What do James Cameron's Aliens movie, World War II Spitfire aircraft, Italian car designers, and Russian cosmonauts have in common with the Omega "Moon Watch" Speedmaster? Rather a lot, as you’ll find out today!
In this video I share 4 watches that ended my long infatuation with owning Speedmasters. What changed? And what stole my heart away? In this video I discuss a historic but mostly forgotten Omega that helped save the world and set the foundations for both the Speedmaster and Seamaster line. I then share a Seiko movie star that has almost quadrupled in value in half the time it took for my Rolex Submariner to do so. I also take a look at the most underrated Swiss watchmaker and their illustrious history of making watches for astronauts. To wrap up the episode I share my thoughts on why the Navitimer is Breitling’s most iconic watch and one of the most important chronographs of all time. Join me for an exciting video created especially for my fellow watch enthusiasts.
*** PLEASE NOTE - There is an error in the Speedmaster specs - it is not 33mm x 10mm, but 42mm x 14.3mm, please forgive me for the typo. I was rushing and excited get this video up. Thank you! :)

TGV: I started watching your channel a couple months ago, and it seems you are having a rather inordinate amount influence on me! On Monday I got my new (very inexpensive!) Timex 38mm quartz black Navi-Harbor, which I "absolutely adore," and then today in the mail I finally got my copy of Aurelius' "Meditations." Now, I'd like to send you a book I think you'll enjoy, albeit perhaps less profound than Marcuse's tome. Do you have a mailing address you could provide? The book is a short story collection, written by my dog. It's 8 short stories and a 135 pg novella, "Impacts and Collisions," that I think you will find of particular interest, since there is a quite iconic watch from the 1950s that actually figures into the story. www.intermittentpublications.com/ Would you please be so kind as to give me a mailing address, I'll shoot a copy out to you. If you like, you can email me through the website linked above. Thanks. Kindest Regards, JG

my all time grail was the Navitimer, I got the A23322 a few months back in diamond condition full set on bracelet for a really good price. I kid you not, i can't take my eyes off of it, even after months on wrist. I find myself staring at it all day long at the office and at home and never get enough of it. To me the Navitimer is the most beautiful watch ever made.

I was watching a Breitling Chronospace in store windows for years , longing after it but never willing to part with enough money to buy it. To my utter shock, my wife bought it for me as a gift 8 years ago. While I love it more today than the day I got it, I only wished I had worn it more. I would never have an important enough event to wear it and it laid dormant in my watchbox, never seeing the light of day. TGV changed all that! Watches are made to be enjoyed not stuffed away in a box! I am wearing it much more now and even put a few small dings into it, which I actually love. They are just a way to make this watch MINE and mine only! I love the passion TGV brings to his videos! Thank you for filling my watchbox and emptying my checking account!!!!

I bought an Omega Speedmaster Professional over 25 years ago after my first trip at sea after completing my merchant navy cadetship. At the time it was an extravagant purchase but I had always wanted one and in a weird way it is probably the most sensible thing I have ever bought as it has never dated, has been utterly dependable and it has given me so much joy. Given all the years of pure joy it was a bargain. I have several nice watches (not many, I am not a collector) but the Speedmaster is the one I wear most and I could quite happily live with it as my only watch. Yes it is the ultimate watch cliché (well, maybe apart from a Rolex) but it is genuinely iconic and the price is not ridiculous. I have considered buying the calibre 321 reissue but I will not part with my old friend. I also have a Fortis B42 official cosmonaut, an extremely solid and well made under rated watch which again is not crazily expensive.

Ironically I’m wearing my 1983 Tritium Speedy tonight as I watch this. I don’t think anything will ever detract from my love for this piece....it is darn near perfect to me! 42 mm, black dial, handwinding and chronograph. Vintage to boot! Everything I want in one package.

I've been on a seiko kick the last few years. Picked up a bulls head, end of last year. Takes up my current wrist time. Great vid TGV. Keep em coming. Cheers.

The Speedy Pro was my first grail watch, and a HUGE achievement for me when I finally secured it. I finally pulled the trigger because I was getting married, turning 40, and graduating from a very long course of study, all within the span of a year. What a great way to remember those important life events! While certainly not rare, it's a special watch in its heritage, design, and place in horological history. Its place in the iconic watch discussion only serves to prove that point. As a longtime subscriber to the channel, I know you've given expansive coverage to the Speedy.... but I would always appreciate more. It really is a wonder to see how far you, and this channel, have come since the days of reviewing coffee makers. Related: Would always appreciate more film reviews, TGV!

