This song really hits you when you’re in your 30’s. Seeing how our “friends” and real friends are after you’ve known them for 20 years. I’ve seen the worst and I have also seen the best. Cherish those young years.

I remember listening to this at 16 and I didn't really get it. Now I'm 37 I've got it for quite a while. I didn't really appreciate how fragile people's lives are and how they can change direction so quickly. Of all my friends I was all set to be the big career man in my early 20s and now I'm mediocre... I'm happy though. A couple of friends who made a lot of risky decisions (drugs, drinking, fighting, being stupid) have done REALLY well. Geniuses in college have ended up doing dead end jobs. It's all a big roulette because the situations we're in dictate our decisions we make at the time which in turn affects our future and it can spiral up or down.

I find it funny people get upset when a teenager is drinking coffee. Children, prepubescent kids, drink one pop after another. It has caffeine, too. Learn to think, folks. I notice Annie is an introvert. She's very shy on camera, and I suppose this is why she says she gets stressed out during the Q&As, especially when dad is seemingly loud. Not intending to point out a flaw, it's simply the way some people are. I'm an introvert, so I can relate. And very attentive, in many situations. I see her as very different from her dad. She seems introspective instead of a party animal type, the characteristics of her dad. I think this is why many people like her so much. There's a dynamic between the two spectrums of behavior and thought. Very good reaction. Though I don't feel the music video is as well made as others seem to view it. Probably due to my own idea of what it would be like to place images and music together; I'd have chosen a less whacky style of visuals. Still, I enjoy your own thoughts, and your daughter's. Edit: I forgot to ask you and your daughter to react to "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver" by Primus.

As a high school teacher, if you want to learn just how smart your daughter is, don't tell her anything. Just ask questions that cannot be answered with "yes" or "no." You told her everything to think and then asked her if she would listen to the song (yes) (which would make my dad happy because he likes this song). This could've been a great learning moment (why "yes"?). Otherwise, loved the father/daughter time together and love the song.

I had no idea he was from the same city I'm from, and that makes a lot of sense. I've experienced the same thing as in this song. The only kids who are now "successful" adults are kids who had relatively "healthy" families, and those were few and far between for a lot of us. As kids, we all had dreams but had no idea how poorly we were situated to actually succeed in life because of how our childhoods were. Also, at that time, the city was actually one of the "better" cities in that area with less crime, less poverty, etc. Imagine what adult lives were like for those from the other nearby cities.

It's rare that you get social realism in American pop culture in general, just because mainstream media is curated by corporate advertisers who want relentless optimism and focus on "aspirational" people. It's something built into Punk as a genre, because of the roots and history of Punk as a counter culture, anti-system movement, but of cpurse you also get gritty realism in rap and reggae and country (sometimes). But out of music of white origin, as it were, its the most consistently critical genre that's willing to dwell among poorer people's lives and experiences. And this song in particular - impressive all around.
