It's kinda awesome how Steven Seagal movies eventually literally turned into Will Sasso's 90's Mad TV skits, like 10-12 years later.

The reason this movie is so extremely convoluted is Nu Image/Millenium bought the rights from Insight and re-edited the film. There's a very interesting fan theory regarding the original cut. According to this theory, Seagal's character, Jacob, was actually a serial killer of serial killers. He traveled the world, posing as a cop, killing the serial killers in the area, and using his own investigation of these killers as his cover for killing them himself. This was why the FBI was interested in investigating Jacob as a killer. In other words, the movie was about the FBI chasing Jacob, not so much about Jacob hunting the serial killers. Anyway, this theory, even though I really like it, is apparently not true. When Vern wrote Seagalogy, he said he saw the original edit of the film and had this to say: An early workprint from when it was called Higher Form of Learning presents a different version of the film. Seagal supervised this cut and although not great its a better film than it turned into. The fight scenes are edited a lot better: 1.When the bad guy is thrown from the window it's 2 shots, one from inside and one from out 2.When Seagal curbs the bad guy we see a shocked reaction from people The Earlier cut of the film is shorter but has more character moments and story. Vern mentions nothing about how Jacob was originally a serial killer of serial killers. I actually enjoy watching the film as though the fan theory is true.

Jesus Christ, this movie is pure garbage regardless the fan theory is true or not (btw I suprised this movie has fans and they have time to put theories about it). Better watch some good action thrillers not this shit ;)

So basically, they couldn't even get the oughts' Bourne Identity quick cut shaky cam editing right. This makes Taken 3's Liam Neason fence jump scene look positively cinematic.

I'm pretty sure the family scene at the end was supposed to take place years in the future after he leaves the force, but they showed zero passage of time in the film. The "secret Russian wife and kids" result is pure unintentional comedic gold.

Enjoyed the fight in the bar towards the end where they intercut shots of Seagal from the opening where he was wearing a totally different jacket. And when they spliced in shots from the hammer scene too early (before he’s even picked it up), cutting around it awkwardly so you can’t see the hammer in his hand. And the two cops who aren’t in much of a rush to stop Seagal smashing the guy’s arms, legs and ribs to pieces. In summary, it’s a sh1t show, but Seagal makes it all worthwhile.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Children of Men directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It’s so well crafted and there are some of the best one-take scenes in movie history in my opinion. If I were to teach a film making class, I’d recommend it because it is a masterclass at story, world building, tone, tension, messaging, cinematography, choreography (not dancing choreography) and editing. So why bring it up in this review? Because I’m going to have to watch it now to take my mind of this shitty movie! When I close my eyes I can still see the cocaine-driven cuts and edits…. Holy hell Redeye! This one broke my brain with the editing! I enjoy a crappy movie, but that was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.
@RedEyeReviews
@RedEyeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Oh my what a great movie! Easily in my top 10. Children of Men really is a master class. And would be a great palette cleanser for the movie I just put you through haha
@JaneSmith-so6hw
@JaneSmith-so6hw Жыл бұрын
Well said and always great to hear Children of Men getting love. I rarely skipped class or left early, but when Blockbuster had Children of Men back in 2007, I left high school early to rent the movie and was able to have a watch party with a couple friends before my parents made it home from work. The movie blew our minds and the substances helped, but were definitely not required, because it's a damn masterpiece. Not a movie I'd like to watch once a week, but it's always worth a revisit when a friend hasn't watched it before or at least once every few years.

I ve got a funny feeling that the part of Jacob was originally written with a black actor in mind. Some of his overly "cool" lines makes me think of old blacksploitation movies. Even the ending fits the genre as it tries to reassure you that the guy youve been watching is the coolest one around. It's either that or Steven's ego.

This movie suffers from what I remember as the Bourne movie fight scene disease. Rather than plan and execute any decent choreography, you just skip around with extreme closeups of people's bodies moving in a nauseating clusterfuck of sound and motion blur. Boom, scene done and not a penny wasted on fight coordination.

Congrats on 500!!! Next stop 1000 and beyond!! So much wrong with this one, my brother and I watched this one,(1) the"original" killer in the window scene,(2) his partner was definitely drunk for every scene he was in(considering he's in this movie who could blame him),(3) his "Memphis"accent,(4) the fact that there's two killers?,(5) the bar fight scene (he made the pimp eat glass or curbed him on the bar🤔),(6) when he catches Lazarus and beats the living shit out of him, he hit the guy with a hammer on all his joints,(7) Seagal''s "detective" work, (8) the FBI lady's detective work to paint Steven as the suspect,(9) the flashbacks or mention of them,kinda just thrown in there (10) much much more but I'll end it with ten, the secret family, really!!! I think this movie is when he went from shoestring budgets to a thread budgets. You only have about 30 more Seagal movies left 😂

The kerb / bar counter stomp was so out of the blue. Liked how the guy’s teeth reappeared in the next scene! Would be interesting if anyone in the know could rationally explain the ending, haven’t been able to sleep right since 2008 not knowing 😳😳😳

ONLY 30 Left! Haha, for REAL this movie is...something special. I agree on all of your points. To be fair the only credited writer IS Steven Seagal....so he definitely just did whatever he wanted to do, and no one could say anything..which isn't a great idea, because you know..we get a movie like this one haha. Thank you so much for the support :)

@@RedEyeReviews long, looong way to go yet! Jeff King went on to do Driven to Kill with Seagal which still has issues but is considerably better than Kill Switch.

I appreciate how Seagal and his partner have the same haircut. Shows their tight relationship. Also, you’re right, holy fuck this editing. If someone ever wants to know what it’s like to have a contact lost in your eye I’d show them this movie. Dear god.

Da Vinci code Steven Seagal would be pretty awesome, although maybe thats just because I watched that movie recently and it was pretty fun. I've watched kill Switch before and its just so funny when Steven talks in that Ssuuthernn vibe. The editing though is sure hard to deal with.

You see, what happened is that the Russian family at the end belongs to... Daniel? After his brother died, Jacob actually had a psychotic break, and Jacob is the cop, but he's also Danny, who is a serial killer and has a family.

Steven Seagal is a 7th degree master of Kukido. Kukido is an obscure Okinawan martial art that enables you to fight an opponent, while discreetly checking his pockets for cookie dough. KUKIDO!! Ha ha, yipppeeeeeeee!!

I know Seagal gets a lot of hate, but at the Atlanta Airport back in 2007 my cousin who was 7-8 years old at the time approached Seagal and asked for an autograph, he refused to do an autograph because he didn't want to cause a crowd, but he did say "hi and take care" to my cousin, which was more than enough to make the entire vacation great for my cousin before we even left the airport. Such a great guy for taking the few seconds to acknowledge my cousin as a fan.