I see the speedy more often in the wild, and it goes with more with my clothing, but that navitimer was my first “love” many years ago, and it Will surely stay Have followed you since you started, and this is my first comment. I really find your Chanel intertaining at educational . Keep it up Br

Thank you Tristano for showing this eclectic mix. Coincidentally you are the second watch critic on KZbin this week who sold their Speedy due to lack of wrist time. RE the Ripley thanks for explaining those monstrous pushers! I myself would go for the original due to its legendary 7a28 movement ... but that's big bucks these days and then there's the likely necessary service cost.

Hello from Uruguay! First I have to tell you that, thanks to the love and caring that you put in your videos y bought my first watch (Seiko SNHZ 57), and fall in love with the horology. In another subject, I think the Bulova Lunar Pilot was missing from that list, being a remarkably watch (yes, I know it's quartz), and it's one of the watches that 'walk' on the moon.

I think for some reason, when we are young we never think about the furure, even though the greater part of your life is in that, "future" when your in your 20s(say). But when that future begins to shrink, i.e. we get older, suddenly we think about it a lot more. So we migrate to(no suprise), Rolex. Value retention now begins to outweigh things like having the coolest watch in the room, or the quirky vintage piece no one else ever heard of and so on. My opinion, whats yours?

Never owned a speedy but I do have a navitimer (thanks to you haha) and do really enjoy it but I always baby it because I feel like it's a little fragile. I only wear it in certain circumstances. My favorite chronograph that I have ever owned is the Sinn 356. Now it is quite thick, but you do not notice it as most of the thickness is due to the tall domed crystal. If Sinn made a hand wind variant of the 356 they would have a absolute home run. The 356 is crazy accurate, has a workhorse movement, its tough with 100 meters of water resistance, and under 40mm so it's very nicely sized. The matte finish is also nice as it doesn't look bad scratched up like a polished piece either. Anyway great job as always, stay safe with all the craziness.

Bought the squalie1521 on mesh in that beautiful blue after watching your channel, while reading with my glasses on i started looking at my watch in more detail, noticed a lot of imperfections and scratches on it and a blemish on the dial, that drove me crazy, this was bought from a proper dealer in Italy, sorry i didnt buy the orris aquas instead, or waited for a omega, would have sent it back but they have bigger problems in northern Italy right now, gonna put Erica originals in orange on it and get it cleaned and polished buy a proper watch maker when all this corona virus stuff dies down. That blue still draws me in and its truly stunning, Stay safe in Brooklyn, Brian in Ireland

After owning several Speedys, Submariniers among several others you turned me on to the Sinn 104 with your review. I have loved it ever since. I regret every Speedy and Submariner I’ve sold and merely enjoyed all the others over the years. I’ve lusted after the Navitimer from a distance for years but just can’t pull the trigger as the Speedy always proves more alluring. I think I’ll add another Speedy to my Sinn 104, Seiko 7S26, vintage Seamaster my Dad bought overseas during Vietnam and call it complete.

Hi TGV Nice to see you setting a good example canceling your visit to the museum all though it’s probably a cool location for a video. Some other time, hopefully😊 I do understand your loosing a bit of interest in the Speedy. There’s other space watches and certainly other chronographs. But the most important legacy of the Speedy is perhaps it’s luring so many watch enthusiasts into this hobby. In that respect it’s probably still the most important space watch, maybe even one of the most important watches as such... Like the Fortis, but it’s VERY tooley. Like the Breitling, but it’s VERY busy. Like the Seiko, but it’s VERY 80’s style. So what’s left? Yup, that charming WW2 Omega is my favorite of the bunch though they’re all very cool watches😉 Stay safe and keep up the good work👍

I experienced the out of love and back in again with the Citizen NY0040. After wearing a quartz Seiko for many years, I picked up an NY0040 and fell in love with it. As I expanded my horizons into brands like Omega, I sold the Citizen as I was never wearing it anymore. There was always a nagging feeling in me though and I missed it dearly. I recently bought it back and it's in my regular rotation and I don't think it will ever leave again!

