I think Ranton needs to play the game again to understand combat better, while it's 1 button smashing, there's a parry system that gives you rewards for doing so (extra damage, focus point, invincibility frame, etc). In smash stance there's a skill called counterflow that let's you parry enemies attack if you clicked heavy attack mid light combo just in time before they hit you and that is a huge game changer for me, and that counts as a rewarding gameplay design as well. Similarly in thurst stance there's also another parry system that let you backtrack and counter attack enemies while being invisible. Sure there's room to improve in weaponry but in my opinion, having a parry system should be a plus in regards to combat design, the skill tree translation into english version didnt explain it very well and it took me awhile to figure it out on my own. For the rest of your criticism i agree, keep being yourself and hopefully i think you should give a game a chances again once you know what I'm talking about.

You played for 30 hours so your opinion is set in stone at this point, but I really disagree with your takes on the combat. Your criticisms are warranted to an extent, especially on item variety I feel, the progression tree for the gourd feels a little bare in my opinion, but button mashing X is very much a personal decision and not at all the extent of the depth of the game. Button mashing X is not the main source of stagger damage, I don't think button mashing x will get much success in the game, any true mastery of the game is reliant on resource management and using focus points. Light attacks are only a way of filling the focus bar, and the game is incredibly parry heavy. I think that's where the joy of the game lies, nearly every spell or move in the game has some parry mechanic that rewards precise timing, a build could have as many as 4 or 5 parry options all on different cooldowns and resources. Even the smash stance's see through mechanics alone are engaging, I've not even delved that deep into the thrust stance's progression tree because I feel that getting back to back see throughs on smash is fun enough. There's plenty of gameplay loops outside of a set of more "traditional" combos, perfect dodging, triggering evenesance with your freeze, the invicibility frames off the transformation, you can even dodge during your light attack combo as a minigame to get the light attack combo finisher off. By then you have a focus point to do something else. The light attack spam is only a means to an end, filler for the actual cool stuff you can do once every 2 or 3 seconds. I think these gameplay decisions were pretty intelligent for a game that is so boss fight forward. It allows the player to keep up momentum and deal damage through the bosses attacks if you can use all the tools at your disposal.

these are fake news criticisms. the skill tree and equipment/items allow for vastly different playstyle that often do not include light attack at all(circle/invis/4charge 100% build for example). Light attack isn't really needed either way when you know how to hit the enemy with staff spin(which, depending on build, can build spirit meter far, far faster than light combo) So either ranton played through entire game without figuring out the builds(which is unlikely but plausible, ign reviewer didn't even find the blacksmith for gear upgrade) or he's paid to write negatives.

just like every souls game? except you charge them now? I mean, dont get me wrong, the learning curve with every stance o see through is IMMENSE (or im just bad), every single stance can keep the combo with the see through. I felt like it was a breath of fresh air, if you can time your heavy during the basic combo you get the reward of keeping the combo on (with the see through finisher) and deal a lot of dmg and stagger. But then again, im not big on Souls Games (nor very good at them) but I really enjoyed Black Myth Wukong as a whole, combat included. So yeah felt more like a 8 or 9/10 for me

Same, Chinese from South EastAsia here, grew up with 86s TV watching it every summer and HK series, Stephen Chow series... | The most disappointed and most stupid thing that I totally mad about this game is when they could have made game so much fun with all the Wukong abilities, what Wukong could do, but they totaly limited it! They could have given us at least, full combo abilities like the final boss at the end, but they stop giving up new spells and abilities very early and stick with only few spells at hand till the end of game? So fucking stupid and dumb ! Not to mention, the most annoyed things and tiresome that we can't even transform to animals to fast map running, exploring and traveling (except for one short time as the fox at chapter 3). Beside other good things, I'm so mad about this. I don't know why they didn't include that. Or maybe they are holding up for their DLCs.

