Our very own NOTEY! Thanks so much Notepad for the nod to City of God. All the best for the new year, and congrats to everyone else that won! Definitely going to give ANIMA a look

0:28 Low-Fi means "low fidelity". It's originally a music term, referring to rougher sounding, simpler, and more amateurish production. I suppose if you were to apply it to other art forms, it would mean something that was produced on a budget, or in such a way to evoke the feel of being done so. Happy new year, by the way. Here's to a better 2025.

I'm picturing a TTRPG book with stick figure art, but I doubt they actually get that lo-fi
@richmcgee434Күн бұрын
@@EvilDoresh I've actually seen games with stick-figure art in years past, although they were all labors of love cranked out on honest-to-goodness mimeograph machines and rather optimistically peddled at local cons. Some of the TWERPS stuff came pretty close to that level of art, and that was nationally distributed back in the day. Order of the Stick demonstrates that you could pull it off in the modern era with a good system and an art director who knew how to lean into the style.

@@EvilDoresh Can empathize. Might have been something in Knights of the Dinner Table at some point, but even that I'm not sure of. Marble Gate Dungeon would be another comic worthy of a setting for some dungeoncrawl system, although I wouldn't want to see it tied to WotC at this point.

I know what you mean about Rolemaster: its siren song of details and charts both scares me and excites me. Expecting a review on RM Unified now. Nice twist ending. Well done.

Yeah, Underground merits a mention. Could use a better system behind it, but the theme is arguably more relevant than ever and that Darrow artwork is eternal. Plus, as you said, Tastee Ghoul.

I gotta ask, what's up with the hate for Scandinavians? Referring to your note at 3:15 here.
@NotepadAnon13 күн бұрын
I have met many different Scandinavians throughout my life and 80% of them are awful human beings that I hate being around. The other 20% aren't actually from Scandinavia and come from other countries to Sweden.
@ChronicNOTAG13 күн бұрын
@@NotepadAnon So if I'm understanding you correctly, because of ONE country, you lump in THREE other countries, none of which particularly like Sweden very much, in with Sweden? That's rude. If you don't like Sweden, just say that. The rest of us in Scandinavia wouldn't blame you.

Still one of the most agreeable awards ceremonies. I know quite a few Riddle of Steel purists who dislike the switch over to d12, but Blade of the Iron Throne is pretty much the only successor that is actually feature-complete - and in a single book, no less. (Okay there's a sci-fi pulp expansion if you want race creation rules, psionics and ray guns, but you get the idea)

My product of the year has to be Aether Nexus. It's just the mecha hack flavored for fantasy but you can take stuff out and use them in the original game without much effort. Here's to a better year.🥂
@richmcgee434Күн бұрын
I bought so little actual new stuff this year that Aether Nexus almost wins by default, but yeah, it's really pretty good. I don't think it's quite as akin to Mecha Hack as you make it out to be, though. Where MH shows its OSR/D&D roots by sticking to "class" & level and having relatively little customization, AN is doing more of its own thing with a strong whiff of 4e D&D. No levels, an absolute mountain of customization options for a 128 page book, and all your advancements bought with AP however you want so two characters with (say) 50 AP can wind up looking enormously different from one another even with the same kin/frame "class" choice. There's some balance issues and it desperately needs more and better rules for building foes and challenging battles, but the potential's there for something great. Which is pretty much how I felt about MH before the expansion dropped, so optimistic for the future. If AN gets something on par with the Mission Manual it could really go big with the mecha crowd.
@KladbogКүн бұрын
@richmcgee434 Yeah, the book is good on its own merits and what İ said was a bit too reductive. I hope it sold well enough for a expansion to be made, it deserves it.
@richmcgee434Күн бұрын
@@Kladbog Agreed. I bought it on a whim based on the striking artwork and the strength of Mecha Hack, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise that went above and beyond expectations. The setting alone is almost worth the price of admission. So peculiar.