Lovely video and I can relate...! You say you love reading collecting habits? Here’s my history (and forgive me for not knowing all the references lol!) I started with an Omega Seamaster 2254, flipped for a Quartz ‘Bond’ Seamaster, flipped for a Chronometer version and kept that a while (a year...!). I then went to the Casino Royale Planet Ocean on rubber at 45mm, then flipped for the 42mm (I’ll pick up the pace now). That was flipped for an Aqua Terra, and that for a Speedy ‘Sapphire Sandwich’, then that for a Rolex Explorer 214270. I then bought a Hulk, then sold the explorer for a 114060, then bought a BB58, then sold both the hulk and the black sub just BEFORE the prices went crazy (oops lol) and now own the BB58 and a Maurice Lacroix Aikon, amongst a couple of other little ones like the Sarb and the Casioak. Hope you enjoyed that silly tale of my whimsy!

When you spoke about collecting habits - I am sure most of us made mistakes in the begining, and also had second thoughts about some watches, which resulted in sale. I've had 2 speedys, and 3 seamasters, over last 5 years, and now I have just one SM 300 proffesional. But that is the thrill of it, the journey, the experience you get out of these watches that came through your life. For example, back in the day, I was crazy about Hublot. Had 3 of them. Only one left now, and that one (38mm fusion) is there, mostly, because my wife loves wearing it on the beach, twice a year, while the rest of the time, it sits in a watch box. So, Hublot didn't make me happy, I understood it's not what I want and learned, the harder way, what a waste of money that was, but yet, when I see how my wife enjoys it on a vacation, it fullfilled it's purpose - to be loved and worn. P.S. I am pretty sure I will never own a speedy again, but still, would enjoy a re-visit.

Ironically enough, the Breitling Navitimer is a watch that I myself had fallen out of love with...and then fell back in love in recent months. I recently did a re-buy of the Navitimer Heritage which I sold a few years ago, but now with it back on the wrist, I wonder why I ever did! To paraphrase Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction”, there are Navi people and Speedy people. I just happen to be the former. Anyway, I would definitely like to see you do a full review of the Speedy all the same. It’s an icon and deserves the full TGV treatment!

Thank you for sharing this 💗. I'm VERY new to horology, as a spin off of my long interest in how ancient calendar systems and histories can be aligned. As a kid I collected outer-space themed postage stamps from around the world, so it's neat to see that there options along that line in watches. Also, I am glad you aren't ashamed of your "Ripley!". Those two movies influenced countless movies and videogames ever since. And managed a strong female 💪 lead without all the baggage that would come with these days. It's also nice to see "affordable" and practical watches here (even, dare I say it, quartz 😣🤐) in addition to the unicorns and grails.

That omega ck2292 is just diamonds. Love that blue spring and hands. I bet Rolex’s Parachrom Bleu Hairspring is jealous. I would totally agree with this review. I own a newer moon purchased as an impulse while visiting Geneva. I must say I am very disappointed with it because it failed rather soon. It was taken to my local watchmaker who put it back together in no time. Out of my Lemania C.5100 movement watches, the Tutima takes my heart due to the excellent military design. I own three different styles of the same military line. The Sinn D1 is also a great watch that I will put it next to chronograph and will never disappoint me. My go-to watch is a tropical late 70's Rolex sub. I almost forgot about my navis my favorite is the Datora in the white stainless band.

Would like very much to hear more about the Speedy's career outside space (ha, ha!), for instance which motor racing personalities drove with it, did anyone actually use the Alaska Project 'in anger'? the Ralph Plaisted expedition, any other notable celebs (I know George Clooney is an ambassador) stuff like that. I love that the Speedy has such an incredible history which I can tell people who notice it on my wrist and ask about it, but I do try to change the subject once their eyelids start to droop! Keep up the great work!

Nice watches, but my Speedy obsession has been a life-time reality, since my father gave me a Speedmaster on my 14th birthday, back in April, 1969, before the Apollo 11 mission. It is one of those rare 861 movement, Hippocamus back, red/yellow pushers editions. I've worn it for 51 years, including today. Nothing compares to it. I own other watches, but barely know why, and seldom use them. I guess I'm just married to my old Speedy. LOL.