This is one of the most honest, entertaining, and informative reviews on the game. But what keeps this review from being the best ever is that the part about combos is objectively misleading. Plenty of people have already discussed this but I wanted to point out specifics in this video: 13:15 This is the only time that heavy attacks are mentioned in the entire video, and what you say is that the *only* use for Y is to do a basic light -> heavy combo with a focus point, and that they're the same between stances. None of this is true. They all do different things depending on the stance. Smash stance and thrust stance allow you to "parry" enemy attacks with the follow-up, with thrust stance's follow-up being safer with less damage dealt. Pillar stance's follow-up differs in that it does a continuous attack while draining stamina. There is also no mention of the 2nd follow-up for smash and pillar stance that require a 2nd focus point. There's no mention of thrust stance's 2nd follow up that uses light attack. There's no mention of pillar stance's interaction when you have 3 focus points or thrust stance's interaction with 4 focus points, and there's no mention of thrust stance's potential for a repeating combo of ( tactical retreat -> forceful thrust -> whirling thrusts -> tactical retreat). 14:07 The only thing showed for different stances was charged heavy attacks and even those don't do the same things. Charged heavy attacks in smash stance do the most damage by far, let you move while charging, and grant damage reduction, but are close-range and have a long windup. Thrust stance has long range but does less damage and can't be charged while moving. Pillar stance also has long range and gives safety from certain attacks but has slightly less damage than thrust stance and can't be cancelled with a dodge. So the reason why the stances can't all be consolidated (14:14) is that they all do different things. Even the basic charged attacks have different requirements and advantages. You also have aerial attacks that can be chained together to safely engage on enemies and staff spinning which not only deflects projectiles, but also very quickly builds focus if you can't use sweeping gale or whirling thrusts. Could the combat be deeper? Yes. Is it nearly as simple as this video paints it to be? Absolutely not. It's only repetitive if you make it repetitive.

yeah I did like the combat, I don't like combos too much because I always forgot wtf I need to press, it's so bad that I get my self in mid of combat trying to make a combo without even considering the enemies action, I prefer straightforward movements and let your enemy reading dictate the combat, I have 600 hunts in MHRise with DB and over 1200 with Bow in MHWorld and is basically spam the same move over and over until the monster is dead and its never get bore OBS: There's only one thing I hate about the combat, the lack of precision, some large enemies are fucking annoying to hit because the lockon is positioned on a bad place or boss movements are so fucking chaotic that half of your hits are in the air.

Tbf imo the combat is more enjoyable and deeper than what you described, and i enjoyed it a lot. Likely because i like playing game in diverse ways trying to fit in every move and skill i like. I unlocked all the combo talents first and actively seeked out opportunity to parry with staff combos and to dodge attacks with invincible poke. Then maybe i switched to pillar for aoe combo for a group of grunts, and L2 to quickly build up charges or combo into a gap closer. I would say it may be a design choice, and a consequence of their design or solution to singular difficulty in action rpg such as elden ring. This game definitely is not hard, at least compared to souls game. but for people with lower skill level (no offence), dodging bosses' attack, managing mobs and staying alive can sometimes be stressful enough, especially since some real tough bosses do exist. So it was designed in a way that people can beat the game with just dodging and spamming x, but you can also be flashy though you have to actively put some effort into it.
@minmean30162 ай бұрын
Exactly, ranton saying spamming x makes me think he didn't even reach chapter 3, the spells though are quite cheesey which is understandable as this game draws in many non-action gamers, but the counters you need to lean against all 81 bosses is very enjoyable and diverse, not to mention boss like yellow loong straight up parry all your focus strike and you need to work extra hard to dodge his first attack then somehow combo parry his follow up.

Extremely Funny review. I get his main points. Strangely I gave the game a 8.5 - 9 just based on how entertaining and the imagery. It’s weird in that it’s mechanics are simple and yet has depth. It’s not open-world but the world building was still stellar. Even with all my exploration, the amount of secrets I missed out on is insane. It walks a fine line balancing challenge. Some right, some challenging and some downright infuriating. Most of The Boss designs were second to none. Some silly but still a very replayable game. Game of the Year candidate for me.

