’m in my 40s (except my eyes recently) and my mind, on a good day, is 16. Nothing matches up and it feels awful. 😞 So these makeup tips really made me feel a lot better about myself. I’m not alone in this having to draw in my eyebrows thing (which I do as well). I’m going to look into that stick to highlight my brow bone because that really made a huge difference and I’m going to try the castor oil to see if it helps 🤞🏻 I still like my mascara for now, but maybe I’ll take a break and try fake lashes for a bit (it’s hard to wear them with glasses) and let the castor oil do its job. Wish me luck! 😊
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry you had to go through that at such a young age. It messes with your hormones which is also what happens to older women in menopause. I wish you good luck and hope you find a solution that works for you.

I'm also sorry to hear all that you are going through. Castor oil really does help with eyelashes, eyebrows & also with hair. I also use castor oil for a natural deodorant & it works. I use 2 drops of tea tree oil with 5 drops of castor oil & maybe 2 drops of an essential oil (lavender or your fav) in the palm of one hand, rub both palms together & rub on arm pits after a shower. It will absorb in the skin & not make shirts, tops oily. Flax oil added to foods helps my knees.

I'm 72 and have a skin condition that makes my upper eyelids and brows scaly, so I can't wear any eye makeup. I've always worn nothing but a little blush and mascara. Never lipstick or shadow. Now I haven't worn any makeup at all for more than 40 years. It was never a big deal. I was a nurse for 22 years, so just did my minimal. In the OR wearing a mask, all they saw is eyes, so I wore mascaa every day. But for many years now, I just use cool water to wash my face, pat dry, then apply a very tiny bit of unscented lotion. I feel ok with this. Not out to impress anyone at the grocery store. 🙂 I do love your subtle routine.

I am a pale blonde, so I must use an eyebrow pencil (I use Elf too!) and I am careful to make sure my brows do not dip down on the ends from the arch outward a slight tilt up looks much better on older women. Wearing sunglasses, I can check to make sure of this. I do not like my brows too dark, but since I need more definition, I use a bit more than you do. I am trying to forgo eyeliner altogether and I do use eyeshadow (Pacifica) because it does not have mica. As we age looking youthful and fresh is a must. I take off all my eye makeup at night with organic coconut oil (sold in packets at Trader Joe's) and I use goat's milk (Beekman 1802) soap to wash my face. I do not wear foundation anymore but sunscreen is a must for me. Blush can be a favorite lipstick dotted lightly on my cheeks I do not use powders on my face as in the daylight it looks ghastly. Mascara without nylon fibers is the only type I will use as the fibers irritate my eyes. I have pale blonde eyelashes and cannot go without at least mascara on the upper lashes. Excellent tip I was shown for eyebrows on mature women. Don't draw the end downward too far, or it will make your eyes look droopier. I don't draw mine straight across, but more like after the arch, I just keep it a little higher up. You can experiment for yourself to see the difference. Also, don't draw the eyebrow in too close past the inner corner of your eyes. I always use the inner eye to gauge where I start drawing. You can always fill in a little afterwards once you get your general shape done. I find it makes me look softer, and less cranky if the eyebrows aren't too close together. I over plucked when I was younger, but still had a good frame of eyebrows to work with. Unfortunately when I got quite ill about 16 years ago, most the eyebrows fell out and never grew back. I will never get tattooed or any form of permanent eyebrows done. Imo most women look terrible with them. They're either too dark, too heavy, or the shape is not right for their faces. I usually draw them on free style, but for special occasions I use a stencil kit and use the Clinique eyebrow powder to fill in with. I also use a 5X mirror for makeup. It's a little too close for my liking, but at least the makeup goes where it's supposed to.
@RebeccaOver604 ай бұрын
Those are all great tips and I have started to arch up the end of my eyebrow. I agree with you also about not getting tattoos or permanent makeup because it often looks too harsh or the artist may not have a feel for what looks best on you and you get stuck with it. I tried the stencils but had difficulty finding one that matched my brows and it was difficult to see even with a magnifying mirror.

I use a powder eyeshadow in taupe, or gray/blue and line my eyes with that and then brush it towards brows as well. I am interested in lining lips I have the thinnest lips.

Thanks, so much for subscribing! I really appreciate it and your lovely comments. I hear you about the castor oil. My midwife had me use it when I was pregnant. LOL. I love how you are lining your eyes. I don't use lip liner. I think it can make lips look thinner. However, a light liner may make them look fuller.

I am an all makeup with mascara girl. I am 71 and can't live without it. Mascara has been made by new companies with natural ingredients. I use Thrive and my eye length just pops. I use darker shadow for eye liners as they are too harsh.
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
I've heard great things about Thrive and I like Primelash by Prime Prometics also. I use it on occasion but mostly go without. Great you are using dark shadow for eyeliner.