Really enjoyed this video. Thanks to your videos and influence I actually own two of the watches on the table: The Ripley and the Navitimer (though my Navitimer is a TwinSixty, not the Cosmo. Couldn't pass up a one-year-only produced watch in great shape). I love both watches, and am shocked at how much the Ripley has jumped in price since I bought mine. But my next "grail" is actually going to be a Speedy. A specific one: Speedmaster From The Moon To Mars. The dial is most beguiling. Thank you TGV for a great video.

I don't think I'll ever fall out of love with my 1861 Speedy. Yeah, no date. Yeah, only 50M WR. Yeah, "stark" dial. But it's so damn legible. And so comfy to wear. Can be dressed up for business or dressed down. I thought I'd miss the date function but I'm even more than ever a fan of no-date watches. Best way to mark time? Speedmaster. Although I'm wearing my Orient Star Seeker GMT right now. All that to say that the Speedy is "can't miss" and... is an absolute strap monster. Of all my watches the Speedy is the chameleon. Bracelet, tan racing, perlon, NATO, you name it. It looks great.

My experience is that I wore for 15 years or so a Marchello Nettuno 3 Dive watch. Every time at business and private. Sometimes for rough tasks I changed just for the day over to a Citizen ProMaster Dive Watch (Quartz). Summer 2018 I wore for 6 months an Apple Watch Series 3 to test the Cooperation with an iPhone, but the messages killed me - and more important for me I lacked the joy of looking on a beautiful watchface familiar to me like the Nettuno all the years before. So I changed back to my Nettuno. After recently receiving a business bonus I changed to my Grailwatch* the Rolex Polar Explorer II Ref. 216570 *finally...

I enjoy three "things" of beauty in my life: my wife, Brahms and my Speedy Pro... This is the key thing for me, and my never ending Speedy love: its just so stunningly simple in its design. What it doesnt have, is what I love about it. I wear it on the black Omega "croc" strap, which highlightst the stunning monochromatic design. I own several other watches, amongst those a Stowa Marine 36 manual, and a Guinand Series 40.50.10. These two especially, are these days my beloved go-to everyday watches. As much as a like those two, I always end up with the Speedy, when my day need a "boost of beaty". The Speedy is the watch, that I will pass on to the future generation. I dont care if the value goes up or down - time itself, is worth more than any watch. Enjoy the day !

A nice video with a nice intro! I think it's only a bit sad that you didn't mentioned the bulova lunar watch, another (american) watch that went to the moon ;) . but i'm also happy to see some watches that i didn't know anything about! great work, as always!

Brilliant video. Absolutely love hearing all the watch history and story rather than just comparing specs and price. Love Fortis as a company too. Not super convinced on that dial, but in regards to it’s function it’s an impressive piece of engineering. I’m definitely going to have to own one eventually. Just like to also add that KZbin vids like these give me a much needed escape right now during so much anxiety. Thank you for that.

Dario!!! Most importantly, great to hear from you and congrats on the Bulova, such a ruddy classic. If they ever did a 38mm version I would buy it faster then a space shuttle liftoff. Enjoy it, be well, stay safe. Onwards and upwards, Best regards, TGV

The Breitling Navitimer is my holy grail. One day, I will acquire one. There are two variants; In house movement with i think has a 72 hour power reserve. And the other being powered by a Valjoux based movement with 42 hour power reserve. When the time comes it will be the one with the most power reserve.

Breitling Navitimers were the first watch I lusted after as a kid. They were in a shop window I passed on my way to school. My grandfather had a Rolex datejust, but I knew then that REAL watches were big, with multi-register dials and lots of things to push and turn:)

Love my blue Speedmaster ‘57. Different enough I’ll never see someone on the street with one, right amount of vintage charm, and all with a wonderfully modern and technically accomplished movement. Still, that FOIS is so tempting!

Great video as always. Have to admit my personal tastes have moved away from mechanical to Digital watches. I will always be in love with the process of telling the time so I will always have a mechanical watch or two. But as I grow older I tend to find myself attracted to looking back on my youth. As I was born in the 70s, grew up in the 80s & 90s I just find myself being drawn to that era inc music, film, TV and digital watches. Just my personal choice. Take care to all out there in these odd/worrying times 👍

I was curious as to whether you have taken a look at the Baume & Mercier Clifton Chronograph. It is 43 mm and also has a day/date function. I have found myself giving it wrist time and am wearing it today rather than my submariner or seamaster. I picked it up new for about $1100 and felt it was a pretty good deal for an automatic with the offered complications.