Native Chinese here. Like most people in my generation i grew up watching the 1986TV show. Before the game came out the story is actually what im most excited about and the few CGs they released showed a lot of promises. After the game released, at first i was disappointed because the story seemed too simple, lack of any twists. But after spending more time on it reading the lore, NPC conversations, and other people's findings, I've come around to it. The story actually has more depth than i initially thought, its just very scattered and delivered in a confusing way, even for the the average Chinese. Spoiler ahead. Dont read if you haven't finished the game. = = = = = For example, the prologue is a lie, or rather it's missing critical details since its told as a story by the old monk. You will know what really happened from end of chapter 5 animation and conversation from the secret boss Erlang Shen. What Lingji said at the end of chapter 2 is also a lie, if you read every lore from chapter 2 and chapter 5 animation. IMO the story is not bad, it's just too difficult to piece together without prior knowledge of JTTW and reading everything in the game.

Do you know of any films or series which seem to closely portray the original story? I watched the movie with Donnie Yen in it and it seemed like it kind of stuck to the story some but there were variations. Certain things never really added up to me but the whole context of it seemed to be that while he was definitely a magical creature made from Heaven and Earth, he seemed to have gained these unmatched powers through only Dao practices. I couldn't quite understand the concept where he can never defeat Buddha, and ultimately becomes humbled and accepted in Buddhahood, but is constantly displaying his amazing prowess via his mastery of The Way. I seemed to get some impression that it was more his following of The Way that gave him his abilities than his innate divine traits. So it's like he's this special chosen one kind of dude who basically becomes overpowered by learning a bunch of stuff from a Dao teacher, and somehow these teachings are what give him the ability to best everyone in the pantheon. So what do you make of Black Myth as it relates to Journey to the West? It seems like he's achieved some rightful deal with Buddha after being released and passing the trials, but then decided he wanted to go back to his mountain. Or went to visit and realized his brothers were dead cause monkeys had to be re-added to the list of names to be taken to the underworld. So then this is like a second rebellion of his against the Taoist pantheon where Buddha steps in again and kills him? It seems like what can end up happening is you basically beat the game and literally become Wukong reincarnated into an already-living being.
@StephenYoung13792 ай бұрын
In short: "Wukong want to free from the headband that are controlling him, so he kills himself to reincarnation into new body, Erlang has been helping him. The mission of the game is to be reborn as true and free Wukong". The story is simple, it's just scattered and hidden, feel like not complete, just in the middle of a story, they need to add more to it, for example, like fighting the whole heaven.
@Magneticitist2 ай бұрын
@@StephenYoung1379 Is that just a gimmick for some reason though? I mean I get it but is the idea that once he's freed, he'd never be able to get tricked into putting on a headband again? In the game it just materializes on his head again. Either way, the headband can just be a small representation of how he's never really "free" anyway.
@StephenYoung13792 ай бұрын
@@Magneticitist If you achieve the true ending, you will see the memories from the Destined one show as animated film when Erlang said to Wukong, "you can never be free from the headband even after you achieved buddha hood," then Wukong replied, "Open your dog eye and watch how I got rid of it", then the animated film showing us his memories in revere like they are flooding or coming back to the Destined one. Plus, after we beat Erlang, he said, "He won", which mean Wukong is right, and Erlang also believe Wukong can actually do it and be free.

Disagree on your last point about the combat being shallower than me after not getting laid in a year. The stances have different use cases and i switch between all of them during combat, after 10 hours i was still button mashing but then I started getting more methodical with everything and god damn is it satisfying to perfect dodge into "seen through" varied attack into rock solid into 4 focus smash heavy to name just one combo. @JamesHui5222 ай бұрын
Agrees with everything, except for the combat... x-x-x is the basic attack, in many games even if they have more complex combo systems you still need to use basic attacks sometimes. In this game you build your focus with that, but alternatively you can use flurry to build focus instead, and that is also the faster option. Rock-solid can be spec'd into essentially a resource-less "parry" ability with a very low cooldown, and you can basically rock-solid into heavy your way through many bosses, that is another option. Each three stances also have the light into heavy "see through" option, with different follow-up combos that no one seems bothered to use and you don't mention them, and each one have different use cases. Smash is the simple, damage-focused combo, pillar allows for a pole-dancing like move that does AOE and kicks enemies around you, followed up with two strong horizontal swings. Thrust is a safer option that has a build-in dodge in the combo, and you can followup the dodge into a powerful stab, or a flurry of light-jabs that kinda stunlocks enemies, which you can then combo out of. If you time these combos correctly you can use them as some sort of a parry as well. Again, you can mix and match these in game, the option is always there. If you don't want to learn to use them, calling the game's combat "x-x-x" is like saying there is only one class in BG3 because you can beat the whole game with just that class and you don't need anything else. I think this video while mostly objective, does not do the combat justice. So definitely take that part with a grain of salt.