Wow, I used the same eye liner in the 70's! Then I went to the liquid one and I'd cut and thin the brush for more control. Ever think about dyeing your brows when you do your hair? I'd love to do the microblading for mine. Of course overplucked in my youth and have light hair. One thing I have learned with make up, everything gets swept upwards.
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
I've had my brows dyed a few times when I did my hair. It didn't seem to last long, though. And thinning doesn't help. I loved that Maybelline eye liner in the 70s!
@carolwisniewski67405 ай бұрын
@@RebeccaOver60 You're exactly right, it does NOT last long. The microblading is so expensive and you have to retouch every 6 months or whatever. I keep going back and forth. I have a friend in Chicago that does amazing work. But I'm not going there from Cleveland to do it. I have lopsided eyebrows, too!! I finally found a good pencil, Laura Mercier. I tried the E L F brand and I was trying to find a real taupe with no red hints. They didn't really have it. I don't have red notes in my hair. I finally found a beautiful color, Ash Blonde Laura Geller brand on Amazon. I've cut way back on mascara, but still wear it. I have a very hooded lid so I need a little lash on the upper lid. I'll be 67 this year so close to the same timelines for us! I like you because you don't talk old. I know you get what I'm saying.

Yes, we have been told numerous times ‘eyebrows frame the face’ but they actually frame your eyes. However some people prefer little or no frame. :)
@RebeccaOver606 ай бұрын
It all depends on the individual. For instance, someone who wears glasses may not have to worry about it.
@deborahbuchanan32386 ай бұрын
@@RebeccaOver60 I don’t think we have to worry about it, full-stop, Rebecca.

We've been told a lot of things over the years by 'experts'. Eyebrows are there to help keep sweat and moisture out of your eyes. That's their job. Not to frame your face or your eyes.
@deborahbuchanan32385 ай бұрын
I see a diversion into giving health advice rather than strictly beauty 😉. In reply, makeup, when combined with sweat, in hair, can be extremely unhealthy for your eyes. I guess if one chooses to apply makeup to the eyebrows, as many people do, one has to take the necessary steps to prevent health issues.

If you have thyroid issues, eyebrows will thin. Selenium is a useful mineral to support your thyroid. 3 Brazil nuts will give a day’s RDA. And speak to your doctor if you have already.
@RebeccaOver606 ай бұрын
I've been tested and it isn't my thyroid. Just getting older. LOL. I love your idea about the Brazil nuts. I love nuts and they are so good for you.

I quit using mascara when I got to the point I couldn’t see where to put it!😂. Seriously, I began losing my eyesight about 14 years ago. After many injections and surgeries, i want nothing near or on my eyes! I’m thankful to be alive, and growing old gracefully. I’m never going to be young again. I hope my beauty is deeper than what’s in a bottle.

I feel the same way about putting stuff near my eyes after wearing contacts for so long. There is definitely more to beauty than what you see on the outside. ;))

I used to have eyebrows like Brooke Shields but the 90s thin eyebrow look destroyed the inner and outer edges. Now that I am over 50 I am getting sparse patches. An eyebrow pencil is one makeup item I cannot go witout. Your videos are very interesting ❤
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm so jealous you had Brooke Shields eyebrows. I bet they were glorius. I just saw her in a new movie. Her brows are still pretty nice. Those 90s thin brows ruined a lot of us. LOL

I loved Maybelline cake eyeliner!

I know, right? Someone commented that it's still available but I haven't seen it in stores.

My mom used that Maybelline cake eyeliner, and when I started experimenting with makeup I used it to. I really liked it but can't find it now. Anyone here know where it can be found?

@@RebeccaOver60 I haven't seen cake mascara in years, but used to love it. Didnt flake, and it removed easily too. Just washed my face with usual cleanser and off it came. It was important to keep the brush clean, but as you didn't stick it back in, as with wand mascara, it was much cleaner and healthier..
@margaretr57015 ай бұрын
@@Earthy-Artist I wish I could find a cake mascara. Much healthier too, as you could wash the brush, instead of it sitting in the mascara the way it does with wands.

I think it is just a matter of preference. My mother never wore makeup when she was home. When she went out, she would put on some face powder, a little bit of rouge, and lipstick. She never bothered with mascara. She said she tried but it went all over the place. When I learned to put on makeup, I went straight for the mascara but never bothered with lipstick. Just like my mother I never wear makeup when I am home. But, when I go out I do wear light makeup which includes mascara and lipstick. I feel it brightens up my face. I am very fair skinned and look like a ghost if I don't wear makeup.
@RebeccaOver603 ай бұрын
It's definitely a preference. Some older women love full makeup. I am in the minimal camp which it sound like you are too. Whatever makes you feel good is my motto.

I just "ran across" your channel and you have a new subscriber. I've always had sparse eyebrows and used to love Maybelline ultra brow (powder) and the powder eyeliner. I think the powder creates a much more natural look, so I use an eye shadow when I can find dark brown, and an eyebrow or eyeliner brush. At over 70 I still wear hard contact lenses as I have an astigmatism, so things that don't require much pressure/aren't likely to flake are best. Pen-like eyeliner is pretty good, and castor oil is great.
@RebeccaOver605 ай бұрын
That's wonderful. I hope you can get cataract surgery at some point. It's been wonderful for me. I have trouble using pen eyeliner because it's so sharp and dark, but like you I loved the old Maybelline eyeliner.
@terirachelsims89285 ай бұрын
@@RebeccaOver60 I don't have cataracts so that wouldn't help.