When Wukong grabs your staff and slams you down and throws you? Cool as hell, but once again not you. When you were talking about games like Darksiders, Stellar Blade and God of War I was like "YEAH those games do have some cool as hell combos/aerials/grabs." I find the combat quiet enjoyable, and the statement about spamming x is quiet untrue, in fact reaching the combo finisher is the least desirable thing you wanna do as it's slow with subpar damage. Late game combat relies heavily on focus point counter strike, the resolute counterflow in staff stance, by successfully timing it, wukong can nullify the damage as well as boosting strike damage by a huge margin. And this is not a simple parry, it has to be done mid combo, which requires you to not spam light, understand light combo mid stage timing and time that with enemy attack perfectly. This timing will also be changed for some weapons useing spear attack pattern. During chapter 3 you can do a side quest to obtain the spell binder, which disables all the cheesey spells, transformation but boosting damage and critical chance significantly, making combat even more thrilling.
@wei897112 ай бұрын
I agree, somehow I feel Ranton didn't really try to learn the combat mechanic. He's disappointed because Wukong didn't turn out to be the game he wants to play or allow him to play the way he likes to play. I also completely disagree with his point on the story as well. Each chapter has its own story, but put together they do serve an overarching main story of Wukong trying to be free. But I do recognise how this can be easily missed by western audiences who are not familiar with the Journey to the West

The core way of playing still remains more or less the same despite using a well timed resolute counterflow to nullify the damage, and it's because no matter how you choose to play, the combat is locked behind a "focus point economy." You always some way or another have to either time pressing circle to dodge or mash square for light combos to build your focus points again. I've tried everything and there's maybe only 4-5 actually efficient ways to fight the bosses. I wish I could have the freedom to play how I want with some wacky style no one uses. Not get shoehorned into a narrow range of play styles.
@minmean30162 ай бұрын
@@imoutocompalex yes it's build around focus point economy, but there's many ways to gain focus and many ways to spend it. By the chapter 4 you can build focus by: perfect dodge, staff spin, counterflow see through, light combo without finisher and simply downing some pills. You can spend focus to: See through counter 2 stage combo, instant thrust heavy, tier 4 heavy, thrust stance see through-heavy-light combo and pre boost transformation qi meter.

My criticism of the review is about the critique of the combat system - just because you can play the game by just pressing X, doesn't mean you should. Try combining armors with builds and attack appropriately. Try mixing jump attacks in there for better distance control. Try getting the parries by pressing heavy as an enemy attacks you during a light combo and then profit off the effects. Is it the deepest combat system? No. But it's absolutely not as shallow as you think, Anton. Just experiment with it, you'll see what I mean.

@thedutchwolf972 ай бұрын
@@yslknowplug7022 I mean, yeah, it's definitely not as deep as you can go with God of War or something like Devil May Cry, which would've been cool. And I do agree the combat could've used more besides the basic light attack chain, charged heavies, timed parries and perfect dodges. The only thing kinda unique here is the jump attack. Light jump attack kicks the opponent and launches you back. Heavy jump attack consumes all Focus for a hard bonk. You can even do a light jump attack and immediately follow it up with a heavy whilst still in the air if you're feeling ballsy. So it definitely isn't as simple as just pressing X, especially when considering builds. Is it shallow? A bit, but not so much that it completely breaks the game IMO. But could it have used more? Absolutely, Sun Wukong is supposed to be the literal best at martial arts, at the very least equal to Erlang Shen. More would've been better in this case.
